Wool Week Finale: Video

woolweek copyThis post is part of “All About Wool Week” on Dirty Diaper Laundry.

I hope everyone has enjoyed “All About Wool Week here on Dirty Diaper Laundry.  This was an experiment for me.  Trying wool for the first time was both overwhelming and exciting.  Turns out, wool isn’t the complicated cloth diaper solution you think it is.  I’m so grateful to the many companies who sent their diapers for me to test, as well as the companies who are sponsoring giveaways.  If you haven’t already, make sure you enter the great giveaways going on for Wool Week, which are all listed on the right.

Since I like to show you the diapers on video, here is a short overview of all the diapers I have tested for this event.

Tuesday is another Cloth Diaper Carnival, and October is a month dedicated to Babywearing.  This past week was International Babywearing Week, but on DDL there is going to be a whole month full of Baby Carrier Reviews and giveaways.  There are quite a few!  Keep checking back!  Thanks for making Wool Week a great success!

Baby Beehinds Wool Cover Review

woolweek copyThis post is part of “All About Wool Week” on Dirty Diaper Laundry.

woolnappyI was given a Baby Beehinds Wool Cover to try out on my son for Wool Week.  I am a big fan of velcro wool covers since they go on so easily, and in this case the velcro looks like it is really going to hold up.  It shouldn’t matter since you only handwash wool, right?  Well, this Baby Beehinds Wool Cover is machine washable!  Wait, what?  Wool+washers= disaster right?  This cover has already been felted, which means it has been shrunk.  No further shrinkage should come from washing.  This isn’t something I would ever do, but, some people would love to have this option.  At least I know if my husband washes it that the world won’t end!

Once again, wool has proven itself to be bulletproof!  This cover never had any leaks.  I love the ribbing along the sides and the velcro closure.  One tab doesn’t have hook and loop on the outside, so if your tabs are crossing over there is no velcro on the outside of the diaper.  It has has laundry tabs, just in case you decide to be brave and toss it in the washer.

beehindBaby Beehinds have some fantastic colors especially for the US.  They have an interesting back story.  At some point they decided to discontinue their colored fitteds and Americans went crazy!  Apparently, in Australia the colored fitteds never sold.  They brought the colors back by popular demand and introduced some new ones.  Trust me, they are gorgeous in person!  I have the purple which is pictured.

If you get a chance to try one, you should!  They are a really easy way to start using wool since they velcro and can be machine washed!

*** Babybeehinds commented with this info on the cover being discontinued.

“Baby BeeHinds Colored wool is being discontinued in Australia and Europe. Natural will continue to be available in Australia and Europe, and all colors (including Deep Twilight in photo) will continue to be available in the USA and Canada. Colored bamboo O/S are also available exclusively in North America.”

  • Made from 100% wool fabric (Australian wool) with a double layer in the Wet Zone
  • Elasticized around the leg and back to provide a good ‘seal’ over the nappy
  • Bound in wool ribbing Superior High-Tech velcro means no rub marks on baby’s tummy, longer lasting grip and no curling of the tabs- to keep them looking nicer, longer
  • Fully machine washable in a lingerie bag (cold water only)

Monkey Snuggles Wool Knit Soaker Review

woolweek copy This post is part of “All About Wool Week on Dirty Diaper Laundry.”

As part of my Wool experiment I needed to try a hand knit wool soaker.  I asked Monkey Snuggles, an etsy store who makes cloth diapers, knit soakers, and knit longies, if they would like to participate.  They agreed!

This experiment was my first time with wool, period, and my first time using a hand knit wool soaker.  First of all, I am glad to have been able to try one since I am sure they are labor intensive.  Even for a soaker I know that there is time involved in making them, probably more than sewing a soaker up.

rainbowshortiesBecause wool is great and the soaker was well made we didn’t have any leaks while we used this product.  It is thicker than an interlock soaker because it is knit, but it also has stretch to it since it is ribbed.  I like to call these “butt sweaters” because if you turn it upside down it looks like a sweater!

These have a drawstring so you can tighten the waist if you need to.  Obviously this is a pull on soaker, but again, this can be a good thing if your baby is older and can stand up.

Muggabug Wool Interlock Longies Review

woolweek copyThis post is part of “All About Wool Week” on Dirty Diaper Laundry.

Janet, the woman behind muggabug, contacted me about reviewing one of her wool products.  I was thrilled to have a chance to review her longies!  I have thought for a while about wanting to try longies since I live in an area that is extremely cold during the winter.  I was sent a pair of Kelly Green (pictures don’t do the color justice) wool interlock longies.

muggAbout muggabug:

muggabug is a family business based in Maple Ridge, BC.  After the birth of their son Corbin, Janet and Jason found they needed an alternative in cloth diapering when they were not able to get rid of the rashes their son was getting. After trying a wool cover and having the rash disappear, they were hooked.  After looking at all the pros and cons of other wool covers out there, they decided to make their own, and muggabug was born.

muggabug  is a true family business. Janet does the designing and sewing, and Jason does all of the dying and cutting of material.

Because of their new found love of cloth diapers and attachment parenting, muggabug has expanded into other diapering accessories and infants clothing. There are also baby carrier accessories, wet bags, change pad and cloth wipes bags, clothing and pacifier clips. And look for their new bamboo fitted cloth diaper coming in the next few months.  muggubug can be found at www.hyenacart.com/muggabug and on facebook as muggabug.

Review:

fletcherwoolLet me first say how adorable these longies are.  I love the look of interlock wool because it is so clean and smooth.  It is also lightweight and very stretchy.  When I opened the package I was actually sad because they looked so tiny.  I was sure they wouldn’t fit.  I almost went to write Janet an email saying that somehow they measurements I sent were wrong or perhaps she sent me the wrong size.  Instead, I tried them on my son over a pocket diaper he was already wearing.  Holy Smokes they s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d like you wouldn’t believe!  I was beyond excited because now I could use them.  Wouldn’t I have felt silly if I had sent that email before trying them on him.

I tried them for the first time overnight.  We used a fitted.  Janet had lanolized them already for me and OMG, they smelled heavenly.  She sprayed some “fresh cut grass” lanolin on the wet zone also.  They were pretty easy to slide on him, even though they are stretchy and a snug fit.  My son woke up as usual at some point in the night.  Dry.  Again he woke up.  Dry.  He woke up in the morning, still Dry.  Woo hoo!

We tried them again a few nights later.  This time, I did have a small leak but it was my fault.  Janet warned me that she had quickly lanolized them for me to try right away, but I should fully do them myself.  Well, I didn’t.  We had a minor leak.  I lanolized them again myself and washed them.  Now they are again watertight!

One thing to note:  the color on these woolies is very vibrant.  You will want to wash them alone 4-5 times before trying to wash them with other wool, unless they are VERY like colors.  The color bleeds.

I am so happy muggabug sent these for me to review because I am now a longies fanatic!  I can’t wait to order more in other colors.  Fletcher is going to be the most adorable and stylin’ baby on the block!  Plus, the great thing about longies is that they function as clothing.  They aren’t just a diaper cover.  If you have ever tried getting a pair of baby jeans over a fluffy bum you know how handy longies are.

muggabug has generously offered  to sponsor a giveaway.  One lucky reader can win their choice of cover, shorts, or yoga pants.  Color samples will be on Facebook page once wool is dyed.

Sudz ‘n Dudz Wool Wash Review

sudz1

woolweek copyThis post is part of “All About Wool Week on Dirty Diaper Laundry.

One of the scariest parts of using wool is washing.  What soap is safe?  How often do I wash?  When I started researching what soap to buy I actually asked around to a few of my cloth diapering friends.  Many of them suggested Sudz ‘n Dudz. I realized that my local diaper store (by local I mean 1.5 hours away in Ithaca) carried that line.  I waited for an excuse to get to Jillian’s Drawers.

There I bought my first bottle of Sudz ‘n Duz Liquid Wool Wash.  It was sealed so I didn’t even know how heavenly it smelled until I got home!  I have to say I love my Sudz ‘n Dudz!  I have been using it to wash all of my woolies.  When I am done washing them they smell so great.  Plus, it has a small amount of lanolin in it so you are lightly lanolizing your wool each wash.  This is a way to extend the time between having to full out lanolize them.  They also make tons of other wool care products as well!

About Sudz ‘n Dudz:

Sudz ‘n Dudz began in the early months of 2005. What started out as experimental curiosity has bloomed, thanks to your enthusiasm and support, into a wonderful business adventure. Our goal is to create organic wool care products at a fair and competitive price. My daughters, Emma and Maya are my cheerleaders, order packers, bottle pumpers and sticker-putter-on-ers! They love to help with labeling and scenting the products, signing and decorating invoices, and they are always my inspiration (and sometimes my guinea pigs!) for new products. Emma is a skilled order packer now, and I think her cursive is neater than mine! My husband is a whiz at sourcing ingredient and container suppliers, as well as offering sage business advice and fixing the occasional printer jam before I have at it with a sledgehammer!

While looking into what Sudz ‘n Dudz was made from I was pleased to discover how much care goes into the ingredients and the formula.  The product is all organic and the lanolin is very high quality.  I know when I run out of my Lansinoh that I will be buying pure Lanolin from Sudz ‘n Dudz.  Here are all of the ingredients:

Organic Wool Wash Bar: saponified organic oils of olive and/or canola, palm kernel, coconut, castor, jojoba. Enriched with certified organic lanolin and scented with essential oils, fragrance oils, or nothing!
Organic Liquid Wool Wash: same as above, plus distilled spring water and liquid lanolin oil.
Organic Lanolin Balm: organic lanolin, organic jojoba oil. scented with essential oils, fragrance oils, or nothing!
Lanolin Spray: liquid lanolin oil, organic jojoba oil, silicone. scented with essential oils, fragrance oils or nothing!
Liquid lanolin: nothing but the best certified pesticide-free, detergent-free, residue-free liquid lanolin oil!
Organic lanolin: CERTIFIED organic lanolin from Australia, scented with essential oils, fragrance oils, or nothing!

Now that you know all about this wonderful company wouldn’t you love to try Sudz n Dudz for your wool?

Sudz ‘n Dudz is offering a choice between a custom scented sampler pack (you can pick up to 5 for the above products, plus the wool wash bar sample can be cut from a scented bar) and a full sized washing and lanolizing product. (Either a bar or a 4 fl. oz. liquid wool wash and a 4 oz spray, balm, lanolin, or liquid lanolin.)

How to Lanolize Your Wool. A Quick Video Guide.

How to Lanolize Your Wool. A Quick Video Guide.

woolweek copy This post is part of “All About Wool Week” on Dirty Diaper Laundry.

Lanolizing wool seems complicated but it is truly simple!  Don’t over think it!  I did tons of research before I set about lanolizing my covers for the first time.  While I always, always encourage people to do their research I think over researching can be a bad thing.  If you spend hours reading about washing and lanolizing wool it seems like a feat!  I hope the video shows you how easy it can be, although I am silly and thought I was recording portions of it but actually wasn’t!  Here is what I do:

  1. Run VERY HOT water from your tap (or boil water) and put it in a bowl.  Add a squirt of Wool Wash or baby shampoo and 1 inch of Lansinoh lanolin.
  2. Shake well until all of the lanolin has dissolved.  You can also microwave the mixture.  Works great!
  3. Fill your sink (or tub, bowl, etc) with lukewarm water.  Saturate cover(s) completely.
  4. Run a new sink full of lukewarm water if desired.
  5. Pour your lanolin/soap mixture in your sink.
  6. Immerse cover(s) in the water inside out.  Work them around a bit and let soak for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Remove from water and wring out, then either roll in a dry, clean towel or put in your washer for a spin cycle.
  8. Lay Flat to dry.

Ladies… Keep your husbands away from your Wool. You have been warned!

woolweek copy This post is part of “All About Wool Week” on Dirty Diaper Laundry.

Before I say this, let me state that my husband has been Phenomenal with cloth diapering thus far.  Though hesitant at first, he has managed to learn almost all of the crazy terms I throw around like “AIO, Pocket, Fitted, WAHM, etc.”  For some reason, he really likes the “WAHM” one and tries to throw it into conversations.

When I decided I was going to dive head first into wool he was already skeptical of how it worked.  I described it to him, saying simply that wool is water resistant and the lanolizing process helps it, and he didn’t really get it.  Fine.  He doesn’t have to.  The first morning my husband changed our son when he had a wool cover on was……. interesting.  He came into the bedroom asking directions.  Half asleep I tell him, “Just pull it off and let it dry.  Toss is over the crib rail.”  “What do I do with the diaper?”  Put it in the pail, like always.”  So he does.

He tells me a few mornings later that he is no longer changing our son in the morning if he had wool on the night before.  Fine, I will change him.  I wasn’t about to switch back since he had been completely leak free since starting using wool.

This kind of worked, but there were mornings that I begged him to change our baby so I could grab 20 minutes of extra sleep.  I think it is fair since I have to wake up umpteen million times to nurse our son, something he is exempt from.

A few weeks later I wash a load of diapers.  Routine.  This happens 3-4 times a week.  On this occasion I empty my dryer and see a very bright and familiar color: teal.  I don’t have any diapers this color that should be in the WASHER or DRYER.  I only have the one Sbish wool soaker in that gorgeous color.  My heart skips a beat.  “Please don’t be what I think it is.  Please…. no…. not the Sbish soaker in the Dryer!!!”  I hesitated to actually pull it out because until I did it was a theory.  Once I pulled it out it was reality.

shrunkMy wool soaker was washed on HOT, rinsed, and dried on low heat.  Panic set in.  It looked a good bit smaller than it did before being tortured.  I went upstairs and ran for my other Sbish soaker.  Yes, upon comparing them there was definitely a steep difference in size.  I tweeted like crazy that day about my anger and frustration.  I was worried about reviewing an item that was possibly not usable anymore since it shrunk.

Then, this tweet came.  I believe @Fentonlee sent it.  “Did the lanolin make your diapers repel?”

Ummm..  uh oh.  I didn’t even think of that.  The soaker had lanolin on it, of course.  Lanolin makes the soaker waterproof.  Diapers that are waterproof = not good.  I did the booger sucker test.  I filled it with water and squirted it onto my suedecloth lined diapers.  Beads of water danced around merrily.  I tried pushing the water drops in, since sometimes the water beads up but technically they aren’t repelling.  Rather than permeating the suedecloth the beads broke into more, tinier beads.  Ruh Roh.

FUMING, I called my husband at work to B*tch/ vent.  “Why on earth did you put a wool soaker in the pail?”  “Because, I dunno.”  The conversation turned into me crying because not only did I have a tiny soaker, I had to strip my diapers.  Stripping my diapers= 12+ trips up and down 2 flights of stairs.  It is a day long process when I am being efficient.  2 days if not.

That evening my husband brought home Pizza Hut for dinner.  Yes, I can be bought with food.  My stomach is the way to my heart.  The next day I had forgotten the entire incident and life went on.

Now, my husband doesn’t really change our son in the mornings or if he is wearing wool.  In fact, lately he hasn’t really changed him at all!

Ladies, if you have wool or are thinking of trying it keep my story in mind.  This was not the worst case scenario.  Imagine if your custom knit 100.00$ woolies were washed.  Then just change the baby yourself and save your wallet and your heart.

sbish

P.S.  The Sbish soaker does still fit!  It is slightly felted (which means it is even more waterproof) but can be finagled onto him.  They probably won’t fit for too much longer but it wasn’t the end of the world.  Here he is in them A.W. (After Washing).

CYA Wrapping Wool Cover Review

woolweek copyThis post is part of “All About Wool Week” on Dirty Diaper Laundry.

I contacted CYA (Cloth for your Angel) about Wool Week because I loved the design of her diapers, as well as the idea of a velcro closing wool cover.  Many wool covers are designed to pull on.  Depending on my son’s mood, this is something that he isn’t having!  I found CYA through Diaperpin.com and the reviews were all very good, something I look for when trying a new diaper.
About CYA Wool Covers:

cyaWool covers are great for heavy wetters and nighttime use. My wool covers are two layers of soft wool flannel or knit and are available in a great assortment of beautiful colors. My cashmere covers are the softest covers you can find! CYA Wool Wraps fit well over my fitteds as well as other brands and prefolds. Elastic in the leg gussets and back waistline are great at controlling leaks and provide a comfortable fit. *New snap closure option is now available!

CYA also offers a really fabulous service where you can send in your old wool sweaters and have them made into diapers!  I am in love with this idea!  I have one sweater in an argyle print and another cashmere sweater that I am debating about having made into diapers.  The other awesome thing about CYA, the covers come lanolized!  What a timesaver!
Little boy blue. Wearing wool #clothdiapers on Twitpic
Review:

I have been using this cover for quite some time now.  It is one of my favorites because it has a very adorable design.  It is a snug fit on him.  I worked with Erika on sizes to determine which would be best for my son.  She was EXTREMELY helpful in helping me decide between the Small and Medium.  While typically he wears a Medium in most diapers, her sizes were slightly different.  We picked a Small and it fit like a glove!

The CYA cover is very lightweight, even with it being two layers.  It is really perfect as a summer, warm weather cover for that reason.  Pair it with a fun top and you are good to go!  Because they are so stylish you won’t want to cover it up.

Because the CYA has velcro you will want to be careful when washing it.  If you are washing it with any other covers (as long as they are like colors, remember, wool colors can bleed!) just be mindful not to snag the velcro on any other covers.  It isn’t a huge pain in the butt that the diaper doesn’t have laundry tabs since you are hand washing them.

So, how did it fare?  This diaper worked so great!  I have been using it overnight with fitteds and I haven’t had any leaks.  Wool really is the perfect nighttime cover.  I appreciate that this cover has velcro closure because it makes diaper changes that much faster.

CYA is offering one lucky reader either (1) Wrapping Cover from the CYA instock store or (2) Custom covers made from your old wool sweater!

First number pulled wins the (1) Wrapping Cover, Second number pulled wins the (2) Custom Sweater to wool covers.

Sustainable Babyish Wool Interlock Soaker Review

woolweek copyThis post is part of “All About Wool Week” here at Dirty Diaper Laundry.

stretchwoolallcoversErin from Sustainable Babyish sent a beautiful teal wool soaker from her line, Sustainable Babyish for me to review.  The first thing I noticed was how brilliant and vibrant the color was.  One of the fun things about Sbish are the fun colors you can choose!  I set about lanolizing the cover right away so I could try it out.  It was the first wool cover I had ever lanolized, or tried!  I was actually pretty nervous about the whole ordeal.  You can read all about my laonilizing adventures in another post.

This soaker is a “pull on” soaker, so there are no snaps or velcro.  This poses a challenge for exceptionally wiggly babies like my son.  But, it can also be a positive.  Since my son refuses to lay down for diaper changes, once you get your fitted or prefold on, you can let the baby stand and pull the soaker on!  I’ll let you figure out how to get the fitted on!

I was pretty afraid about the results of the first night in wool.  Despite the amazing reviews of wool, I still had to see for myself.  My son woke up at some point in the night and I felt his Sbish Soaker.  It felt cool to the touch, but not wet.  We fell back asleep.  He awoke again in the morning and I felt underneath him for the oh so familiar wet spot that can happen in a pocket diaper.  The sheets were dry, and his soaker felt the slightest bit damp.  It wasn’t wet or leaking.  When I removed his soaker the diaper was pretty darn wet underneath.  Amazing!

I will also say that, though absolutely not recommended, the Sbish soaker held up during a stint in the washer.  YIKES!  You will hear all about that story later in the week!

Wool?  If you already use wool covers and you happen to tell someone who has no clue about cloth diapers, you know the reaction.  ”Wool?  Seriously?  How does that work?  Isn’t it itchy?  How do you wash it?  What if poop gets on it?”  If you haven’t used wool yet, you probably have a lot of the same questions.  Let me answer all of those.

Yes, seriously.

Wool is a breathable and natural fiber that has natural lanolin which makes it water resistant.  Because it is a natural fiber it is not “waterproof”.  When you use wool, you lanolize it even more with pure lanolin like you can buy at any drug store to treat sore nipples.  Wool goes over non waterproof diapers like prefolds, flats, and fitteds.  It is the perfect solution for super soakers, especially at night.

It can be itchy, but you should find high quality wool and it should be soft from the lanolizing process.  You can even find some with a cashmere blend or cashmere parts.

Wool only needs to be washed every 1-2 weeks unless it gets poop on it.  One of the amazing properties of wool is that it is naturally antibacterial.  When wool is left to air dry after use it will lose any urine smell it had and be ready for use again.  This is because the urine reacts with the lanolin to make a natural soap, which will clean itself! (For those of you who joke about the perfect cloth diaper being one that washes itself, this is pretty close!) When you wash wool you can buy special wool wash with a small amount of lanolin already in it.  This will allow you to go longer before needing to full on lanolize your wool.  Fill a tub with warm (not hot) water and a few squirts of your wool wash.  Swish it around, squeeze it, let site for 15-30 minutes, spin it in your washer or squeeze in a dry towel, and let dry.

If you get poop on your wool you need to wash it right away to prevent stains!

Wool is a very intimidating prospect, even for the most seasoned cloth diapering families.  It seems like it takes a huge commitment but after lanolizing your wool there is very little upkeep.  There are so many benefits of buying and using wool.

  • Wool is a natural fiber.
  • Buying wool can support WAHM’s since many wool covers are made by moms.
  • Using wool can actually save you time and money since you wash it every few weeks.
  • Wool can be super cute and work as clothing and a diaper cover.
  • By buying wool you are also supporting the families who raise sheep.  You can even look around for local farms and buy the yarn there to have it made into woolies by a WAHM!

Wool was the final frontier in my cloth diapering journey.  I am so glad I have given it a try.  It really does work amazingly for overnight.  For “All About Wool Week”  I am going to be reviewing the many types of wool out there and giving you a hands on look at how to care for your woolies.  Plus, there are lots of giveaways!
