My son is lacking a fluffy bum :(

My son is lacking a fluffy bum :(

I, the Queen of Cloth, have my son is disposables.  For the time being.  I came to the hard decision to use disposables on our quick trip to Tampa, FL.  We leave tomorrow morning but I am not willing to leave my diapers dirty in the pail so I recently changed him from his last cloth diaper to his first disposable for a few days.

We decided to buy Huggies Pure and Natural.  They are made with organic cotton and lack many of the chemicals found in traditional disposables.  I have heard  good things about their performance, smell (they aren’t supposed to smell like a sposie), and feel.  I was hoping to find the disposables that are made from corn and break down but I couldn’t.

Why aren’t I using G Diapers?  Well, I was hoping to use them but I ruled them out because I only have 3 covers.  There is a laundry facility but I would be having to wash my covers quite a few times while in Tampa.

Many of you may find my decision shocking, or you might think I am lazy.  I am feeling pretty bad about my decision too.  But, if you saw us on our last trip you may understand why I want to simplify my life for 4 days.

A Well Meaning Husband

A Well Meaning Husband

Yesterday morning it was my turn to sleep in.  Hallelujah!  This meant my husband got to do the first diaper change of the day.  Well, I had very few diapers to choose from that were clean.  There was a load of clean, dry diapers in the dryer… which is in the basement.  I believe the choices available for my husband were fitteds, g diapers, gro baby, and a straggling pocket.  He chose a Piddle Poddles fitted.

A bit after this change my husband brings my son in to my bed for me to nurse him.  This is how this conversation went.

“He is wearing a fitted.  He needs a cover.  This isn’t waterproof.”

“Oh, ok.  He is hungry.”

“I will feed him when he has a cover on, I don’t want pee to leak through in my bed or on me.”

Shortly after: Husband enters.

“Here.”

“This isn’t a waterproof cover.”

“What do you mean, it is a cover.  There are now two layers of fabric.”

“Yes, but this is a G Diaper cover, not a waterproof cover.  Go get a Gro baby and just use that as a cover.”

He was able to find a gro baby and put it on our son.  I don’t actually own “covers”.  I use fitteds coverless around the house for when I want my son’s junk to be able to breathe.

I am lucky enough to have a husband who supports my cloth diapering addiction, in practice and in the financial department as well.  Sometimes, we have “misunderstandings” such as these, where I suggest a specific diaper be used, and he has no clue what I am talking about.  Or, I don’t request a particular diaper and he picks one that won’t work for the situation at hand.  At least he knows which diapers are “nighttime” diapers (the thick ones heh) and which ones to use during the day (most of the time.)  I have heard stories from other moms whose husbands refuse to change a cloth diaper, so I consider myself pretty lucky.  Thanks hubby!

P.S.

I was able to sleep in to 10:30.  I was a happy mama!

Gro Baby vs G Diapers- Video comparison

Here is how I came up with the figures you saw in the film:

I used this website to get the number of diaper changes a baby will need from birth to 30 months.  Since G Diapers have 2 different sizes of flushable inserts I had to estimate the age they would switch from a small to a med/large.  I used 4 months.  So up to 4 months I used the amount of small flushable inserts that come in a package (40) and after 4 months I used 32, the number in a med/ large package.  I then had to do the math.  Say there are 990 changes in a 3 month period.  I divided 990 changes by the number of flushable inserts in a pack (40) and multiplied that number by the cost of a package (14.49) This would be the cost of that time, and repeat for the many different stages.  Then I had to add the cost of covers- the cheapest you can get a G diaper cover new is 16.99 so I used this number- to the total cost of the flushable inserts.  I said 15 covers would be a good number, 5 for each size.  My total number was 3,793.13 for G diapers using only flushable inserts- birth to 30 months.

For G diapers with prefolds I only had to calculate the total cost of 15 covers at 16.99 each, plus the cost of infant sized prefolds- about 24 prefolds.  This came to only 296.85.

The Gro Baby was the easiest.  I began adding the items individually which was well over 650 dollars.  But most sites sell a package deal which includes 12 shells, 24 soakers, and 16 boosters.  This is only 365.00.  Since these are one size this is a onetime cost that lasts until potty training.

I did this comparison to help anyone out who is trying to choose between the two diapers.  They are both great as a diaper bag diaper since they are less bulky.  I hope this video was helpful!

Not cool, man

I am without a laptop.  For anyone reading my blog this means I will not be frantically updating as much as usual.  The other bad news in relation to this is that my data for the gro baby/ g diaper comparison video I had planned was on that laptop.  It should still be there when it is repaired.  The video will be done once I have her back in my possession.  Not cool.

Cool: I finally caught my son rolling on the Flip video camera.

I will try my best to get some great new stuff on here!  Just be patient, my mind does no work well on a PC!  The good news is that my house is looking a lot cleaner without the laptop to tempt me.

Diaper Laundry…..

I am just not in the mood for diaper laundry today. My basement is frigid and my body aches for some reason or another. Then there is the issue of that GIANT box blocking my path from my apartment to the stairs. Currently they are on the hot wash/ cold rinse/ cold rinse cycle with NO detergent. I am also prepping my Gro Baby diapers, the two new colors I got in the mail on Thursday.

We are flying to San Antonio in a few weeks. This is exciting since we haven’t been for over 5 years. My husband’s family lives there and none of them have met Fletcher. The practicalities of trying to continue cloth diapering on a trip weighing on me. I am going to use a mix of G diapers and Gro Baby diapers, which should lessen the load. When we drove to Charlotte I brought essentially every diaper I owned. As nice as that was, flying does not allow for 5 suitcases of fluff! I may break down and buy the flushies for the g diapers; they will only be used for the airport/ plane ride. Something about wet diapers sitting in my bag for hours does not sit well with me. After our trip I will be sure to let people know how flying with fluff went.

To the basement I go to check my agitation, I want to see if there are any suds, to ease my mind….

Experimentation and Poll

For first time visitors: ignore :) For anyone who has been visiting the past few days I have made some changes and will continue to make changes. I am still getting the hang of this “blog” and ways to enhance it for readers and myself. I will be customizing the look further; I have a really cool photo shoot planned. It may happen today even!!! I did get the ads started but I don’t think they detract too much from the overall appearance. Do you? I have recently added Google Friend Connect; you can become a follower of my blog by logging in under your Google handle, Yahoo ID, or AIM username. If you have none of these- sorry. I also put my twitter up. I can’t promise I will have any exciting updates but follow me and you will be updated as soon as I post a new blog. This is a great way to keep up to date with the blog.

Like I have stated before, my next video review will be a comparison of Gro Baby Diapers and G Diapers. I think this will be very helpful for some of you who are new to cloth and can’t decide a good “on the go” diaper. Cloth is bulkier than disposables. For the space you can fit 2 regular cloth diapers or around 10 disposables!!! G Diapers and Gro Baby offer a solution for that. Keep an eye out for the review.

What diaper would you like to see a review of?

Babywearing FTW!

I just met my husband for lunch.  I was naughty and had Arby’s- a beef and cheddar and a jamocha shake.  I have been good this week so I cheated a little.  Plus as of today I am officially down to my pre-pregnancy weight!  I still have a few to lose but hurray!  After lunch Fletcher and I went to Wal-Mart (ewww) to get some clothes pins and baby sunscreen.  I put him in my rockin’ baby sling in the kangaroo hold (facing forward with legs tucked in indian style) and we did our shopping.

Generally, he is not a happy baby while shopping.  I can wear him, put him in his stroller, or whatever.  He is not happy!  Today, he was AMAZING.  He held my hand while I pushed the cart almost the entire time, or he played with my reusable shopping back which was in the front of the cart in the seat.  Of course everyone was staring and saying “awwww how cute” and whatnot.  Babies in pouches= people magnet.  They are quite the eye catching accessory.  While I checked out he got fussy but then it was in the car and he loves riding in the car.

One more thing.  Baby sunglasses or hats are also people magnets.  In my husband’s office everyone was goggley eyes over his sunglasses.  And at the park when he wore a golf hat it sparked many comments.  So yeah, they are needed but it is kind of annoying.  I know my baby is cute but I am not sure I need everyone to stop and tell me!  Well, I guess they can!   I need to mail a package so I think we are going to walk to the post office.  Woo-hoo sunshine!

And for everyone finding me, leave a comment and say hello or sign up to be a follower!   I am going to do another video soon comparing the gro baby diaper and g diapers!!!
