Rumparooz One Size Cover Review

Rumparooz keep coming out with new products!  I can hardly keep up, and they have more on the horizon.  Known for their popular One Size G2 Pocket Diapers and tiny Lil’ Joeys Newborn diapers, they have released a One Size and Newborn Cover as well.  Like their other diapers this comes with the option of Snaps or Velcro.  I reviewed the one size cover.

Ease of Use ✩✩✩✩ I chose the aplix version since putting a fitted on, then a cover, already takes more time than a pocket or all-in-one diaper.  I wanted to save myself some time.  If you choose the snaps it will take a little bit longer to put on the baby.  Keep in mind you have 2 things to put on.  To size the diaper it is very easy, there are 3 snaps across and 3 rise snap settings.  You won’t need to do this very often at all.

Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩ The Newborn version (4-12 pounds) is 10.00 and the One Size cost 14.00. I think this price is pretty fair, though higher than many well known covers in the same category. RaR use TPU and vibrant, brand specific prints that many are willing to pay a premium price for.

Performance ✩✩✩✩ I used these primarily overnight and had no leaks with them at all. This is partially because I use great, absorbent fitteds with them. The cover has nice double leg gussets to hold in all that icky runny newborn poop.  I did have an incident with a trifolded flat and a gigantic newborn poop that defied the gussets and I was shocked.  I think much of this was related to the user (me) not getting it on properly!

Fit ✩✩✩ For my 17 pounder the cover fits him on the medium (2 snaps exposed) rise snap. For whatever reason I always find this setting on the RaR to fit strangely on my kids.  The aplix strip did rub my son’s stomach once so I have been extra careful with how I put it on him ever since. Snaps would obviously not cause this issue.

Overall: I wanted to fall in love with this cover because I was not in love with the G2. I wanted to love it because it would give me the chance to play with those fun prints. I don’t hate it, but it wasn’t love. I know many of you are RaR fans and I am a little jealous. They definitely worked for our purposes though. I just don’t think it fit my son as comfortably as I wanted it to.  I might have liked the snaps version more since the thick aplic made the cover “bubble” up the way it was sewn.

Where to buy: Check out my affiliate, Kelly’s Closet, for the Newborn and One Size Cover.  Free shipping over 49!

I purchased this cover for the review myself using affiliate credits from Granola Babies. The people want what they want and I am happy to oblige when I can.

Intro to Cloth Diaper Series: What Are Sleeve Cloth Diapers?

Intro to Cloth Diaper Series: What Are Sleeve Cloth Diapers?

Welcome to my next installment in my Introduction to Cloth Diaper Series. This week I am tackling Sleeve Cloth Diapers. Never heard the term before?

A “Sleeve” cloth diaper is basically a pocket diaper but with an opening at the front and back of the diaper. In the best situation this means the insert should agitate out during the wash cycle.

According to my definition of a pocket diaper in my last installment a “sleeve” diaper is a pocket, however I felt it deserved its own segment (the tongue style will also get a stand alone post)

The most popular sleeve diaper is probably the Smartipants, which I reviewed here. Another example would be the Thirsties Duo Diaper, which I have also reviewed. Both are seen in my video demonstration.

What is wonderful about sleeve cloth diapers is that you get all of the benefits of a pocket (inserts are removed and get cleaner than an AIO, dry times typically fast, inexpensive, customizable absorbency) but without the drawback of having to remove the insert before washing.  Like a pocket, you will still have to stuff it with the insert again before use.

The average pocket diaper is 17.95, a Smartipants will run you 14.95 and a Thirsties Duo Diaper is 18.50. Other sleeve diapers will remain in that range, whereas an AIO can cost closer to 20-25 depending on the brand.

Sleeve diapers make great diaper bag diapers because while out you can skip un-stuffing the pocket before placing it in your wet bag, or worse, after it has been in your wet bag for a few hours and it has “ripened” up a bit.

Sleeve diapers are perfect if you don’t mind the laundry side of cloth diapers (stuffing) but prefer not to touch the dirty inserts.  They are usually trim, are economical, and come in a few brands and varieties to suit most consumers’ tastes.  It’s like an All-in-One and Pocket had a hybrid baby, not to be confused with hybrid diapers-that is another installment!

Smartipants are only sold through their website (they stopped selling in retail outlets a few months ago as best I can tell).  You can find Thirsties Duo Diaper at my affiliate Kelly’s Closet and many other cloth diaper stores!

Any questions on sleeve diapers, or other cloth diaper inquiries, leave a comment.  Also, if you have a topic you want to be covered in the series let me know!

Diaper Pails Versus Hanging Wet Bags- Dirty Cloth Diaper Storage Debate

Diaper Pails Versus Hanging Wet Bags- Dirty Cloth Diaper Storage Debate

So you have decided to use cloth diapers.  Awesome!  Now you are wondering what you do with the dirty diapers?  Disposable diapers go in a diaper pail or trash can.  Where can you put your dirty diapers until wash day where they won’t stink up the joint?

Most families choose between 2 options: A traditional Diaper Pail or a Hanging Wet Bag.  In either case, you will need a PUL (waterproof material, same used for most cloth diaper covers and shells) lined bag of some sort to either put in your pail, or to hang in the nursery to place your dirty diapers in.  There are certainly other options, and I will list those at the end as well.  Full disclosure: the links provided are affiliate links.

Diaper Pail:

If you have ever walked inside of a Target and shopped for baby stuff you have seen the aisle of large boxes containing a variety of different diaper pails.  The most famous being the “Diaper Genie.”  Unfortunately, most pails designed for disposable diapers are simply not cut out for cloth diapers.  Pails that have turning lids like the Diaper Genie don’t have room enough in their openings for many cloth diapers to fit through.  Other brands, like the Diaper Dekor (which I use) can be modified to accommodate cloth diapers and an elastic edged reusable pail liner.

Diaper Dekor Plus Diaper Disposal System

There are also cloth diaper pails which have locking lids.  I have not personally used one since I prefer the convenience of a step can.  Some of these pails use mesh bags to hold the dirty diapers.  The good news is that the mesh allows the diapers to breathe which can prevent odors.  The bad news is that the wet and soiled diapers could get the pail itself dirty.  You would have to wash the pail more often than if using a PUL pail liner.  Locking lids are great for curious little ones.  Since most people do not keep wet pails (pails with water and bleach to soak diapers between washes) at least there isn’t a worry about drowning.

Bambino Mio Dirty Nappy Cloth Diaper Bucket & Lid

A third pail option isn’t technically a pail at all.  Plastic or Metal step lid trash cans can work as a pail also.  You will just want to check the sizing and make sure a pail liner will work.  Many of these trash cans are too big or too small.  I found a hard time locating one to fit a pail liner when I shopped for one, so I bought my Dekor.

Umbra 12-Gallon Trash Can

With a pail you have the option of using an elastic edged pail liner, which functions like a trash bag, but that you wash over and over with your dirty diapers.  Many major brands make their own version.  Wahmies has a popular model which also has an elastic loop that you can use to hang it from a door knob if you choose.

Wahmies Diaper Pail Liner

Wet Bags:

Hanging Wet Bags come in a large variety of options.  There are long skinny bags, short wide bags, zippering bags, drawstring bags, colorful print bags, plain solid colored bags, and so on.  These bags also come in a variety of sizes.

The best hanging wet bag is going to have an unsnappable handle.  These can be looped around anything sturdy enough and closed.  If you have bars on your changing table this is a good place to put one, other than a door knob.  Or, you can opt for a bag made to go on a door knob like the Knickernappies.

Knickernappies Doorknob Diaper Pail

Another cool option out there is the wet/dry bag.  This bag has a front pocket that can be used for clean diapers, and the main pocket is lined with PUL for dirty diapers.  I usually recommend this bag for daycare families.  They can send the bag with clean diapers and have it returned with dirty ones, all in one shot.

Planet Wise Wet/Dry Diaper Bag

You don’t HAVE to put a wet bag in your nursery.  There is the option to hang a wet bag in your bathroom.  Since you will at some point likely be spraying down dirty diapers, this is a convenient place to put them, especially if your bathroom is far away from the baby’s room.  Some people also hang them in their laundry area.

If you are in the market for a MASSIVE bag because you either have more than one child, like to go a while before doing laundry, or will be going on a long trip, then you need the Bummis Fabulous Wet Bag.  I use this one every time I go on vacation!  It can be hung on a door knob or used as a pail liner.  It can hold enough diapers for 4-5 days worth of dirties.

Bummis Fabulous Wet Bag (Large)

(All of the wet bags I mentioned can also be purchased at my affiliate, Kelly’s Closet, if you would like to support my blog!)

Diaper Pails:

Pros:

Can contain Odors

Some are lockable

Those with step lids are hands free and easy to use.

Cons:

Take up more space

Might be hard to find one that works with a pail liner

If they don’t lock, toddlers can explore them and add/subtract items

Eyesores in the nursery

Hanging Wet Bags:

Pros:

Take up less space

Can be placed on door knobs, changing table, etc.

Inexpensive

Choice of cute patterns

Choice of various sizes to suit your needs

Cons:

Zippering/ Unzippering can be a pain

Drawstring bags might not close all the way

Might not be as smell proof as a pail

Other Options:

There are also other options for storing dirty diapers.  Many of them cost little to no money.

Washer:

Some families wash so often that they go ahead and throw the dirty diaper directly in the washer.  Once they have a load they start it up.  There is no middle man and no cost to this method.  If you have basement laundry then this is probably not a great option, unless you are trying to tone your legs!

Hamper:

You could also put the diapers in a hamper, which will more than likely be stored in your laundry room.  The obvious issue here is getting the hamper dirty.  You may or may not care.

Utility Sink:

Same concept as the washer.  You can use a utility sink to rinse off diapers and leave them there until wash day.

Plastic Bags:

Not the ideal option, however those grocery bags many people use as trash can liners can also be used as travel wet bags in a pinch.

Pail with no liner:

Some bucket type pails can be used with no pail liner.  You will likely end up washing the pail often, or ignoring the mess the diapers are leaving.  This method requires you to take the pail with you to the washer and dump your diapers in.

Gro Via All in Two (Hybrid) Review

Gro Via All in Two (Hybrid) Review

Kelly’s Closet provided a Gro Via Hybrid for me to make a comparison video for their blog.  But I still wanted write my review and compare the function of the Gro Via to the Gro Baby.  The Gro Baby inspired me to begin doing video reviews.  Since that first video I have done 61 others!  So thanks Kelly’s Closet for the chance to review the Gro Via AI2.

Ease of Use ★★★★ I do find switching the inserts out for a new one to be fairly simple, although depending on the age and wriggliness of your baby it might take longer. More because you are trying to keep them out of trouble than because they are moving, which means you can’t be snapping the soaker in because your hands are tied up. Once the new soaker is in if you have the velcro version of the Gro Via is a very easy application, if you have snaps it is easy too, but you have 4 snaps to affix. The only tough part is closing the laundry tabs and getting underneath those hoops. It is tricky when the aplix is very sticky.

Bang for the Buck ★★★★ Being that the Gro Via is an All in Two you can save a lot of money with this system. Buying 6-10 shells and 20-36 soakers would be all you need, depending on the age of the child.

Performance ★★★★ I have had a good experience so far. The soakers are absorbent, and there is the option of adding a booster if you need it. There have been times I have changed him and the insert is SOAKED but no leaks. Works overnight for us but not might for those very heavy wetters. I do enjoy the addition of PUL backing on the soakers. This makes me feel better about using multiple soakers in a row since the shell is not very wet. I don’t have to air the shell out between use.

Fit ★★★★★ The Gro Via has improved the sizing of their diaper compared to the Gro Baby. They have added more rise which has also improved the size of the thighs. While the thighs do still seem on the smaller end compared to some other one size diapers, they work well for my average sized toddler. And they size down really small. I plan on using these for my newborn when he is here.

Overall- I am very happy with the improvements made by Gro Via. They listened to their customers and addressed the issues people were having with the aplix. I had those same issues with the aplix wearing out. At this point it is very stick and I expect the laundry loops will help over time. The PUL backed soakers are brilliant and they make this an easier to use system. Gro Via also make disposable inserts for travel, which, while not as absorbent as a disposable, are better for your baby if you HAVE to use them for travel.

All together

I added a few other odds and ends, including some photographs of babies wearing the embroidered “Ellen” diapers and washing instructions from Kelly’s Closet.  In case you are wondering, the Rumparooz, Fuzzibunz, and Bottombumpers diapers were sent free of charge for the package. I paid out of pocket for the Zany Zebra (Which I wasn’t even supposed to get but there was a mixup so I felt obligated to pay, long story, and why I have 2 cupcake diapers for Ellen’s niece, Eva) and the embroidery on the covers which were used for the video shoot.  The covers themselves were donated by Kelly’s Closet (5 of them).  Kim from Rockin’ Green gave me the sample but she had no idea it would end up in the package.  I bought the Wiggly Gigglers (in case you are wondering, I made a Shake Weight for Babies video to send to Ellen for laughs)

As suggested by the title, this is my last effort for Operation Fluffy.  I have put a lot of time, effort, and money into the operation.  If this doesn’t work, nothing will.  This package is literally being handed to Ellen Degeneres by someone in her staff.  Let’s just say I have a friend, who has a friend, who has a friend that works at the show.  ’Nuff said.

I want to thank everyone who has been involved in Operation Fluffy. It has been a fun ride!  A special thanks to the generous companies who sent in items for the video and the package! And a thank you to Jillian’s Drawers who allowed me to invade their community room to film the video (which is being edited still, it will be in the package.) A VERY special thank you to the moms and dads who brought their babies to be filmed in the video!  I can’t wait to share it with you all.  If these adorable diapers don’t convince her how cool cloth is, nothing will.

Survey Says….. New Cloth Diaper Survey Conducted by DiaperShops.com

babydiaperSOUTH PARIS, Maine (June 9, 2010) – In tough economic times it’s no surprise that more budget-strapped parents are switching to cloth diapers to save money. In fact, a new online survey out today conducted by Harris Interactive for DiaperShops.com, a leading online cloth diapering boutique, reveals that one-third (33%) of parents who use disposable diapers say they would be “extremely” or “very likely” to switch to cloth diapers after learning that cloth diapers could save them $2,000 over the course of their baby’s diapering years.

However, just because parents say they are willing to switch doesn’t mean they are. The survey found that only approximately one in ten parents (9%) with children in diapers (ages 0-2 years) use or have used cloth diapers. This number represents a substantial minority of the parenting population.

Kelly Wels, the founder of DiaperShops.com, says this study exposes a knowledge gap among American parents. “It is true that cloth diapers can save a family $2,000 and more over the course of their baby’s diapering years; that said, it’s evident from this survey that parents don’t know just how much is at stake by switching to cloth diapers,” she says.

Environment, Diaper Rash Top Concerns for Parents

One-third (33%) of disposable diapering parents say they would be “extremely” or “very likely” to switch to cloth diapers after they learned how disposable diapers negatively impact the environment. Experts say disposable diapers take 250-500 years to decompose in a landfill and more than 27 billion diapers end up in landfills each year.

Other key findings from the DiaperShops.com and Harris Interactive survey include:

• Moms are more likely than dads to switch to cloth diapers out of concern for the environment. Sixty percent of moms say they would be likely to switch to cloth diapers for environmental reasons, while only 49 percent of dads were likely to do so.

• Moms are more concerned about diaper rash. Almost 30 percent of moms say they would be “extremely or very likely” to switch to cloth diapers if it could ease or eliminate diaper rash. Only 19 percent of dads say diaper rash is a reason to switch. (Note: This survey was conducted just prior to the firestorm surrounding diaper rashes alleged by parents using Pampers Dry Max for their babies.) • Dads like the convenience of washing diapers at home. Forty six percent of dads who use disposable diapers for their babies say they would be “extremely likely” to switch to cloth diapers after learning that cloth diapers can easily be washed at home with only 2-3 extra loads of laundry per week. In comparison, only 35 percent of moms say they are “extremely likely” to switch for the same reason.

• Convenience is the number one reason for choosing disposable diapers. Of the 91 percent of parents with children ages 0-2 who currently use disposable diapers, an overwhelming majority (85%) cite convenience and ease of use as the main reason for their choice. Sixteen percent choose to use disposable diapers because they think that cloth diapers are more expensive.

• Financial reasons for using cloth diapers are greater for parents in the Midwest. In fact, 68 percent of parents there say they would be “extremely,” “very” or “fairly likely” to switch to cloth for financial reasons. Compare that to 55 percent in the Northeast and 52 percent in both the South and the West who say they would switch to cloth diapers to achieve financial savings.

“Cloth diapering has been a growing phenomenon among today’s modern parents, especially when parents have done their homework to learn about all of the easy-to-use cloth diapering options like FuzziBunz®, Happy Heinys, GroVia, Kissaluvs, BabyKicks and bumGenius,” said Wels. “However, even though these options exist, this survey reveals that there is a significant misinformation about cloth versus disposable diapers.”

Tereson Dupuy, the founder of FuzziBunz® and mother of the modern cloth diaper, agrees, “To solve this knowledge gap, we need conscientious parents to take an active role in learning about their diapering options and finding what truly works best for them by taking into account cost, health of baby, convenience and style. Cloth diapers have come a long way and are nothing like the diapers of yesteryear!”

About the Survey Methodology This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of DiaperShops.com from May 5-11, 2010 among 1,144 parents of children age 17 years or younger, 276 of whom have children ages 0-2 years. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. For complete survey methodology, including weighting variables, please contact sarah@diapershops.com.
