The sun does a great job getting the stains out. I am amazed everytime. When I first started cloth diapering it was cold and dark outside for days, so I would wash the diapers 2-3 extra times to get stains out. This is not the way to go, not only is it time consuming and wasteful, but it doesn't work nearly as well as the sun does. Another reason to use sun is because you should not be using any harsh chemicals on the diapers in order to preserve the life of the diaper and to protect your baby's bum.
