bumGenius 4.0 Compared to bumGenius 3.0

bumGenius 4.0 Compared to bumGenius 3.0

If you have been reading my blog for a while you probably know that I am a “fan” of bumGenius! products.  I have been using their 3.0′s since my son fit into them (around 12-14 pounds, leak free) and their Elementals (Organic AIO‘s) since I bought a few when he was a couple of months old.  I have reviewed the 3.0 (BG 3.0 Review) and Elemental (Elemental- FMA BG Organic AIO- review) already.  I won’t say I was disappointed when they announced that the 3.0 was being discontinued since I knew the next diaper (I correctly predicted would be called 4.0) would be very similar with a few improvements.  The most obvious improvement they needed to make, improving the hook and loop closure and adding snaps, were both realized.  Bonus improvements: the ability to easily replace elastic and a higher rise.

They also added new colors, which I am not a huge fan of.  I will specifically say I am not a fan of their names.  Why must color names be so confusing?  Case in point:  I ordered 2 bumGenius! 4.0′s to review, one with hook and loop and one in snaps.  I ordered 2 of the new colors: Noodle and Bubble.  I didn’t double check what the colors were.  Bubble= lavender.  Let me ask you, when you think of a bubble, do you think of purple or blue?  Water=blue.  Bubbles=blue.  Also, the color Sweet reminds me of lavender or pink.  That is pale green.  Noodle is the light yellow, which does make sense.  Noodles are yellow, or pale yellow, and this is an accurate description of that color.  I do not like that I need to research the colors, which not all stores have listed with a description or photo (and photos don’t help since the colors are so pale, they all look the same) before I buy.  My son has a purple diaper.  So what?  Wanna fight about it?

New Color Guide:

Bubble= Light Lavender

Noodle= Light Yellow

Sweet= Light Green

Update: bumGenius has re-released their beloved “Brights” colors and has released a series of prints. You can view all of the new prints by heading to my blog post about theChelsea Perry Tiny Socialite Collection, it includes action shots of them all.

    My Review

Ease of Use ✫✫✫✫✫ The 4.0 doesn’t differ from the 3.0 in this regard.  I tell anyone who asks me about a good intro cloth diaper that they should try the 3.0 (now I say 4.0).  It is affordable, durable, easy to use with the hook and loop (and snaps), simple to find the right fit, and easy to take off.  You still need to affix the laundry tabs before washing, and you need to remove the insert.  You will need to restuff the diaper before baby wears it.  Is it easy?  Yes.  Is it as easy as an AIO? No.  Is it worth the extra steps?  Pretty much.  Pockets dry faster than most AIO‘s and are generally cheaper.  I do wish the laundry tabs were closer to the actual tab, so that when I change the baby I could just pinch it closed rather than seek out the tab farther in.  I have to look for it.  Some diapers you don’t need to do this.

Bang for the Buck: ✫✫✫✫ The 4.0 is the same price as the 3.0 was: 17.95.  bumGenius! keeps their prices consistent among retailers.  It is hard to find a “sale” on them.  However, they are worth the investment.  My 3.0′s have lasted for almost 2 years.  I am hopeful that the improved hook and loop will last on the 4.0, and replaceable elastic will also contribute to their life span.  You will see that a few hundred dollars for a stash of 4.0′s will still be far less than the thousands of dollars you would have spent on disposables.

Performance ✫✫✫✫✫ I am going to say that I have had no leaks, no fit issues, nothing with the 4.0.  I was new to cloth when I started with the 3.0 and did experience leaks due to my repelling issues.  I have used these overnight with both inserts and I also had no leaks.  I do prefer fitteds overnight but I was happy to report dry sheets!

Fit ✫✫✫✫ I can at this time only speak to the fit on my toddler.  He is still on the middle rise snap (has been for a very long time) so he has growing room.  In the video you can see a comparison to the 3.0 in terms of the change in rise.  While it isn’t a massive jump I figure it will help increase the time babies can wear these.  He doesn’t get red marks from elastic.  The diapers aren’t terribly bulky with one insert.

Overall- I am very happy with the 4.0, as I was with the 3.0.  Like I said, these are really great for any parents first starting out.  They don’t have bells and whistles like some diapers, and they don’t want to.  You need to start somewhere and learn how to cloth diaper.  These are simple enough to do that.  Not everyone loves microfiber inserts because they can build up the stinkies.  Microfiber is a more affordable insert option, but if you want you can always upgrade to a hemp/cotton/bamboo/zorb insert at a later time.

Where to buy: Pretty much any cloth diaper store.  But, if you want, you can support my blog by buying yours at Kelly’s Closet.

Antsy Pants Cloth Diaper Review

Ease of Use ✰✰✰✰ The Antsy Pants pull on cloth diaper is so super simple to put on and off of your toddler.  Since my son can be particularly “antsy” some days these have been awesome to use.  I can pull them on him while he is standing or laying down.  He never did make a solid mess in them, but if he had I could have also unsnapped it to avoid having the mess be slid down his legs.  The only reason I wouldn’t give it a 5 is that to put the insert in (which we didn’t use much) you need to put in in the slot on the inside of the diaper.  You have to fold it in a way that fits and then put it in.  If you dno’t use the insert and have these more as a trainer then it is definitely a 5 star.

Bang for the Buck ✰✰✰✰ The Antsy Pants are a unique item.  They work just like pull ups but have the benefit of being reusable and way cute.  The diaper runs 25.oo unless you buy them in packs, so you can get them as low as 21.00.  I think if you are trying to potty learn or EC your toddler these are worth the price for the convenience.  I would like a non waterproof version also so I could tell if we did miss a tinkle.  But, I still love these for when we are going for potty only!

Performance ✰✰✰✰ These are perfect for what I think of them for, training They pull up and down easy, they hold a miss without an insert and more than that with the insert.  I personally wouldn’t use this as a diaper when I think he is going to be in it for a while.  I prefer it when we are using the potty.  They will still work for that just fine with the insert.

Fit ✰✰✰✰ These fit so cute on my son.  I have a red and yellow pair and they look like superman undies.  They have a bikini style and cover less of his butt than a diaper.  Might not be good if he did have a solid mess in them… and worse for a less than solid mess.  I referenced the size chart to choose his size and they fit well.

Overall- I am really happy with this diaper.  It has made potty learning easier when we know we are working on it.  You can pull some traditional cloth diapers up and down but it isn’t near as easy as this.  Plus they look so cute on him I just love it!  I wouldn’t buy a ton but I would definitely buy a few more to ease potty time on mommy and toddler.

BabyKicks Bumboo One Size Review

Like many of the diaper reviews I have posted lately, I first saw the Bumboo in Vegas at the ABC Kids Expo.  I was intrigued by the fleece leg gussets and the interesting shape and sizing of the diaper.  The Bumboo should fit babies 7-30 pounds, and BabyKicks will be working on improving the waist snaps so it can fit babies up to 40 pounds.

***FYI, this video was a PITA.  I already edited it and lost it, edited again with a less than cooperative editing software.  I am happy it is done.  If you are wondering why I am not wearing pants in the video it is because he peed on them during filming.

Ease of Use ✰✰✰ While it is true that there are only 4 snaps to use for each change, I have had some difficulty keeping them snapped while I change my son.  Mainly, it is because they are a little tight on him, but the last setting is too loose.  Sometimes one will pop open, which can be annoying.  Stuffing the diaper has also been a challenge.  The front pocket opening is quite small, and I had a hard time getting the insert to lay in the front completely flat since the front tapers to a smaller size than the waist.  The rise settings are very easy to change since they snap up or down.

Bang for the Buck ✰✰✰ At around 18 dollars it is the average retail price of a one size pocket diaper.  You do get a better insert than most since it is made from hemp, and you get the nice fleece gussets, a feature unique to the Bumboo.  It would have received a 4 star rating had the size range gone to 40 pounds.  Since there is a possibility you will need more diapers once a baby grows out of these, it had to get a 3.  I will say it has lots of luxury for the price point though.

Performance ✰✰✰✰ The diaper can hold a lot of pee, and I have changed him many times where he had a heavy diaper.  The leg gussets never leaked the pee through, which is the concern for some.  I tried the diaper overnight completely unsnapped and it leaked.  Snapped down one setting it didn’t leak, so it was a fit issue for us.

Fit ✰✰✰ As I mentioned before, the diaper fits 7-30 pounds.  At 30 pounds my son is between the unsnapped rise and snapped down one.  It feels a little too tight on the smaller setting and a little too loose on the largest.  On the waist it still fits him with one snap on each side, waist and tights.  I would like to see the sizing improved some, and it would make it a stronger contender in the one size market.

Overall- There are lots of features to like about the Bumboo, the leg gussets, the soft fleece lining, hemp joey bunz insert, colorful snaps, and the stylish look.  However, there are some kinks to be worked  out as far as fit goes, which I hope to see fixed on the next version.  it is good at holding in the leaks and I think now it would fit a small baby just fine.

Lollidoo Eco Pocket One Size Review

lollidooI first learned about Lollidoo almost a year ago.  Their diaper intrigued me and I wanted very much to review it for this site.  We spoke about a review on email, but it just so happened I would be going to ABC Kids Expo so I got to talk to them in person about their diapers.  Melissa and Alison told me about their company and brought me to tears with their commitment to creating a diaper that was made from recycled materials and could be recycled when it had no life left in it.  Even more impressive was the fact that they hired mostly single mothers, and were paying them a livable and comfortable wage. I was so impressed with the whole company and had a great time chatting them up!

It took a while to get this diaper reviewed, I was originally sent a prototype which in the end differed a bit from the final version, so I was sent that to review as well for the video.

Ease of Use ✰✰✰ The day to day putting on of this diaper isn’t too terribly complicated or difficult.  There are 4 snaps to affix for each change.  However, since fleece is bulky, it can be hard to do the snaps sometimes, especially if you have larger fingers or hands.  Stuffing the diaper is easy because the pocket opening is large, but there were times I had issues getting the insert(s) to lay flat without bunching in the front.  This was more of an insert issue…  you can use whichever insert you want.  Sizing was a little difficult at first because I had to figure out what I was doing.  Once I understood the knot and slot system the only challenge was digging through the cottons to find the elastic whenever I needed to adjust.

Bang for the Buck ✰✰✰ This is a very unique diaper, not because it is a fleece pocket, because there are others, but because of the materials used to make it and the fair wages paid to their US employees.  The price point is between 30-40 dollars without an insert at most places.  Buying a Lollidoo means you are not only preventing disposable diapers from making their way to the landfill, but also giving plastic bottles a grand and noble new purpose: catching poop.  I also know from talking with Alison and Melissa how important their employees are to them.  They make sure they earn a fair wage so they can support their families, many employees are single mothers.  And quality is very important too.

Performance ✰✰✰✰ I am going to be honest and say I had a few leaks.  It took me 3 adjustments with the elastic to get a fit that worked on my son.  One leak happened overnight, which always stinks!  I should have made sure I had the elastic adjusted correctly with no leaks before I attempted the night test.  Once I found his fit we didn’t have leaking issues anymore, including at night and naps.  Fleece is a great substitute for wool if you don’t want to lanolize or handwash.

Fit ✰✰✰ My time testing the diaper was good once I worked the kinks out.  First be aware that fleece is not trim.  While I was able to fit the diaper under certain pants, he looked pretty funny in them.  It is a good night diaper, so bulk wouldn’t matter then.  And, you could go pants free around the house to show off the cute diaper.  Waist wise, there were lots of snaps to choose from.  The rise does not go as high as I would like.  The fit that worked best for us happened to be the last slot available, meaning there are no more rise adjustments left.  I’m not sure if he will need it or not since the way diapers fit babies changes even on the same setting, but I’m sure other babies would need a higher rise.

Overall- My favorite thing about the diaper is how it is made, and the standards of the company behind it.  It is a diaper that works, and many people swear this is the only diaper they will ever use.  I prefer a trimmer fit so it automatically gets put in the “overnight” category in my house.  This is a great diaper for babies who might have allergies to suedecloth or who need a breathable diaper due to rashes.  I would also suggest never drying this diaper in the dryer, as it can get fuzzy and it won’t look as pretty.

Bella Bottoms Incredibellas One Size Review

One of the benefits of researching all of the cloth diapers made in the US and Canada was that I came across brands I was not familiar with.  Let’s face it: there are tons of diaper brands out there, big and small, and I don’t know them all!

Bella Bottoms, a brand of diapers made in Austin, TX, only recently added the Incredibellas One Size pockets diaper to their lineup.  This diaper has snap closures, a fold over and snap down rise adjustment, and pocket openings in the front and back so no unstuffing!

Ease of Use ✰✰✰✰ The Incredibellas sizing adjustment was very intuitive for me.  As shown in the video, the rise folds over on the top of the diaper, and snaps down.  Then  snaps facing the correct direction are exposed that you can use.  There are two settings of the fold over/ snap down rise, and the third setting is completely unfolded.  For every day use it is very easy to put on and take off.  There are a total of 4 snaps to affix, two on each tab.  When you are ready to take the diaper off you don’t even need to remove the insert because it agitates out in the wash.  You can stuff from the front or back of the diaper as well, the front opening is very wide and good for Daddy hands.

Bang for the Buck ✰✰✰✰✰ This diaper is a great deal!  The diaper sells for 15.00 on Bella Bottom’s website, but is currently on sale for 12.00!  This includes an insert and doubler.  This diaper has features often found on pricier diapers, such as an insert that agitates out.  The coordinating snap colors is another feature I loved on this diaper.

Performance ✰✰✰✰✰ I was very impressed by the Incredibellas.  It is obviously a WAHM made diaper when you look at it, judging my the styling and stitching.  That doesn’t mean it doesn’t perform well (or look good!).  There were no leaking issues of any kind, though apparently I was using the doubler and not the soaker.  I am unsure if I misplaced the soaker it came with or what!  I just noticed this today!  The doubler is 100% cotton and bi-folds, and the soaker is 100% cotton and trifolds.  Apparently the doubler is all I need so I bet the soaker is even better!

Fit ✰✰✰✰ The first time I used the diaper I felt there was an issue with fit around my son’s waist, as if the snaps were too far apaprt for me to get a tight enough fit.  The second time I used it there was no issue at all.  I never had a problem with that afterwards.  Most diapers have a learning curve to get a good fit and application on the baby, and even an experienced diaper tester can have trouble.  With snaps there is always that chance of having an odd fit when you are in between snaps.  These are a tinier bit farther apaprt than most so that may have been my issue. I have been reaching for this diaper a lot though, because it is really trim!  It gives my son a little less of a fluffy booty!  As for the rise adjustments, I can tell it gets very small, but with no newborn to test it on (yet!) I can’t speak to the fit.

Overall- I am very impressed with this diaper.  I had never heard of it before, but I hope after my review that you give it some consideration.  It is very well made (the label tag started fraying but the label was not made by the same folks making the diaper… so don’t fault it for that!) and you really can’t beat the price on these!

AppleCheeks Cloth Diaper Video Review

applecheekslogoApplecheeks is a brand I only heard about this year.  The premise behind the system, and the adorable look of the diapers had me intrigued so I wrote to them about doing a review.

Applecheeks has done an amazing job of thoroughly illustrating instructions for use, which you can see here. They also have a very cool video of their own, seen here.

My review is of the envelope cover and hemp inserts.

Ease of Use ✰✰✰✰ Like I said above, Applecheeks has the most user friendly guides I have seen. Even though the system isn’t hard to figure out, I imagine even a newbie to cloth diapers would have an easy time of it if they watch the video and use the illustrations. Not having to pull out inserts of attach laundry tabs makes taking them off as easy as a disposable. They will need to be stuffed, or have the insert laid inside, and they have snaps, which aren’t always easy for some people.
Bang for the Buck ✰✰ OK, the major drawback of this diaper is the price. 19.00 for a cover, and between 7-8 dollars for one insert. You can buy kits with one cover and 3 inserts, which will save you some money. To get your money’s worth, using them as an All in Two is a wise idea.  Just be warned, using it as an All in Two means you will have a potential for wet microfleece.  Airing out covers between uses is a good idea.  I don’t like using hemp against my son’s skin because it can get rough over time. If you want it as an all in two, bamboo would be a good choice. I’d like to see a cotton insert as well.
Performance ✰✰✰✰ As both a pocket diaper, and an all in two, things went swimmingly. No leaks. We used the hemp inserts, not the bamboo. We never had any wicking issues, and even overnight he was dry.  As an all in two, the insert stayed in place well, no sliding around.  It fit perfecty between the elastic, no gaps.
Fit ✰✰✰ I haven’t tested this diaper over a long enough time to say how the two size system works. Everything is subjective to your baby’s height and weight combined. The size 2 had a good fit on the legs, not very tight at all, so room to grow. The waist had plenty of snapping room left.  He technically could have been a Size 1 when we began testing this since there is an overlap, so I wonder if it would have fit him.

Overall- If you get past the price tag, you will have a really great cloth diaper.  The best feature has to be the agitating out insert.  I personally prefer using this diaper as a pocket, but I just like pockets.  I don’t need to use it as an all in two, since I have enough diapers.  If I didn’t I might feel differently.  Even though air drying your covers is always best, mine get dried in a dryer.  The serged edging on this diaper got caught on the velcro every time, and it started getting fuzzy.  This was my biggest concern with the diaper, but it didn’t affect the function in anyway.  Like I said, I would love to see an organic cotton insert, which would be good to use against baby’s skin.  The bamboo would be good for that as well.  My personal preference is to not put hemp on the baby’s skin.  I also love the tag logo on the back, I think it makes it even cuter!  And, the colors are awesome!

Tiny Tush Elite One Size Review

Tiny Tush was a brand of diapers I had heard of, but I didn’t really know much about. I was given the opportunity to review both the velcro and the snap version of the Tiny Tush Elite. Then I wondered why I hadn’t heard more about them. They worked great, and were a good price too. Some brands just get overlooked. You hear about the major players, but Tiny Tush is a brand worth researching and trying out when you consider buying a one size pocket diaper.

Charlene from Tiny Tush is a generous soul. When I emailed her about Fluffy Christmas, she sent one large box containing 12 One Size Tiny Tush Elites! Then, just a few days after receiving that box, she asked if she could send even more diapers! Soon, another large box came containing prefolds, covers, and wipes. Tons of them! She sent enough diapers to cover 3 families alone. I am so grateful to her for her generosity to Fluffy Christmas. She looks for opportunities to give back, and she was kind enough to work with me on picking the families to receive the diapers. It was a hard job because there were so many deserving families, and reading the stories was hard. It makes you appreciate your own good fortune. Now, for the review!

***note, I noticed I made a mistake in the video.  The diaper comes with one large insert, not two***

Ease of Use ✰✰✰✰ The velcro version of the Tiny Tush Elite is completely simple. To put it on you just need to affix the tabs. You will need to stuff both the snap and velcro version of this diaper. And once the baby has used it, you need to unstuff the diaper. Since the pocket opening tucks inside (called a reverse envelope opening), you might have to get your hands a little dirtier than some other pocket diaper openings. This was my only “complaint” about the diaper. Wet diapers are no problem, but if poop has traveled up near the opening it might get ugly. The design prevents the insert for ever working itself out though and having poop get into the flap opening. The snaps aren’t bad, since there are only four of them. Easy to attach and undo.
Bang for the Buck ✰✰✰✰✰ The price point is 17.95, right on the money for a good pocket diaper. You might find some for less, but they are probably made cheaper. You get one long insert, and it can be folded over for different rise settings. Quality made.
Performance ✰✰✰✰✰ There were no problems in this department. The diapers worked great overnights, day time, naps. I only used the large insert, I didn’t double stuff or add any of my other inserts. Recently my son wore the snao veriosn of the Tiny Tush Elite overnight. At 5:00 am there is a bomb threat at our home, my son and husband evacuated (I was staying at a friend’s watching her baby since she was in the hospital having another one!) and after they got home he went right back to sleep. He was in the diaper all night until after 9. Much longer than usual. It was very heavy, but it never leaked!
Fit ✰✰✰✰ I can’t say how the Tiny Tush fits on a newborn, or a larger baby. My son fits the two middle snap rise settings, either one work for him. On my “newborn” baby monkey, there was some leg gaping. This could be a drawback of having such a high rise, you need larger legs for the bigger babies. Once the thighs chunk up a little it should fit a smaller baby fine.
Overall- Like I said in the video, I love that this diaper has microfleece instead of suedecloth, and you can get snaps or velcro. There are nice color choices, the diaper is made well, and it looks comfortable on my son. Even though it is slightly bulkier than a Bum Genius 3.0, it isn’t the bulkiest pocket diaper I have seen, and is trimmer than a prefold/ cover combo or certain fitted/ cover combinations. I think this is a pocket diaper worth looking at!

BabyKicks Organic One Size Fitted Video Review

I first saw this diaper a couple of months ago.  I wasn’t sold on it because of the crazy colored snaps, it makes it look more complicated than it is (to me.)  I did know of the amazing reputation of BabyKicks for their super absorbent inserts and prefolds.  I got the diaper in the mail and after prepping ( a lot, remember, this is hemp.  A ten wash minimum before this puppy is ready for action.) and putting it on my son, I was in love with the fit.  And, in the morning, when there was no leak, I loved it more.  It is a great fitted for going coverless as well, if you are into that sort of thing.

About BabyKicks, the company:

BabyKicks has been designing and manufacturing superior hemp diapering products in the USA since October 2000.  BabyKicks strongly believes in social responsibilities. As a result BabyKicks has started to move some of its production (particularly the cutting and sewing) to be done by local disabled workshops and we could not be happier with the quality and commitment.

What BabyKicks say about their diaper.

This fitted does it all and when we dreamed it up we had your baby’s comfort in mind. Our premier organic fitted is designed to be the only diaper needed from birth thru potty training. Made of luxurious 50% certified organic cotton for softness, 33% natural hemp for absorbency and durability, and 17%% polyester for stretch, this diaper will wrap around baby hugging every curve and keeping messes in. The diaper even comes with a free Joey-Bunz insert and the features include:

Great Fit: This diaper will give you the flexibility you desire and your baby an amazing comfort and feel with its trim-fitting design – no bulkiness here – while providing a wonderful fit!

Side-Snapping Snaps: Side snaps make changing a breeze and eliminate wing droop. Fold the diaper inside the pocket for a trim fit on a newborn, or leave the waist snaps slightly loose for easy up and down on a potty training toddler (you can use this fitted as a training pant).

Front Pocket: The unique front stuffing pocket allows for easy access and virtually eliminates insert shift. The pocket feature on this fitted gives you all the flexibility in the world to add as much (or as little) absorbency as your child needs – be it during the day with an added Joey-Bunz Insert or maybe at night with one of our ultra-absorbent Pre-Folds.

One-Size Design: Our one size design grows with baby and this truly is the only diaper you will need! There is no need to figure out what size is right for your baby or worrying about your baby outgrowing the diapers you just bought. Our BabyKicks Organic Fitted fits newborns (7lbs/3.2 kg) to toddlers (40lbs/18kg) comfortably and securely. The color coded snap-sizing system makes adjusting and finding the right size and fit super-easy.

Ease of Use ✰✰✰✰ The diaper looks, um, imtimidating even to me. Something about the colored snaps makes it look harder. The reality isn’t bad at all. You only have to affix 4 snaps per diaper change. You won’t be needing to change the rise for each change, of course. And, if you are using it as a pull-up, which I haven’t tried since my son isn’t able to stand on his own, it is probably easier (or maybe harder depending on the child.) If you are shown how to size this diaper in person, as I was, to the preemie size, that is also easy, but possibly hard to explain in text. But of course, that is why I am here!
Bang for the Buck ✰✰✰ Hemp is a very expensive fabric because of the legal issues. It always has to be imported. The diaper costs 19.95. That is pretty pricey for a fitted. You can buy a pocket diaper that is waterproof and one size for less money. But, night time diapers, or diapers absorbent enough for night time, are usually pricier also. You are able to use this from 7 lbs (or less if you go with the unsnapped fold over technique), up to a 40 pounds toddler.
Performance ✰✰✰✰✰ With the hemp, cotton, and polyester (for stretch, makes a sung fit) combo, this diaper is a beast. I love it. It fits like a glove on my son, which means no leaks. And, it is super absorbent.
Fit ✰✰✰✰✰ Perfect, can’t complain a bit, and don’t see any issues with it fitting in the future. Adding stretch makes all the difference.

Overall:  This diaper is really great!  It does have a hefty price tag for a fitted, but the performance and fit make it well worth it.  It is better to invest in quality than quantity when it comes to diapers capable to working overnight.
