Trend Alert: Prints and Trainers are HOT for Cloth Diapers!

Just as Fashion Week sets the new trends for the next season of clothing and accessories, the ABC Kids Expo taking place Set 23-26 sets the newest trends in Baby Products.

With over 25 Cloth Diaper Exhibitors joining the show this year there will be lots to see.  Usually brands wait until this time of year to unveil their newest products.  Buyers will be at the show placing orders and brands want their newest releases ready for order!

This explains why the biggest brands in cloth diapers are announcing their newest products.  Already we have seen huge announcements from GroVia, bumGenius, and Swaddlebees.

The trend?  Trainers and Prints.

GroVia announced their new Trainers called MyChoice.  These are “One Size Fits Most” that have a snap down rise and have the option of two different Flex Side Panels.  The Regular Size fits 1T-3T (18-35+ lbs) and Plus fits 3T-5T (30+ lbs).  You can find the MyChoice with the Regular Flex Size Panels for 18.99.  If you want to add the Plus Size Panels for 3.99.  The panels can be purchased in multi colors but the trainers come in Vanilla and Cloud.  Available Dec 2012

GroVia also came out with 2 new colors, Cloud (grey) and Surf (teal).  Also available in October.  You can view them in the trainer chart above.

bumGenius already announced recently that they were releasing a trainer that one also be a “One Size Fits Most” Design with replaceable inserts.

Meet the Flip Trainer!

The Flip Trainer has stretchy side panels similar to the bumGenius tabs, replaceable organic cotton inserts so that your toddler can feel when they are wet, and those inserts use touch tape to be secured inside, and can be replaced when wet.  This should save a little money in the Trainer department since you are usually dealing with wet misses.  There is a snap down rise and the trainer should fit toddlers 20-50 pounds!

Rumparooz has a new line of EcoPosh diapers including their Organic Training Pant.

Kissaluvs released their new Pocket Trainer a few months ago but it is still worth mentioning.

I can’t say what is coming but I know of two major brands also releasing Trainers in the near future.

bumGenius also announced new colors and PRINTS!

Lovelace (on left) and Albert (on right)  You can preorder them from Mom’s Milk Boutique and won’t be charged until they are shipping, sometime in December.

Yesterday I also posted about the 6 new prints from Swaddlebees.  These will be available for most of their product line.  You can view them all on my post and even enter to win one of the new prints in a Bluberry Coverall!    Here is a peek:

I also have in my possession a very fashion forward print from Charlie Banana designed by Matthew Langille.  I can’t share it just yet though!  For now check out one of his other designs, these are Swatches.

Thirsties just released their new print, Hoots.

And Sweet Pea also announced an Owl themed Print.

Other recent but not “brand new* prints that have been introduced lately include BottombumpersTiny Tush, AppleCheeks, and itti bitti.

Rumparooz released their new line of EcoPosh diapers made from recycled plastic bottles.  They have a One Size fitted, Newborn Fitted, and a Wool Soaker.

Then there are more prints being announced soon by a few other brands!  *hint, one is a DDL advertiser* I can’t wait to see them all at ABC Kids!  I have a feeling I will be updating my Cloth Diaper Finder with at least 30 new products soon!

Which is your favorite new product announcement or print?

*Some links included are to DDL affiliates.  If you purchase anything through the links I will receive a small percentage, so thank you!

Kissaluvs Hybrid Contour Review

Kissaluvs Hybrid Contour Review

Ease of Use ✩✩✩✩ I am finding a lot of love for contours. I don’t mind using a Snappi at all and it is easier in many ways than using snaps.  Like you can see in the video, it isn’t very time consuming to put over the baby and then snappi on.  Keep in mind that I still need to add a cover though, unlike an AIO or Pocket diaper.
Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩ This particular contour isn’t saving a huge amount over buying a Fitted, and the whole point of a contour (to me) is to save money!  It retails for about 10.95.
Performance ✩✩✩✩ The diaper is definitely absorbent enough for us for overnights and we have used it quite a bit. The fact thatthe insert is microfiber cuts down on bulk versus using all cotton fleece but it can get the stinkies since it is what we use overnight more than the daytime. Thos are the Pros and Cons of Microfiber I suppose.
Fit ✩✩✩ This diaper isn’t going to last us much longer. To be fair, Ev is very chunky, but even the rise is not as long as I would like. The leg elastic only comes up so far, so when you have larger legs the fit is just off. It still “fits” but I don’t like the way it works on him.
Overall: If there was a bit more room and the diaper were a bit cheaper I would like it more. There are contours I prefer to this one but I like how the fleece gives it a textured feel, and I love the sweet Kissaluvs colors it comes in.

I purchased this diaper using my Diaper Junction affiliate money (so remember to shop my affiliates, that equals more diapers for me to review!).  I will be donating this diaper to Giving Diapers, Giving Hope in the next shipment!

Intro to Cloth Diapers: What is a Tongue Style All-in-One?

Intro to Cloth Diapers: What is a Tongue Style All-in-One?

In this installment of my ongoing series: Introduction to Cloth Diapers, I tackle the “Tongue-Style All-in-One.” This might be another term you are unfamiliar with since it doesn’t represent a large number of diapers.

A “Tongue-Style All-in-One” is a cloth diaper that is not quite a pocket, not quite an All-in-One, but has the attributes of both.  There is an “insert” that stays attached, making it a one piece diaper, but it agitates loose in the wash which makes for a cleaner diaper and quicker drying time.

Hopefully the video above explains this better than words can.

I was considering making “flapping” tongue all-in-ones (ex. Gro Via AIO) a part of this category but they will get their own.

The two diapers that exemplify the Tongue Style All-in-One are the Kissaluvs Marvel AIO and Tots Bots (Bummis) Easy Fit.

Both diapers have long inserts that are attached to the diaper but are also stuffed into a pocket.

Like a pocket (what is a pocket?), the insert will be outside of the diaper during washing, however it remains attached.  This means you won’t be searching for the matching insert in your laundry basket.

Like a pocket, you will have to re-stuff the insert inside but this takes very minimal effort and time on your part compared to a pocket.

Unlike a pocket diaper (but like a Sleeve Diaper) you don’t need to remove the insert before washing the diaper since it agitates out in the washer.

Both of these diapers I have mentioned are pricier than most pocket diapers.  The Kissaluvs Marvel AIO is 22.95 and the Tots Bots Easy Fit is 23.95.  Both can be found at my affiliate, Kelly’s Closet.

If you have missed any installments of my Introduction to Cloth Diapers Series you can still catch up: Intro to Cloth Diapers.

One Size Cloth Diapers on a Newborn Review Video and Chart

I am concluding my newborn cloth diaper reviews today with this video of many of the one size diapers I used on my baby Everett.  Some of the diapers shown in the video aren’t in the chart, but the most requested diapers made it to the chart.  If anyone has any questions please ask in the comments and I will answer.  I like to remind everyone that every baby is different. My first son didn’t fit his BG 3.0 until over 10 pounds, but this guy fit at 9.5 pounds.

I have reviewed each of these diapers in more detail, though at the time I had not used them on an newborn.  To see each diaper’s individual review you can click the links.

Softbums Echo and Softbums Omni

bumGenius! 4.0

bumGenius! Elemental

Fuzzibunz OS

Kissaluvs Marvel OS Cover

Little Beetle Little to Big

Babykicks 3g

Rocky Mountain OS

Sweet Pea OS Cover

Sprout Change V 2.0

Happy Heinys Improved OS (no video yet)

One again, this chart is a guide, not a definite size chart.  EVERY BABY IS DIFFERENT and what fit my son well might not fit your baby, or vice versa.

Newborn Cloth Diaper Review Plans

Update at the end of the post

I am the sort of person who needs to “talk it out” (my to my husband’s dismay) so I am going to write up my plans for the newborn cloth diaper reviews.  If there is something you want to see added that I am missing please let me know.  As of now I plan on comparing newborn diapers on the following:

  • Weight they begin fitting well
  • Weight they no longer fit
  • Leaks, if any
  • Bang for the Buck
  • Performance

Really, the only thing I have added is the time frame that they fit.  But, it will be nice to be able to compare these brands on those points for anyone considering them.

L to R in a circle: Baby Beehinds NB Cover, Sbish Wool, Sbish flat, KL0, Nifty Nappy Ooga Booga, Thirsties Duo, Smartipants NB, FB XS, BG XS. Lil Joey, Tiny Fit

To recap, I have the following newborn cloth diapers to review:

  • bumGenius! AIO Deluxe in XS.
  • Fuzzibunz XS
  • Tiny Fit by Tots Bots
  • Smartipants Newborn
  • Nifty Nappy newborn fitted
  • Sustainable Babyish XS Flats
  • Sustainable Babyish Wool Soaker
  • Baby Beehinds Newborn Cover
  • Lil’ Joeys
  • KL0
  • Gro Via newborn
  • Thirsties Duo Size 1

What I haven’t made up my mind on is how I will film reviews.  I do not believe I will film a review for each individual diaper.  I may group them into categories and show the different brands in one video.  Or do them all together.  What do you think?

I also plan to pit a few one size diapers head to head to see which fit a newborn first and best.  The biggest request has been for Softbums, so this will be done.  And I will choose from the others I have as well.  Most likely you will see bumGenius! 4.0, bumGenius! Elementals, Gro Via, etc.  If you  have a particular One Size you really want tested, let me know in the comments and I will see what I can do.

***UPDATE

Rather than reply to all of the comments I will update here.  I will try my best to address the issue of meconium, cord stump, washing/drying, etc. that were asked about.  Also, I have set a lot of my one size diapers to the newborn setting.  Here is a list so far:

  • Bottombumpers OS
  • Doopsy
  • Rocky Mountain OS
  • Softbums
  • Gro Via AIO
  • Gro Via AI2
  • bumGenius! 4.0
  • bumGenius! Elemental
  • Smartipants Smart Fit Cover
  • Smartipants OS
  • Fuzzibunz OS
  • Charlie Banana OS
  • Little Beetle velour fitted
  • and a Rumparooz and Sprout Change V2.0 is getting added soon.

I think that is all but there might be more.

While it will be difficult my plan is to either photograph or film the fit of these diapers on a newborn as well.  Thanks for all of your input.  I hope when all is said and done this will be a very beneficial experiment for new parents looking for newborn cloth diapers!

When will we max out the cute cloth diaper names?

Lately I have had this nagging thought in my head: One day we are going to run out of cute cloth diaper names.  The good news is that this will be due to the growth of cloth diapers as an industry and the many brands that are out there and those that have yet to be made and named.  The bad news is we will not have enough cute names to go around.

FuzziBunzLogoThe pioneers of cloth diapers had it easy.  Every synonym for “rear end” was available.

The first modern pocket diaper chose the name “Fuzzibunz”

Then the next pocket diapers came along.  bumGenius!, Happy Heineys, Rumparooz, and Smartipants.

Don’t get me wrong, not all cloth diapers reference the booty.  Some are just cute.  Kissaluvs, Lollidoo, BabyKicks, Kiwi Pie.

Then there are the just plain weird, like Krap Katchers.

I suppose there will always be room for cute names, but only so many ways you can say “butt” in a funny and adorable way.

So what do you think?  Am I underestimating the creativity of future entrepreneurs?  Or are we doomed?  And, I want to hear your favorite cloth diaper name!  Leave it in the comments!

A Peek at my Cloth Diaper Stash

Instead of the usual video review, I am taking a week off.  I only have 3 diapers I am reviewing and need an extra week before I am ready to publish.

So….. since many YouTube commenters and blog readers alike have asked, I took a short video to show my most used diapers.  We are definitely a pocket family.  I still have my original bumGenius! 3.0′s that I bought while pregnant.  Those make up a large percentage of what I use daily.  They are also great for my husband who gets tired of using a different diaper each change.  That is my job!

So if you didn’t see this already on Facebook, take a look!  Expect a video on how I do my cloth wipes in the future as well.

Kissaluvs Marvel AIO Giveaway sponsored by Diaper Daisy *closed*

Since Sarah from Diaper Daisy and I LOVE this diaper we are giving one Kissaluvs Marvel away to one of you!

Picture 12

About Diaper Daisy:

I was not always a cloth diaper user. My first were actually two – twins – and I had not heard much about cloth diapers other than what my mom used. I was so overwhelmed with the thought of bringing two babies home that I never actually did much research about diapering at all. I felt bad about filling up the landfills (times two – yikes!), but didn’t really see any other options.

When my third came around, I was more aware of today’s cloth diapering options. I had friends who were using them with much success. I decided to check them out, and I was floored by how many different types of diapers there were and how easy they all seemed to be.

My husband was hesistant until I pointed out the cost savings. We should be saving at least $1500 over the cost of disposable diapers, and that is just for one child!

When the baby arrived, cloth diapering quickly and easily became a part of our life. I loved that we were saving money, eliminating a lot of trash, and keeping natural fabrics against the baby.

After my experience deciding to take the leap into cloth diapers, I realized how many more people would make the switch if they just had the chance to be exposed to them, the opportunity to see just how easy they are.

When the opportunity arose to purchase Diaper Daisy, I was excited about getting the chance to help expose parents to the ease of cloth diapers, as well as ideas on how to take other small steps to make life healthier for their children.

At Diaper Daisy, we want to provide quality, convenient and FUN cloth diapering and baby products to moms of babies and young children.

We offer cloth diaper demonstrations, consultations and support. We want to assist and encourage you every step of the way on your cloth diapering journey – whether you are new, novice or expert!

My hope is that more moms and caregivers will learn about cloth diapering and spread the word of how easy and FUN it can be! If there is ever anything I can do to help you on your cloth diapering journey, I would love to help!

At Diaper Daisy you can find the biggest brand names in cloth diapers, including Kissaluvs, Bum Genius, Fuzzibunz, Knickernappies, Happy Heineys, and Thirsties to name a few.

You can also to a two week cloth diaper trial with 5 different brands of diapers with no obligation to buy, to see if cloth diapers are right for you!!!

Diaper Daisy has more than diapers. There are diapering accessories like snappis, wipes, and wet bags, and items for mom!

Kissaluvs Marvel All-in-One Review

I have been wanting to preform and share this review since last September.  I first saw the Kissaluvs Marvel AIO when I went to the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas.  This diaper was by far my favorite new reveal at the show.  I couldn’t wait for it to become available for consumers and neither could my roomate, Sarah, who own Diaper Daisy.  She was also impressed by the diaper.  We talked about working together for a review and giveaway when it came out, and we did!  Sarah sent one diaper fro me to review, and will be giving a DDL reader one of these diapers!

Ease of Use ✰✰✰✰ I would LOVE to give this diaper a 5, because it really is, but to a newbie using cloth diapers the snaps might still give you trouble.  If you have used snaps before then this diaper is a breeze.  There are 4 snaps total to affix when changing the baby.  Of course taking the diaper off of the baby is even easier.  No unstuffing or attaching laundry tabs.  Just put it in the pail!  To size the diaper attach 3 snaps in the rise you need.

Bang for the Buck ✰✰✰✰ For an All in One of this design, one that is quick drying, the price point is pretty darn good.  This diaper retails for 23.00.  The Bum Genius Organic AIO is 25, and the Easy Fit by Bummis is 27.00.  One reason for this is that the materials are not as expensive.  The soaker is microfiber and the lining is microfleece.  However, the diaper is well made and is unique.

Performance ✰✰✰✰✰ So I do love this diaper.  The soaker is absorbent enough for daytime, and for some even nights.  I didn’t need to add an insert, but you can if you need it.  The fit was good, no leaks or gaps.

Fit ✰✰✰✰ I liked the fit of this diaper, on the medium snap it was perfect for my son.  I can’t attest to the newborn setting and what age it starts fitting, or how many pounds it truly lasts until on the unsnapped.  The legs left no red marks, or the back.  I am happy my son has more room for growth in it because it has become a favorite.

Overall- The diaper is pretty awesome.  All of the benefits of a pocket (quick drying, insert getting clean outside of the diaper) but the function and form of an All in One.  There is no stuffing, just pulling or turning the diaper right sided in, depending on your washer’s agitation.  For me, the diaper flipping inside out.  Turning it was  still easier than stuffing.
