Thirsties Diaper Cover and Duo Hemp Prefold Giveaway {10/28}

On Monday I posted my (super awesome) video and review of the Thirsties Diaper Cover and Duo Hemp Prefold.

I was put in my place.  I assumed the Duo Hemp Prefold was just another prefold, but actually, it is really great.  The open design really aids in cleaning and drying.  The hemp and cotton jersey has so far washed up incredibly soft without any pilling.

About the Thirsties Diaper Cover:

Thirsties Diaper Covers secure with durable hook and loop for a perfect and secure fit at every diaper change. The specialty waterproof fabric is extremely pliable and comfortable for your baby’s delicate skin. Leg gussets provide advanced leak-proof protection and bindings are super soft against baby skin. The x-small size features an umbilical cut out for your newborn’s comfort and all sizes offer convenient fold-over laundry tabs to protect your hook and loop closure’s from trapping lint in the wash. The generous cut of Thirsties Diaper Covers offers a superior waterproof exterior on any type of flat, prefolded, contoured, or fitted cloth diaper.

In order to achieve optimal breath-ability and hassle-free washing, Thirsties Diaper Covers are made from a single layer of polyester laminate. Want to get away with fewer diaper covers in rotation? The laminate that lines the inside of the soft polyester can be wiped clean between uses, then washed in your washer once thoroughly soiled.

Thirsties Diaper Covers provide a roomy fit and are ideal for chunky babies, over bulkier diapers, and nighttime systems.

About the Duo Hemp Prefold:

Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefolds are designed for the freer flow of air and washing water-each panel is only 2 layers thick, permitting thorough cleansing with little effort and quick drying times. Our custom hemp jersey is as soft as your favorite t-shirt and it’s knitted with love right here in the USA. Hemp is an ideal diaper fabric as it displays antimicrobial properties, is many times more durable, and is more absorbent than cotton. In fact, our hemp jersey is 25% more absorbent than a prefold of the same weight made from cotton alone! This translates into a very trim and effective cloth diaper with a hefty amount of absorbing power.

Thirsties recommends using the prefold over the baby with the Diaper Cover.  If you would rather Trifold, the Dup Hemp Prefold is best used in the Duo Wrap.

Ready to try one for yourself?  Enter the giveaway!  Thirsties will provide one lucky winner with a Diaper Cover and the Duo Hemp Prefold in Winner’s Size and Color Choice.

Thirsties Diaper Cover and Duo Hemp Prefold Review

Thirsties Diaper Cover and Duo Hemp Prefold Review

{embedded video, click through to see}

I’ve reviewed almost every item in the Thirsties line-up except the first cloth diapering item I ever tried- the Thirsties Diaper Cover.  When the company asked me to review their Duo Hemp Prefold they also asked me to review it alongside their Diaper Cover.  The two items aren’t exactly exciting, or so I thought.  The Duo Hemp Prefold is quite a bit cooler than I expected.  Designed to be open in the middle (the video explains this better than I can with words) it dries faster than it would as one solid prefold and it gets cleaner.  My review is going to be of the pair, the Sized Cover and the Duo Hemp Prefold.  These work well together, but the Prefold could also easily work well with the Thirsties Duo Wraps.

Ease of Use ✩✩✩ A prefold is always going to lose in the “ease of use” category. This prefold is designed to be folded into thirds (trifold) and laid into a cover. This is the easiest way to use a prefold, and really it turns any cover into an “All in Two” system. You could easily trifold your prefolds ahead of time so that when changing your baby you can grab one and lay it in your cover like a regular soaker. The Diaper Cover is easy to use with the prefold, and by itself would get 5 stars. The Cover closes easily with Aplix.
Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩✩ The Diaper Cover will run you 11.50, and the Duo Hemp Prefold retails for 7.00. If I were to use this system (only covers and Dup Hemp Prefolds) I would only buy the XS Sized Diaper Cover because it is fabulous and has a notch for the umbilical cord. I used these with my first baby boy. Then I would begin using the Size 1 Duo Prefolds with the Size 1 Duo Wraps, and then move to both the Size 2 Wrap and Duo Prefold. It would be more economical. However, if you just want a great night time PUL cover you could do well with a few sized Diaper Covers. Many children would only need size Small and Medium, if you don’t start out using cloth from day 1, and your baby potty learns before needing a large. Ev is wearing the Medium Cover and size 2 prefold. He is a big guy and will only be getting taller and a little bit wider if he is like his brother so I don’t anticipate needing the large. The Thirsties Medium is a little more generously sized than other brands. 7.00 for the Hemp Prefold seems like a lot but this thing is crazy absorbent, and stays soft! Their hemp jersey is knit here in the US (the only one, but hemp is still grown outside of US for legal reasons) and all of their products are sewn here as well.
Performance ✩✩✩✩✩ The Thirsties Diaper Cover has held in some runny newborn poops with the gussets around the legs on my first son when he was a newborn, and has held up overnight for my 11 month old. I’ve also tested the Duo Hemp Prefold overnight on Everett and it held up for 12 hours. I’ll admit that he isn’t the heaviest wetter in the world, but he has managed to pee out of a few diapers before.
Fit ✩✩✩✩✩ I guess you can call me a fan of Thirsties because I have always loved their newborn XS Diaper Cover and recommend it to those asking for something to use on their newborns. The Medium fits Everett now with no problems, and has room for growth. The Duo Prefold I reviewed was the size 2. If you needed the shorten the rise more than the small bit stitched to fold over you can do so by folding anywhere you need to. For me it is working well without being folded over in the Medium sized cover.
Overall: I love Thirsties covers, and have for years. It is about time I “officially” review their sized cover. The aplix does get fuzzy over time but so far I haven’t had issues with the laundry tabs coming unstuck. The Duo Prefold washes up soft and dries in less than one dryer cycle.

Trend Alert: Prints and Trainers are HOT for Cloth Diapers!

Just as Fashion Week sets the new trends for the next season of clothing and accessories, the ABC Kids Expo taking place Set 23-26 sets the newest trends in Baby Products.

With over 25 Cloth Diaper Exhibitors joining the show this year there will be lots to see.  Usually brands wait until this time of year to unveil their newest products.  Buyers will be at the show placing orders and brands want their newest releases ready for order!

This explains why the biggest brands in cloth diapers are announcing their newest products.  Already we have seen huge announcements from GroVia, bumGenius, and Swaddlebees.

The trend?  Trainers and Prints.

GroVia announced their new Trainers called MyChoice.  These are “One Size Fits Most” that have a snap down rise and have the option of two different Flex Side Panels.  The Regular Size fits 1T-3T (18-35+ lbs) and Plus fits 3T-5T (30+ lbs).  You can find the MyChoice with the Regular Flex Size Panels for 18.99.  If you want to add the Plus Size Panels for 3.99.  The panels can be purchased in multi colors but the trainers come in Vanilla and Cloud.  Available Dec 2012

GroVia also came out with 2 new colors, Cloud (grey) and Surf (teal).  Also available in October.  You can view them in the trainer chart above.

bumGenius already announced recently that they were releasing a trainer that one also be a “One Size Fits Most” Design with replaceable inserts.

Meet the Flip Trainer!

The Flip Trainer has stretchy side panels similar to the bumGenius tabs, replaceable organic cotton inserts so that your toddler can feel when they are wet, and those inserts use touch tape to be secured inside, and can be replaced when wet.  This should save a little money in the Trainer department since you are usually dealing with wet misses.  There is a snap down rise and the trainer should fit toddlers 20-50 pounds!

Rumparooz has a new line of EcoPosh diapers including their Organic Training Pant.

Kissaluvs released their new Pocket Trainer a few months ago but it is still worth mentioning.

I can’t say what is coming but I know of two major brands also releasing Trainers in the near future.

bumGenius also announced new colors and PRINTS!

Lovelace (on left) and Albert (on right)  You can preorder them from Mom’s Milk Boutique and won’t be charged until they are shipping, sometime in December.

Yesterday I also posted about the 6 new prints from Swaddlebees.  These will be available for most of their product line.  You can view them all on my post and even enter to win one of the new prints in a Bluberry Coverall!    Here is a peek:

I also have in my possession a very fashion forward print from Charlie Banana designed by Matthew Langille.  I can’t share it just yet though!  For now check out one of his other designs, these are Swatches.

Thirsties just released their new print, Hoots.

And Sweet Pea also announced an Owl themed Print.

Other recent but not “brand new* prints that have been introduced lately include BottombumpersTiny Tush, AppleCheeks, and itti bitti.

Rumparooz released their new line of EcoPosh diapers made from recycled plastic bottles.  They have a One Size fitted, Newborn Fitted, and a Wool Soaker.

Then there are more prints being announced soon by a few other brands!  *hint, one is a DDL advertiser* I can’t wait to see them all at ABC Kids!  I have a feeling I will be updating my Cloth Diaper Finder with at least 30 new products soon!

Which is your favorite new product announcement or print?

*Some links included are to DDL affiliates.  If you purchase anything through the links I will receive a small percentage, so thank you!

Thirsties Duo Fitted and Duo Wrap Review

Thirsties Duo Fitted and Duo Wrap Review

I began using Thirsties way back in 2008 when my son was born.  We used their XS covers and prefolds and they worked great.  Since then they have introduced their dual size line up.  I have already reviewed their Duo Diaper, and now I am reviewing their Duo fitted and Duo Wrap which was sent by Madison Organics.

Ease of Use ✩✩✩ Fitteds seem intimidating to many because they often seem to have a huge array of snaps, maybe because the “popular” fitted out there is snap city.  There is a snaps version of the Duo fitted but it is super simple, and since the fitted has give, it goes on like butter.  They also have a velcro version.  Same for the cover, which comes in both snaps or velcro and is simple to use.  They both use a snap down rise with 3 options.  You will likely have it sized already before it goes in the baby so it isn’t an issue.

Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩ The Duo fitted is 17 and the wraps are 12.25.  Usually you only need 4-6 covers, and around 12-26 fitteds depending on the age of your baby.  I think a whole stash of these would be a little pricey but having a few for night time would be a great idea.

Performance ✩✩✩✩✩ Can I say, LOVE?  Oh my, I love these fitteds and I didn’t expect that.  I knew they would work, but I didn’t think they would become my new favorite overnight diaper!  With no extra stuffing these hold up all night (usually 10-12 hours) and the cover keeps everything in.

Fit ✩✩✩✩ Since both the fitted and the cover and dual sized my son should have plenty of room left to grow.  They do say they begin fitting at 18 pounds but my son is 17 pounds and needs to be on the middle rise snap.  As I said in the video, the fitted looks extremely comfortable and it comforms to his tummy so well!  The cover doesn’t leave any red marks or show other signs of discomfort.

Overall- Both the fitted and the wrap are easy to use, not too bulky compared to many other combinations on the market.  The innovative way the soaker is sewn in makes for no bulk when changing the rise settings.  The fitted does take longer to dry than one dryer cycle.

Where to buy: Madison Organics

A Thirsties Duo fitted and Wrap were sent for the purposes of the review.  No other compensation was received and all opinions are 100% genuine and my own.

What’s New With Cloth Diapers? Thirsties Duo Fitted, Ragababe, and more!

Thirsties has expanded their line of “dual” sized cloth diapering products to include a Duo Fitted to replace their sized, Fab Fitted line. The Duo Fitted pairs well with their Duo Wrap Cover.  They come in either snaps or velcro and you can find them at my affiliate, Kelly’s Closet!

In Ragababe news, you will have the option of a new color, Black, in their Organic 2 Step. They are also color coordinating the inside soaker snap, which will help if you have multiple children in different sizes. Eventually they are going to coordinate those snaps with the sized inserts. Aaaaand….. a more gender neutral version of their popular tie dye print will be available! More greens/blues. It is gorgeous!  Right now Ragababe is having a hard time keeping up with demand, but if you want your own you need to stalk their facebook page for stocking times!

Speaking of prints, Softbums has released their anticipated girly print for the Omni, Miss Kitty! Find it at Abby’s Lane.

Bummis also has a new Super Lite Wrap! It is a very affordable cover at 10.00!  It comes in sizes.

Another new offering from Bummis is this pretty fabulous Newborn Bundle. Included in the pack are one dozen organic cotton prefold inserts and two perfect-fitting newborn wraps.  Fits babies 5-9 pounds, to ridge the gap from tiny newborn to one size diapers.

The Superlite and Newborn pack can also be found at my affiliate, Kelly’s Closet, and most other major diaper shops.

Newborn Cloth Diaper Review Plans

Update at the end of the post

I am the sort of person who needs to “talk it out” (my to my husband’s dismay) so I am going to write up my plans for the newborn cloth diaper reviews.  If there is something you want to see added that I am missing please let me know.  As of now I plan on comparing newborn diapers on the following:

  • Weight they begin fitting well
  • Weight they no longer fit
  • Leaks, if any
  • Bang for the Buck
  • Performance

Really, the only thing I have added is the time frame that they fit.  But, it will be nice to be able to compare these brands on those points for anyone considering them.

L to R in a circle: Baby Beehinds NB Cover, Sbish Wool, Sbish flat, KL0, Nifty Nappy Ooga Booga, Thirsties Duo, Smartipants NB, FB XS, BG XS. Lil Joey, Tiny Fit

To recap, I have the following newborn cloth diapers to review:

  • bumGenius! AIO Deluxe in XS.
  • Fuzzibunz XS
  • Tiny Fit by Tots Bots
  • Smartipants Newborn
  • Nifty Nappy newborn fitted
  • Sustainable Babyish XS Flats
  • Sustainable Babyish Wool Soaker
  • Baby Beehinds Newborn Cover
  • Lil’ Joeys
  • KL0
  • Gro Via newborn
  • Thirsties Duo Size 1

What I haven’t made up my mind on is how I will film reviews.  I do not believe I will film a review for each individual diaper.  I may group them into categories and show the different brands in one video.  Or do them all together.  What do you think?

I also plan to pit a few one size diapers head to head to see which fit a newborn first and best.  The biggest request has been for Softbums, so this will be done.  And I will choose from the others I have as well.  Most likely you will see bumGenius! 4.0, bumGenius! Elementals, Gro Via, etc.  If you  have a particular One Size you really want tested, let me know in the comments and I will see what I can do.

***UPDATE

Rather than reply to all of the comments I will update here.  I will try my best to address the issue of meconium, cord stump, washing/drying, etc. that were asked about.  Also, I have set a lot of my one size diapers to the newborn setting.  Here is a list so far:

  • Bottombumpers OS
  • Doopsy
  • Rocky Mountain OS
  • Softbums
  • Gro Via AIO
  • Gro Via AI2
  • bumGenius! 4.0
  • bumGenius! Elemental
  • Smartipants Smart Fit Cover
  • Smartipants OS
  • Fuzzibunz OS
  • Charlie Banana OS
  • Little Beetle velour fitted
  • and a Rumparooz and Sprout Change V2.0 is getting added soon.

I think that is all but there might be more.

While it will be difficult my plan is to either photograph or film the fit of these diapers on a newborn as well.  Thanks for all of your input.  I hope when all is said and done this will be a very beneficial experiment for new parents looking for newborn cloth diapers!

Cloth Diapers from around the globe!

Have you ever wondered what our cloth diapering friends across the pond (and around the globe) are putting on their babies?  Well, for starters, many countries call their cloth diapers “nappies.”  So, what are we missing out on?

Many months ago I stumbled across Tots Bots, a UK cloth nappy company with the best prints!  While some of their product line has made it stateside thanks to Bummis (I am reviewing the Easy Fit)  we don’t have their prints!

totsbots_pulcover_together__31217In Australia I found Itti Bitti Nappies.  This line has a ton of different styles to offer and I love the rainbow of colors!  They make SIO (snap in Ones) and All in Ones to name a few.

ittibitti

New Zealand seems to have a lot of cloth diaper users.  EcoBubs is a brand I learned about that has an adorable striped pattern and comes in different color combos.  This diaper is a wool pocket.  Intrigued…

ecobubs

Pikapu is another Australian brand.  Why am I including it in my list?  Because they make a charcoal and a grey version (love it!).  This is an All-in-one with absorbent layers but with microfleece against the skin.  I imagine it to be like a Bum Genius Organic AIO but with a stay dry layer.  They do resemble Thirsties quite a bit.  And their typeface and website remind me of an American Apparel ad sans the visible butt cheeks.  I have to give them props for their motto though…

Picture 21colorrange

From Singapore comes a cutesy named diaper: Moo Moo Kow. This diaper is very similar to Happy Heineys.  They have wide tabs with either a velcro or snaps version.  Their diaper is also a one size pocket.

moomoo

In Germany I found a diaper called Popolini, which makes a variety of styles including a one size.  Since they didn’t have any english on their website and my husband was unwilling to help me translate, I had a hard time navigating.  But, they exist!  What I did discover is that there is a cross over between this brand, and Mother-ease.  Which products I am not sure…

Popolini-One-Size4_medium

I also noticed a trend: Australians are pretty straight forward about what their diapers are for.  This brand of diapers is called “Krap Katchers” (get it?) and isn’t anything unique, but I had to mention it for the name.  The diaper itself is a Fleece pocket designed for overnights.

krap

Germany is BORING.  Every diaper I found was plain, white, and utilitarian.  This diaper, Storchenkinder, is a tying nappy.  I have actually wanted to try a tying diaper for a while.

german

I hope you enjoyed traveling with me and shopping for modern cloth diapers around the world.  There are many countries using cloth diapers, but in most cases they are still using traditional cotton squares.  The US, UK, New Zealand, and Australia are the leaders in variety and brands by far!

Cloth Diaper Carnival VII: Newborn Cloth Diapering

Cloth Diaper Carnival VII: Newborn Cloth Diapering

This post is part of the Cloth Diaper Carnival from Cloth Diapering Bloggers (Ning network) and Dirty Diaper Laundry.  Each participant write about the chosen topic, this month is Newborn Cloth Diapering, and links up using the MckLinky.  Please visit the other participants listed at the end of the post.

Newborn Cloth Diapering is challenging for many reasons.  If this is the first time you are cloth diapering, ever, it is even more challenging in some ways.  If you have cloth diapered an older baby but never a newborn, you have some ideas about the diapers you want to use and how to cloth diaper in general.

I was totally new to the whole thing.  Babies, cloth diapers, and cloth diapering a newborn.  I was armed with months worth of research, but had never put a cloth diaper on a real baby.  I did practice on a humiliated teddy bear, who was sporting a Bum Genius 3.0 for months before my son arrived.  Teddy also sat very still while I practiced snapping prefolds.

When I decided to cloth diaper, it became an obsession.  I would say I was a little more prepared than some moms because I scoured the internet for any information.  I joined cloth diaper message boards and picked the brains of other parents.  I read reviews of every diaper imaginable before I made purchases.  I stalked Diaperswappers for deals on used diapers I wanted to try but didn’t want to invest the full amount on, just in case it wasn’t for us.

My newborn stash ended up being

24 preemie unbleached indian prefolds.

36 Infant bleached DSQ (chinese) prefolds.

4 XS Thirsties covers.

I had many more cloth diapers, but they were one size or size small.  I went with prefolds and covers based on the feedback from other parents.  The concensus was that one size diapers didn’t fit babies until between 10-14 pounds without leaking.  And it wasn’t in my budget to buy XS AIO diapers or pockets, as cute as they were.

I spent many hours prepping the large amount of prefolds I had.  I went with the boiling method since my washer/ dryer were down 2 flights of stairs and washing them 10 times + would have killed by pregnant self.  Boiling was a mistake.  It steamed my apartment and “cleaned” years of dirt off of the walls.  Fun times.

The moment of truth arrived when we brought our new baby boy home from the hospital.  I began using my cloth diapers here and there the first days of his life.  He did have two meconium poops in cloth diapers and they didn’t stain.  We didn’t exclusively use them because the covers would rub his cord stump, which didn’t look very comfortable for him.

At the two week mark we started cloth diapering about 80% of the time.  We didn’t always use them at night because frankly I was delirious from lack of sleep, and having to put on a prefold then a cover in the middle of the night, multiple times, was hard for me and my husband.  Even though at first my hubby was hesitant about prefolds and vowed to never use them, he did, and did a great job.

We did run into an issue.  My son kept getting a red bum from the prefolds.  It didn’t look like a rash, there were no bumps, just redness.  I asked mommies on my forum and they thought it could be from having wetness against his skin.  I ran to my nearest fabric store and purchased some fleece, then cut them into contoured liners hoping this would help.  Of course, right after that he stopped having that problem.  I think his skin was just extra sensitive from being a new baby, and he grew out of it.

Some lessons I learned:

Unless you know you made tiny babies, preemie prefolds are not necessary.  I heard the infant ones were too large at first.  My son wore preemie prefolds for all of a week before I could hardly snappi them.  Had I known, I could have trifolded them and put them in the cover, but I didn’t.

I bought 36 infant prefolds and never touched at least 16 of them.  I washed pretty often at first, every 1.5-2 days.  I could have gone longer but didn’t.  I either should have waited longer to wash or bought less!

Even with 4 covers I didn’t use them all!  Don’t go overboard with the covers.  4-6 is plenty.

Cut yourself a break.  The wash routine, the snapping, the folding, everything will come about.  You have a brand new baby and the number one thing is keeping them happy and fed.  If you run out of clean diapers and you are sleepy, get your hubby to wash or grab a sposie or two that you surely own thanks to the hospital.  GASP.  I said it…

Breastfeeding was the most awesome thing because the poop was washable.  Kinda gross to think about, but Exclusive Breastfed babies have water soluble poops.  And, the poop doesn’t smell that bad either!  Just put your diaper in the wetbag, poop still in it, then wash.  You won’t have to worry about spraying or scraping poop out of your baby’s diaper until they begin solids, around 4-6 months for most babies.

And finally, don’t expect your one size diapers to fit perfectly from day one.  While I did start using my Bum Genius 3.0′s after he was a few weeks old, I had leaks until he was around 12-13 pounds.

Now that you have read my story, go read the other awesome entries about cloth diapering newborns.

Thirsties: Company Profile and Q&A with Erin Kimmet

After compiling a list of the many, many great cloth diaper companies who manufactured their products in the US and Canada, I learned so much about what a wonderful group of women (and men) run this industry.  One such company, Thirsties, really stood out to me.  Thirsties was started by Erin Kimmet with 100 dollars.  The mom of two has carefully considered the impact of manufacturing her product.  Every detail is considered when a product is made; the materials used, the carbon footprint, and the comfort for our babies.

Thirsties was extremely generous to Fluffy Christmas.  Thanks to their donations, 2 families (and then some) received a starter box of diapers!

Recently, Thirsties accomplished a feat that no other company has yet been able to achieve.  Due to the legal restrictions all hemp products must be imported into the US.  The hemp used for diapers is all knit elsewhere.  Thirsties rallied hard to find a way to get their hemp knit here in the US.  They can control the quality of the product and it is providing jobs for knitters here in the US.  This was a huge hurtle, so congratulations to Thirsties for working hard to make tht a reality!

You can try this hemp for yourself in the new (and fab) Duo Diaper. I am in the process of reviewing this diaper, so you will get a video review of it in the near future!

Thirsties employs mothers who work from their own home, making diapers, and also employees at their warehouse in downtown Canon City, Colorado.  I asked one such employee, Sonya, about her life as a Thirsties employee.

I am the Thirsties Customer Service and Warehouse Manager, as well as the Public Relations Representative. We are all in charge of different duties here, but also team up when we need to to get things done! My work day starts at 8:00 AM, and I am finished usually at 2 PM. When I come in in the morning, I open up shop, and the first thing to get done is to bring up Pandora on the computer to Deuter radio! – Lovely!!
I answer the telephone and emails, oversee the warehouse, and take incoming shipments. I input orders, change orders, take inventory, and take care of the retail customers. I am also the Return Department, and I process the returns that come in, and take care of any repairs. I clean up when needed, water the plants, and keep things orderly. I also send out the PR and return shipments. We all team up and send out the Amazon orders for the week. We have Katie who takes over for me in the afternoons, Sarah who ships the Wholesale orders, and our newest employee Monica, who helps with the bookkeeping. We are a small company, and luckily we can set our own work hours to suit our schedules. Erin is very accomodating about that! She understands about being a mom, as she is one, and it is not a problem if I need to stay at home with a sick child! We are very lucky to have Erin as our fearless leader! We all have a good time together!

erin2I was also fortunate enough to get a few questions answered by Erin Kimmett. I hope you all enjoy reading her responses as much as I did.

Me: Why is it so important for you to keep your production in the US?

Erin: 4 reasons!

1. In considering the state of the economy, it is more important than ever to support domestic industry! We are never going to get ourselves out of this ecomomic slump by purchasing goods made overseas. We need to invest in our North American farmers, raw goods processors, knitters and weavers, finishers, cutters, and sewers! Many manufacturers will finish their goods here in the USA and will label their products MADE IN USA when in fact, only the very last step of the process was produced domestically. But we believe this is misleading for the conscientious consumer. Our goal is to use all domestically manufactured fabric and components as well as hosting the final cut and sew on our land.

2. Producing goods locally reduces our transportation needs and carbon output!

3. I like the fact that I can visit our ‘factory’ any day of the week, at anytime, and I will not ever find a child laborer or anyone else for that matter who doesn’t want to be there.

4. And finally, local production also equates to good QUALITY CONTROL!

Me: Another company would have imported the hemp fabric as is, why did you fight
so hard to have the hemp knitted in the US?

Erin: See above =) In addition, the end product produced by the USA-based knitter is far superior!

Me: Describe a typical working day for a Thirsties employee.

Erin: I think Sonya covered this one =)

warehouse2Our sewers are contract workers…so they are not actual employees. But they work a very flexible schedule, as well. Many work from the convenience and comforts of their own homes. Those that work on site come and go as needed, although they all work hard when working, they are all very much appreciated, and they all LOVE what they do.

Me: When you started your company in 2004, did you ever imagine that cloth
diapers would be where they are now? And, how much have Thirsties changed
since your first run?

Erin: Wow…good question! Cloth diapers have certainly been revolutionized over the past 5 years! And the innovations and growth in the industry as a whole indicates (1) that we are all doing our job well and (2) families are craving a healthier, more affordable, and greener alternative to disposables! We still have some hurdles to jump — still ALOT of mis-information and stereotypes out there in regards to reusable diapers — but we are certainly making some great progress in bringing cloth mainstream!

Me: And, how much have Thirsties changed since your first run?

Erin: Ha! Our first run of Thirsties Diaper Covers was miniscule. We had high hopes for something we felt was a ‘hole’ in the market. We produced 1000 covers in 5 colors and it took months to sell that stock. Luckily, other cloth diapering families were intrigued, tried the covers, loved them and by the end of that first year we were producing 1000 covers a month, which was HUGE success in my book at that time. The design our our covers has been tweaked here and there — today’s covers and wraps are far superior to that first run, but over the years, Thirsties Covers have proven the most reliable and the household favorite for most families.

Me: Where do you see Thirsties and cloth diapering in 20 years?

Erin: I believe with all my heart that cloth diapering is going to catch on more and more — it just has to. Once a new mom makes that leap and gives cloth a shot, there is no turning back. Reusable diapers are just too far superior for a number of reasons when comparing to cloth. Nobody can deny the cute factor alone! Then when you add in the cost savings, the health benefits, and the environmental pulls, using cloth becomes a no-brainer.

I hope that when my kids have kids of their own, and when my grandkids have kids, they will refer to the past 30 years in history as the diaper-dark-ages! And they can brag about how their mom was a part of the diaper revolution! =)
