Fluffy Mama of the Week: Tara

Fluffy Mama of the Week: Tara

Meet this week’s Fluffy Mama: Tara!

About Tara:

My name is Tara and my husband and I met just a month after I moved back to Minnesota from Michigan and in 2008 on our 5 year anniversary we married! We welcomed our daughter into the world in December 2009! Before my daughter was born I worked full-time in accounting and now I have my dream job, a stay-at-home-mom! I love sightseeing, taking pictures and blogging, thesmalltownmom.com, in my free time!

How long have you been cloth diapering?

I have been cloth diapering since my daughter was three weeks old, so a little over 8 months now.

What made you decide to start?

My start to cloth diapering is actually quite interesting. We received a bunch of bumGenius 3.0’s and AIO’s from one of my husband’s clients when my daughter was first born and at the time we were using disposables. They sat for awhile at our house while I decided what to do with them. After reaching out for help to my local Momslikeme.com cloth diapering group they gave me the support and confidence I needed to try it out. I’ve been hooked ever since, so I like to say that cloth diapering choose us!

What was your first purchase and why?

I wanted to try a few different things to see what I might like so my first purchase was prefolds, Bummis covers and Rocky Mountain pockets. To my surprise I fell in love with the prefolds and covers!

How much do you think you have spent on your diapers total?

So far my total investment has been $350. This includes some diapers that I have purchased and then sold because they didn’t work out for us.

Have your family/ friends been supportive?

Most of them yes, a few of them I think hoped this would just be a phase and that I would eventually go back to disposables. But most of them love to learn about the different types of diapers I have in my stash and how to use them, it’s great!

What has been the most rewarding aspect of cding?

Putting the dirty diaper in a wet bag instead of the trash can! The feeling is amazing because I am not only saving a diaper from the landfill but that is money I am keeping in my wallet!

What is your favorite diaper to use?

It has changed through the years, currently its a Fuzzibunz One-Size. With a 33 lb. 3 year old, she can tell me how the diapers feel. Just recently, several of our standby one-size diapers were “too tight”, and so we’ve had to look for a new option!

What has been the biggest challenge to your success at cding?

I think in the midst of a very busy work at home mom career and raising a child, its hard to find time to wash! :) Thankfully, testing different soaps we come up with and products does give me motivation to have dirty diapers handy at all times!
Also — they say that cloth diapered babies potty learn faster, and that hasn’t been the case with us! :) We’re still struggling with the potty unfortunately, and I think part of it may be my daughter loves her “bipers” so much!

And anything else you want to discuss!!!

I’ve been washing our own cloth diapers for 3 years now, but in the midst of all of that, I have answered thousands of questions and trouble shooted for many moms. I hope washing is never a hindrance to cloth users, so please contact me if you ever need help! I think I’ve seen it all!

Fluffy Mama of the Week- Ashley from Crunchy Clean

Tell me about yourself:

Ashley's beautiful family!

My name is Ashley, and my husband and I started a company making “green cleaning stuff” 3 years ago called Crunchy Clean. The link is www.CrunchyClean.com — we started with an everyday laundry soap that I made when I was in graduate school, and we’ve expanded from there to include a very popular Diaper Laundry Cleaner! We make a hard water version that has been very well-reviewed, and our products are all exclusively made from vegan minerals and nothing man-made.

How long have you been cloth diapering?

3 years — we have a newborn on the way due in the Fall, so I’d say we’ll be a consecutive 6 in a few years!

What made you decide to start?

I nannied for a little boy while I was in graduate school, and something bothered me about the way disposable diapers smelled. I always wondered what was in them, so when I heard about “modern” cloth diapers when I was pregnant, it seemed very natural to research them!

What was your first purchase and why?

My first purchase was a one-size diaper sampler pack — it was all the rage three years ago! It included a Happy Heiny, Bumgenius 3.0, Mother’s Touch, and a Haute Pocket! I put them on my little girl as soon as they came and took a picture of her in each diaper!
When we started, pockets were all the rage — many of you may not believe that hybrid wasn’t even a diaper type back then ;) We haven’t even gotten to try a hybrid diaper yet!

The Stash!

On the left are two hanging wetbags folded up, then the covers, including Olive Janes covers (olivejanes.etsy.com), some wool, and sbish wool yoga pants!  Then there’s a large stash of one-size pockets — our favorites are probably the BG Elemental Diapers and the FB One-Size, but we even have some BG 3.0s in there from 3 years ago (that pink one on top!) that’s in great condition!  Next to those are fitteds in a plethora of brands and wipes!  Then, there’s the newborn stash starting in the back right — so far, we have some Thirsties Duo Diapers, Thirsties covers, Happy Heiny Mini One-Size, and a Monkey Snuggles Newborn Pocket — there are newborn fitteds and prefolds missing, as well as a bunch of toddler prefolds we use occasionally!  :O)  Can you tell we’re all girl here?

How much do you think you have spent on your diapers total?

I’ve been so blessed with diaper costs — having a work at home mom business, I’ve been able to trade and barter a bunch. So, honestly? I haven’t really kept a tally, but I can tell you that many of the diapers that have come in our house have left via a trade so I don’t have nearly as many diapers as I could have ;)
We have a new baby on the way, so now I’m focusing on the tiny diapers that have been introduced in the last 3 years — I’m so excited to give them a try! :)

Have your family/ friends been supportive?

At first, family and friends were skeptical that I’d follow through (and I think they were skeptical of how “easy” they are) and my husband used to say that if we didn’t have a business based on living green, I probably wouldn’t have continued. :)

What has been the most rewarding aspect of cding?

Knowing exactly what was going next to my very small and sensitive newborn’s skin was very important to me, and it still is. I also love not having that huge trash bag full of diapers weekly — it makes me feel good to know we’re not contributing our thousands of disposable diapers to landfills.

I think in the midst of a very busy work at home mom career and raising a child, its hard to find time to wash! :) Thankfully, testing different soaps we come up with and products does give me motivation to have dirty diapers handy at all times! Thanks Ashley for being this week’s Fluffy Mama!  I am so happy you have another baby on the way!  Your family is going to be even more beautiful!

Fluffy Mama of the Week- UpstateMomof3

Today’s Fluffy Mama of the Week is UpstateMomof3. She runs a cool blog and happens to live quite close to me! Read her fluffy story!
FluffyMama125copy
I’m Upstatemomof3 from Our Life Upstate. We are a pretty regular, all American family. We love going out and doing things – anything really. Whether it is the zoo, the museum, a site seeing trip or a hockey game we are out there loving life. We are the family who takes our ten day old baby out in the rain (it was only drizzling but still raining) to enjoy a day out together. We really have a great life and I could not ask for anything more.

How long have you been cloth diapering? I started cloth diapering last November, when my daughter was three months old.

What made you decide to start? We had been using disposables and they were constantly leaking. It actually took us awhile to give in and get cloth diapers because we had a stock pile of disposable diapers. We probably would not have ever had to buy diapers during her entire time in diapers. But they leaked at least once a day and sometimes more. So, I wanted a better choice.

What was your first purchase and why? The first thing I bought were prefolds and Thirsties covers. My mom had used prefolds on my brother and sister when they were babies and so they were the first thing that felt comfortable to me.

How much do you think you have spent on your diapers total? I have spent $485 on my stash. Granted I have sold some things and bought others but I have always kept that number. I will not buy anything until I sell what I no longer use.

IMG_9868

Have your family/ friends been supportive? My friends have. Hubby is very supportive. Our extended family is fairly unsupportive. My MIL actually offered to pay for our disposable diapers if we would switch back.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of cding? Seeing my baby in all that cuteness. :) Okay, is all seriousness I love not throwing the diapers away. I love know that every time I reuse a diaper I am helping to save our environment. It feels great. And it certainly does not hurt that it is good for the wallet.

What is your favorite diaper to use? Hmm… I really like my KCK One diapers from Purple Ducks on Etsy – she custom made them for me so they have Rangers logos on them. I love it. And they work fantastically.

What has been the biggest challenge to your success at cding? The biggest challenge is not buying buying and buying. I want everything. I want to buy more all the time. It is a big challenge. Other than that I have found the switch to cloth diapers to be so wonderful that nothing bothers me.

IMG_2064

And anything else you want to discuss!!! I guess I would just say I love cloth diapers. I am so glad I made the switch and will most definitely never go back. We made the final switch to cloth overnight as well back in March and a disposable diaper will not be used by us again – not even when we take off to Ethiopia (hopefully this fall).

Thanks for sharing! I can’t believe your MIL offered to pay for your disposables. Craziness. If you want to learn more about UpstateMomof3′s family make sure to check out her blog.

Fluffy Mama of the Week- Pamela

FluffyMama125copy

Meet our Fluffy Mama of the Week, Pamela.  Here is a little bit about her:

“I am a wife to one, affectionately called The Mister, and a mama to four. Miss O is six and a half, Wee Man is four, HB will be 3 in November, and Sweets is 5 months old. I blog about many things at the dayton time (http://daytontime.blogspot.com), and it’s my understanding that much coffee is spat upon monitors by my readers. I just opened up an Etsy shop called Revel Baby (http://revelbaby.etsy.com), where I sell woven cotton wraps, podegis, and other baby items that I make. I decided to call the shop Revel Baby because I believe that my babies are precious, and that children are our rewards. I really try to revel in my children, and to soak up their wonderfulness… especially when they are crazy and crabby and having unpleasant moments.”

haircut

How long have you been cloth diapering?  ”I have been cloth diapering since February of 2007, so about two and a half years.”

What made you decide to start? “HB has extremely sensitive skin. From the time he was born, he had a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad rash that he would scratch and scratch until his skin was raw and bloody. His yummy little neck looked like someone had actually taken a bite, and it was disgusting. I changed my diet, in case he was having a problem from my breastmilk, I eliminated every scented item in our house, including detergents, soaps…everything. I switched to organic and non-processed food, and none of my changes made a difference. The only thing I hadn’t changed was the disposable diapers. So I did some research into cloth, and invested in prefolds and covers from a seller on eBay who manufactured diapers and covers for diaper services around the country. I found the cheapest possible way to set myself up with a stash, even did the math to figure out how long I needed to cloth diaper to break even. Which, by the way, for the stuff I bought? Two and a half months. My husband and I decided to commit to cloth for two and a half months. We did not complain, we owned the decision to quit sposies cold turkey. We were flabbergasted that we did not hate cloth diapers. In fact, we invested in a set of toddler sized cloth and covers for Wee Man, and switched him to cloth at 21 months. The best part? Two days after switching to cloth, HB’s rash was gone. Not faded, not going away, not healing, but GONE. It vanished. It did take a little while for the raw, scratched-up skin to heal, but the rash disappeared.”

What was your first purchase and why? “My first purchase was 36 Chinese prefolds, regular size, for $30. I bought 7 medium sized covers, similar to Proraps, for $5 each, and a handful of Snappis for about $2 a piece. I also bought a wet bag and a pail liner from Happy Tushies, and those lasted more than two years despite being washed 3-5 times a week. I love Happy Tushies products!”

DSC07881

How much do you think you have spent on your diapers total? “I have spent less than $500 to cloth diaper 3 children, plus a little more if you count the fabric I purchased to make cloth wipes. That total includes two pail liners, a wet bag, a wonderbag, and Snappis. Oh….except recently I’ve been captured by the wool bug, and have been buying wool yarn to knit into soakers. This is turning out to be an expensive and time-consuming hobby…but the results are too stinking cute to stop!!!

Have your family/ friends been supportive? My friends have been really supportive, because pretty much all of them use cloth, too. My family thinks I’m a little nutty, but they respect our decision because it is really fiscally and environmentally responsible. I do keep some sposies on hand for my MIL, because she spends a lot of time with my babies, and I am all about cultivating that relationship!”

What has been the most rewarding aspect of cding? “Without even hesitating I have to say the health of my children is the most rewarding aspect of using cloth. The chemicals in the disposables (and we tried EVERY brand) had penetrated my baby boy’s delicate skin, and he was in constant pain because of it. I know that when I wrap a prefold around my baby’s bum that it is made of cotton. I don’t have to wonder what sort of danger lurks in the gel, or what is that substance pressed against his skin… It’s cotton. It’s natural. It’s not dangerous to his body.”

What is your favorite diaper to use? “I have tried a few brand name diapers, but I really like the prefolds. I have some wonderful Green Mountain Diapers toddler-sized that are fabulous. If we’re going to be out for the day, I use Smartipants. They go on in a flash, and you don’t have to pull out the wet insert.”

What has been the biggest challenge to your success at cding? “I think it’s great that the suggestions of challenges you listed are washing, money, leakage, fit…none of those were really a problem to us. I was really afraid of using cloth. I do not deal well with The Fluids (pee, poop, and barf), and I was certain I would spend our two month trial period throwing up. My own expectations that cloth diapering would be horrible was the biggest challenge I had to overcome. (That’s why I went with a pail liner that could just be thrown in the washer…no sticking my head or hands in a stinky, nasty diaper bucket for me!!!) I really had to work on my attitude in order to not fail at using cloth. Lucky for me, it was WAY easier and much less gross than I had imagined.”

CIMG1434

And anything else you want to discuss!!! “I really encourage mamas and daddies who are thinking about cloth, and even the ones who are wrinkling up their noses at the very idea of cloth diapering, to give it a try. There are many inexpensive options available, and honest to God, it’s not that gross. If I can handle it, you can handle it.”

Thanks Pamela, my twitter pal, for being a Fluffy Mama and sharing your story.

Fluffy Mama of the Week- Lauren

Meet our Fluffy Mama of the Week, Lauren!

FluffyMama125copy

Hi! I’m Lauren, wife to Brad for almost 6 years and SAHM to Libby (4), Emma Jane (2), and John (3 months.) In my spare time (hahaha) I love cooking, scrapbooking, reading and blogging. You can visit my family at www.snellingsstories.blogspot.com.

How long have you been cloth diapering? I have been cloth diapering for about 8 months.

What made you decide to start? I started cloth diapering because Emma Jane was suffering from severe diaper rash. She regularly would develop blisters on her bottom and even prescription diaper cream didn’t solve the problem!

John in a Smartipants

John in a Smartipants

What was your first purchase and why? The first diapers that I purchased were a fuzzi bunz and a wonderoos one-size diaper. I wanted to try both a sized diaper and a one size to compare the fit and I had heard good things about both of those brands. I wasn’t completely satisfied with either of those diapers so I ended up ordering a trial kit from an online diaper shop that included 8-10 different diapers.

How much do you think you have spent on your diapers total? I currently have two children in diapers. For the both of them I have probably spent around $500-600.

Lauren's Stash

Lauren's Stash

Have your family/ friends been supportive? For the most part. When I first announced that I was switching to cloth, there were definitely a few raised eyebrows but since then I have actually converted a couple of my friends!

What has been the most rewarding aspect of cding? I started cloth diapering for health reasons but I have found the environmental benefits of cding are just as important to me. And I LOVE how cute cloth diapers are on my babies bums!

John in a MonkeySnuggles Diaper

John in a MonkeySnuggles Diaper

What is your favorite diaper to use? For Emma Jane I love Bumgenius 3.0 diapers. I stuff them with two inserts and they hold all night! For my newborn, I prefer prefolds or kissaluvs fitteds with covers. Those things are bullet proof! I have never had a blowout diaper with cloth!

EJ in a Smartipants

EJ in a Smartipants

What has been the biggest challenge to your success at cding?  In the beginning, finding the right fit for my daughter was a challenge but once we settled on a diaper that worked we really haven’t had any issues. Restraining myself from continually buying new diapers that I don’t need simply because they are cute is probably my biggest challenge!

Anything else you want to discuss? Diaper laundry is not as difficult or time consuming as I thought it would be.

Thanks Lauren for being a Fluffy Mama and sharing your fluffy story!

Fluffy Mama of the Week- Samantha

My how time flies!  It is another Saturday, which means it is time to meet another wonderful cloth diapering mama.

FluffyMama125copy

“Hi! I’m Samantha- almost 24 years old (!!) and mom to my son Lucas who is almost 5 months old! He is my absolute joy! I blog at Mama Notes- www.mamanotes.com I write about my thoughts and experiences during motherhood as well as anything baby, pregnancy, health, fitness, kids and parenting!”

Samantha and Lucas

Samantha and Lucas

How long have you been cloth diapering? Since Lucas was 3 weeks old.

What made you decide to start? My husband and I originally decided we would cloth diaper to save money. We needed to save money any way we could! I then realized not only is cloth diapering most cost effective, its better for my baby, the environment and it just looks CUTE!

What was your first purchase and why? Bum Genius. I heard they were great and my hubby was loving the velcro and the one size feature.

How much do you think you have spent on your diapers total? Under $100. We got a lot for gifts!

Have your family/ friends been supportive? For the most part, yes. We still get the occasional ” you’re crazy” comments but we’ve learned to ignore them. I think once people realize how great it is and how it really isn’t THAT much work, they are more accepting of them! And I don’t care what people think anyways!

What has been the most rewarding aspect of cding? Seeing my boy wearing his cute diapers.   And knowing no chemicals are touching his skin and that I’m not putting more trash in the landfill. For the first three weeks of Lucas’ life we used disposables and it was disgusting how much landfill we created!!

What is your favorite diaper to use? I love Fuzzi Bunz. I’ve only tried a few brands but so far they are my favorite. I love the snaps and the way they fit my boy. THey are slim and not to bulky and come in some fun colors. Although I do wish there were more prints available!

Matching blue eyes and diaper. So adorable!

Matching blue eyes and diaper. So adorable!

What has been the biggest challenge to your success at cding? Probably the money. We’ve been blessed in that we’ve recieved a lot as gifts, but ideally we would like to get about 10 more. We don’t have the funds right now to buy any more so I just do a lot of laundry!

Anything else you want to discuss? Cloth diapering is wonderful! I thought it was going to be so much work when I started but I learned how easy it is! I’m so happy that we decided to cloth diaper. The only problem is that it gets sort of addicting and you want to spend all your “extra” money on cute new diapers!!

Thanks so much Samantha for sharing your story and pictures of your adorable son.  If you would like to be featured as a Fluffy Mama, email me at dirtydiaperlaundry@gmail.com.

Fluffy Mama of the Week- Zealand’s Mom

FluffyMama125copy

I’m Zealandsmom, 29, and I can’t remember how I got here. I remember my Mother always calling me her hippie chick, and it never bothered me, but I never would have thought I would have fallen into that mold. All my life, I was the untamed wild child. I never listened to rules and hated authority. I am NOW the proud mother of Zealand who is 21 months and Kingsley who is 7 months. I have semi-set schedules. I do an alternate vaccination schedule, I cloth diaper, I rarely tell my babies “no”, I puree organic baby food, and I am the 1st of 5 generations to breastfeed! Here is my new blog: www.zealandsmom.blogspot.com

How long have you been cloth diapering? I have been cloth diapering Zealand since birth, so roughly 21 months:)

DSC01707

BG 3.0 OS

What made you decide to start? I don’t remember what made me “find” the new version of clothdiapers but I really cannot imagine if I didn’t. It was an easy decision and DH, jumped on board easily. We knew we wanted to save money and that was our initial reason to use cloth, before we saw health reasons, and before we thought about the environment.

What was your first purchase and why? Our first purchase was 3 wonderworks AIO snaps in XS from ebay. I hadn’t found BumGenius yet and I had no idea about OS diapers! I was a newbie for sure:)

How much do you think you have spent on your diapers total? I registered for BG 2.0s for Zealand’s shower and received 12. I bought an additional 3. Same thing for Kingsley I only purchased 3 of her 15! I have since purchased a drybees fleece, a rumparooz and a knickernappies insert. So I have spent only a total of about: $150!! I have won the following diapers: 3 bumkins 2 smartipants 3 fuzzibunz 1 rumparooz 1 knickernappies 1 monkeybunz trainer 1 drybees 1 bamboo buns 1 happy heiny 2 bella bottoms

check out the cloth diaper wedgie! ;)

check out the cloth diaper wedgie! ;)

Have your family/ friends been supportive? Friends have been great, I have even converted a handful. Only 2 friends who has ever watched the babies didn’t use cloth and they never had an issues. My family has been more than supportive, although my Mom is constantly asking to buy sposies for them, when we come down to visit, so I don’t have to bring the cloth….which is weird, since she cloth diapered my sister and me. I always decline:)

What has been the most rewarding aspect of cding? I think the most rewarding now, is how empty our trash cans are. I know it seems mean or arrogant, but I feel better about our family. We have decided to go green in alot more aspects because of the diapers. If cloth is so easy, maybe other things are too!

What is your favorite diaper to use? I guess, I’d have to say BG, only because we have sooo many of them and they have been tried and true. I now find myself grabbing the rumparooz or the drybees fleece for nighttime with Zealand.

What has been the biggest challenge to your success at cding? The biggest challenge has been my BGs Velcro. It is horrible. Customer service returned them twice, and for that I’m thankful but it only lasts about 4 months and I hang dry:( I’ve been blessed to win so many diapers because with 2 in diapers, washing was getting a bit hectic with a newborn. I have had some problems finding that perfect overnight a for Zealand who sleeps upwards of 15 hours some nights and usually tops it off with an early morning BM. Yuck!

Fluffy Mama of the Week- Kim from GADBaby

FluffyMama125copy

Hi, I’m Kim the mom behind GADbaby.com! I spend my days chasing around my 2 crazy boys and sending fluffy mail to the masses. I also recently starting selling my own cloth diaper detergent called Rockin’ Green, so I always smell like cherry almond, fresh linen, buttercream…etc. So if you ever come visit, you will be bombarded with lots of colorful fluff and the overwhelming desire to have cupcakes.

IMG_0746

How long have you been cloth diapering? Oh wow, it’s been almost 3 years now I guess. I started when my son was about a year old and went until he potty trained about a year and a half later. My youngest son, who just turned 9 months has never been in a disposable diaper. My husband was there to put on his first cloth diaper! He was in the NICU for 3 days even, and wore cloth the entire time. He was a big boy at 9.7 pounds too- so all those cute little newborn diapers never saw the light of day.

What made you decide to start? My kids have really sensitive skin, and my oldest began breaking out in horrible bleeding sores. Diaper changes were really hard, and we would both be in tears by the end of it. My mom suggested that we get a few cloth diapers just to let his bottom air out. Within 3 days of being in cloth, his skin was healed and looked great. We never went back.

10

What was your first purchase and why? Our first purchase was a dozen huggabuns with trifold inserts off of craigslist. My son has really bad bleeding sores, and we were desperate! I found a girl down the street with a stash of diapers so I snatched them up. His rash was better in 3 days.
How much do you think you have spent on your diapers total? This information is usually classified, so we can’t send my husband this link! LOL Honestly, I have put in about $500 and then resell things when I am done with them to fund new things. I did go through a wool phase that got a little expensive, but I am still saving a ton of money over buying disposables. And my love of cloth has turned into a career, and that is really priceless. I get to do what I love every single day.
DSCF7610
Have your family/ friends been supportive? Absolutely! My mom was the one that suggested cloth in the first place, and then when she saw how different they were from the prefolds and vinyl pants that she used on me, she was a huge supporter. My husband is the cutest thing ever though. He goes with me to trade shows, wearing a GADBaby t-shirt and talking to Dad’s about how easy and economical cloth diapers are. He passes out my cards to pregnant women in the grocery store, and is the delivery man for the business. Every morning he goes to post office to deliver fluffy mail. I love him so! I run a playgroup here in town with 90+ moms, and I have converted quite a few of them. Most people I think, really have no idea what modern cloth diapers are really about. And I make it a point to change my son’s diaper out in the open, and let him run around in just a diaper on hot summer days. I even wear a button that says “Ask me about cloth diapers” to get people talking.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of cding? I loved it when my son was old enough to tell me how he liked his “comfy diapers” over disposables. When they are little, you know that the yummy bamboo and microfleece inners are soft, but it really makes you happy when they say “thank you mommy!” Beyond that, I love helping others. My customers do cloth for so many reasons, some it’s due to allergies and skin issues, some are trying to save money, and others are concerned about their environmental footprint. Whatever the reason, I love being about to help. It just makes my day when I get an email or a note from a customer saying “thanks”.
What is your favorite diaper to use? I know I am a bit biased, but I stand behind my GAD diapers and think they really rock. It’s all we use in this house. I have dabbled in fitteds here and there, but I always go back to the GAD’s. I have 60 right now in my son’s stash. We have 2 of every color (except for pink) and I love the fit. We are all about the bamboo inners right now, with hemp inserts. Super trim, and oh so soft.
4824_1144702707483_1524971985_362905_6427875_n
What has been the biggest challenge to your success at cding? For me, it was washing cloth diapers with our hard water. Commercial soaps broke my kids out, and caused repelling and stinkies. Then I started dabbling in WAHM detergents, and still battled with repelling and stink. I burned up the motor on our last washing machine because I was stripping diapers so much! So it became an obsession of mine to come up with a cloth diaper detergent that would work with all types of water and rinse clean. It took me over 6 months, and several rounds of testing to come up with Rockin’ Clean. I now know more about chemistry than I ever learned in college, and couldn’t be happier with the results.
And anything else you want to discuss!!! Hmmm let’s see- – A diaper sprayer is worth every cent, so invest in one once your kiddo starts solids. – If the poop isn’t “ploppable” don’t sweat it. Just throw it in the wash….it will rinse away. I am not going to get a spatula or anything else and work that hard to get poop off a diaper. I paid a lot of money for my washing machine, so I put it to work! -Don’t be afraid to dry PUL in the dryer. It actually works better when dried on medium or HOT heat, (it was created for the medical industry) If you have a cover or diaper that is leaky, put it in the dryer on hot to reseal the PUL. -Get involved in the cloth diaper community. Not only will you have like-minded people to talk diapers with, but they truly are a great group of ladies that care about each other. -If you hate changing diapers, then you are using the wrong kind. You change a lot of diapers, so make it fun by picking cute diapers, and yummy smelling detergents, wipe solutions, etc. Even my cloth wipes are cute. -Sunning diapers is like magic. I know when I first heard about it, I thought that it was a crazy idea that wouldn’t work. But an hour later my diapers looked brand new! – If your husband is hesitant on cloth diapers, buy him one or two that are especially for him. Get them in his team colors, etc and pick a style that are easy for him to use. My husband’s first pick was a camo print. He would pick that diaper at every change, and would pout if it was in the wash. Thanks so much for letting me do this!

Meet our Fluffy Mama of the Week- Marisa

Every week I would like to introduce you to another Fluffy Mama.  You have already read my stories about cloth diapering, but this is a great way to understand how other moms have come to use, and love, cloth diapering.  This week, Marisa, mom to two adorable boys, 3 years and 6 months, has answered a few questions.  You can visit her blog, Sleep is for the Weak, to learn more about her and the fam!  She has also started a fantastic 365 project.

How long have you been cloth diapering?
We’ve been CD’ing for 6 months. I didn’t CD with my first because of how living situation was at the time and honestly I was naïve to the whole situation. Once he was older and I explored the Internet more I learned about it a lot.

What made you decide to start?
As G (my 3 year old) got older, I started to learn about alternative ways of parenting. Other than the mainstream you see. I was young when I had him so most of what was told to me by those who were concerned, was the opposite of our parenting style now. I started doing research into them and gathered up the information to bring to my husband. I knew he’d be the hardest of everyone to convince. I was right!

When we learned we were pregnant with our son D, I decided to push forward with it even more. I thought that it was not only better for the environment; it was cheaper in the long run and quite adorable. I figure if I was having boys, I wanted something cute for myself to put them in. All in all, the idea of saving the $ we’d spend on disposables was the most appealing to me. I finally won the CD battle and after the hurdle in the start after our son was born, we both grew to really love them. My husband is a big fan now and doesn’t mind washing them if I ask him.

What was your first purchase and why?
Oh goodness, I think my first purchase was a BG! Why? I had heard from a lot of friends that they were a great diaper and they just raved about them. I have since grown our stash of BG’s. I couldn’t tell you the count.

How much do you think you have spent on your diapers total? This includes all children…
A good $400+. We purchased 12 fuzzibunz before D was born. We also have a local CD store that I love going to, my husband has to stop me because when I’ve seen they’ve stocked up, I want to go haha. I have also gotten quite a few from friends who’s children have outgrown them and are done having kids.

Have your family/ friends been supportive?
Our families thought we were crazy when they found out at first. Then, as they were around it more, they became much more supportive. My mom CD my brother in the early 80’s and assumed it was the same way then. I explained to her all the different sorts of diapers that are out there now and she’s fully on board. She even wants to learn how to make some. MyMILhas washed them for us when we traveled downstate to visit. So they have become much more supportive as time has passed. Friends really don’t get it because most of them don’t have children. Those who do, commend us.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of cding?
Saving money, not putting disposables into the landfills. Knowing that I may not be doing some large change but I am doing a part in making a change.

What is your favorite diaper to use?
Our BG OS’ and Fuzzibunz. I love them both. I don’t have a very big variety of diapers yet because it took D so long to grow into what we have. Now that he’s chubbier, I plan on getting more so who knows, it could be replaced as a favorite soon!

What has been the biggest challenge to your success at cding? (ie, washing, money, leakage, fit, etc)
Leaking! We had some bad leaking for a little bit but we finally got it under control. I had moments of wanting to give up because I felt every change was going to soak his outfit but luckily we got it fixed and all is well again. We had some fit problems in the start but that wasn’t because of the diapers, the kiddo was small. The biggest challenge is to not give up and give in to what is easier when something goes wrong and we didn’t.
