What could have been… Babywearing Patent Fun!

You will appreciate the modern conveniences we have with carriers like the ones I have reviewed so far this month, and the ones to come.  How would you have liked to wear your baby in one of these?!?!  I can only hope that most of these never made it to production!

remeber International Babywearing Months slogan, close enough to kiss? This takes that a bit too far! Patent filed 1995 and issued 1996.

How does this one work? Do you need to tighten the belt so tight that it supports a baby? I say pass on this one... Patent filed 1994 and issued 1996.

This one actually isnt that far fetched. The shoulder is nicely spread out for comfort, as it would be in a ring sling, wrap, or pouch. The baby actually has a seat, it isnt fabric. Patent filed 1954 and issued 1955.

The oldest I found. Patent filed 1893. Not really a crazy concept, but I cant imagine sitting on a leather strap would be comfortable or supportive.

Crazy Head Carry Device. I see only bad things happening to the hair of whatever person wears this. YOUCH! Oh, and forget about babies who spit up... Patent filed 1999 and issued 2000

Seated fron carry, imagine the back strain! patent filed in 1985 and issued 1988

Am I seeing double? Realistically, how long could you use this thing? A+ for effort. Patent filed 1993 and issued 1995

Am I seeing double? Realistically, how long could you use this thing? If my son were placed in this position he would be nibbling through my shirt. It isn't nice to tease! A+ for effort. Patent filed 1993 and issued 1995

Check out this diagram! This is another seated front facing. Honestl, not a bad idea considering that fron facing puts weight and strain on the base of the spine. The issue lies in having your center of gravity pulled forward. I am also sure that Figure A. is: Awesome Mustasche apparatus.

This one isnt that bad! Looks fairly comfy. Note that the buckle resembles something seen on your overalls back in 4th grade! Patent filed in 1943 and issued 1945. Note: moms need carrier to grocery shop! Those 1940s folks knew what was up! Plus, I dont think grocery carts were invented yet!

Well, they certainly are interesting, And it is funny to see how people have been creating carriers for a long long time. The shoulder one seems like a bad idea – but Hubby carries our kids in that position all the time, so, I bet a man invented it. :)

Awesomeness, thanks for compiling these I will be sharing! I like the 1893 one!

Oh, and it was International Babywearing WEEK. But yeah, that first one is definitely too in-your-face for my taste.

Also, I learned at the 2008 International Babywearing Conference in Chicago that the Weego Twin Carrier was their best selling carrier: http://www.weego.com/en/produkte/weego_twin.php So I guess somebody’s using it. ;-) Bet those twins are the best fed twins on the planet.

@Rachel Yes these are for real. But they are patents. I have no clue how many of these ever made it to production, although Susie found the twin carry one, which she linked.

@Susie Oops, sorry! I am doing Babywearing Month and mistyped. I fixed it, thanks for pointing it out! And also thanks for the link. I suppose carrying twins starting from preemie stage would allow that carrier to be used a little while, but still not for very long. And my son would weigh 100 pounds with access like that! Or, I would have a wet spot on my shirt where he tried to eat through it, as has happened before LOL.

Haha, great finds! Some of them don’t even make sense, wth!? hahaa. it’s like someone who has never held a baby tried to make a carrier!
