Swaddlebees Capri Video and Review

This is a review of the Swaddlebees Capri Cover and Insert set. This is a new product from Swaddlebees that was just recently released. The Capri cover comes in Size 1 or Size 2 and each cover has 3 size settings. The Capri inserts are sold in size 1 or 2 and have the option of either microfleece or birdseye cotton next to the baby.
Ease of Use ✩✩✩✩ You can find the Capri covers in aplix or velcro. Sizing is done by snapping down the rise and the Capri insert is easily laid into the the gusseted area inside.  An All-in-Two style system isn’t as easy as just changing out a pocket or All-in-One but this system is easier than those that snap into the cover.  The cover can just be used over fitteds or other non waterproof cloth diapers as well.
Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩ Swaddlebees products usually have a higher price tag than other similar cloth diaper products. The Capri cover and inserts are no exception. The Size 1 is 16.95 and the Size 2 is 19.95. Size 1 inserts are 12.95 for 2 and the Size 2 inserts are 15.95 for 2.  Part of the price is due to the diapers being made in the USA where the workers are paid a fair wage compared to many of the very inexpensive Made in China diapers being seen everywhere.  I had these added to my cart and kept taking them out because the price was just too much for me to spend. Luckily I ended up waiting for them to stock at Diaper Junction and I used affiliate credits. The cover is going to last forever- it is impeccably made. Since I wasn’t a huge fan of the inserts I would rather use flats inside and save the money.
Performance ✩✩✩✩ The Capri covers were bulletproof and the PUL wasn’t letting anything through. The inserts were very, very absorbent and stood up to naps and long car trips.
Fit ✩✩✩✩ If I review the Capri alone it fit really well, especially with pad folded flats as inserts. With the Size 2 Inserts and the cover on the smallest rise it was hard to get a good fit at the stomach because the insert made a bubble. I tried folding over the insert in various ways but usually would squish the insert in to prevent bumps at odd places. Also I worry about the comfort where the rise snaps down and how it touches the baby’s legs.
Overall: I certainly prefer the cover to the insert. I did appreciate the ability to choose microfleece or birdseye cotton against the baby’s skin and that the insert dries quickly. The cover looks like it will last through many, many washes and kids. The cover works well as a regular cover and as an All-in-Two system.  You can also get the Capri in the amazing print selection offered by Swaddlebees.

Oeko Popo Batumee Video and Review

Oeko Popo Batumee Video and Review

The Oeko Popo brand is not one I was familiar with before being approached to perform a review. I wasn’t even sure what type of diaper it was until I opened the package. I was pretty surprised by some of the unique features that I found. The design was really cool with a black and white pattern on the tabs and star shaped snaps for the hip snap. The snap in soaker was backed with PUL but in a one of a kind way- right to the bamboo fabric. The leg elastic could be tightened as well.
Ease of Use ✩✩✩ This is one of those diapers that can be intimidating at first. It certainly was for me, not gonna lie. Thank goodness for videos. In this case I referenced the videos from the maker of Oeko Popo and I’m afraid I didn’t do as good of a job as she did. Sizing is easy since it is uses a 3 step snap down rise. If you use this diaper as an AI2 with their inserts then you might want to watch a video. It was hard for me to find a fold that looked comfortable unless I folded it to the front. I might have been doing it wrong, not exactly sure. The maker of Oeko Popo says you don’t have to adjust the leg elastic unless you need to. If you do need to then it is easy to do, you just pull it, but you won’t really know how tight to pull it and might have some trial and error there. To loosen the elastic I also had to watch a video but didn’t find that in time before filming mine. It was hard for me to figure out but I got there eventually.
Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩✩ The Batumee retails for 24.95. It is made in the USA. It is one of the trimmest diapers I have used and I loved the fit so the price is high but it has many selling points. The snap in inserts retail for 5.95 and that is actually a really good price but the downside is that it is designed for the Batumee and wouldn’t work as well with other diapers.
Performance ✩✩✩✩✩ Amazing! The soaker was far more absorbent that I expected it to be. Everett wore it for a very long time (a change slipped my mind) and I was afraid of what I would find but that little soaker was totally saturated but the diaper never leaked! It was actually kind of cool to see the urine soaked into the soaker through the back PUL.
Fit ✩✩✩✩✩ The fit was really trim and totally conformed to Ev’s shape. He wore the diaper on the middle rise (16 months and 22 pounds) and usually only needed the 1 soaker. The cover would work with other inserts as well. I did have to tighten the leg elastic to where about an inch was hanging out of the casing. It also gets pretty small for a tiny baby.
Overall: The biggest drawback of the diaper is really just how many features it has and learning how to use them. I’m as experienced as they come when it comes to cloth diapers and I had to reference the website and videos often while reviewing it. That being said it performed and fit so well and it impressed me a lot. The Batumee has a lot going for it and is worth a look even if you just need a good cover.

Blueberry Coverall Video and Review

{email subscribers click over for the video} While I was attending the ABC Kids Expo I used a cloth diaper service. I ran out of the house for the airport in such a hurry that I left half of my diaper covers that I needed in my dryer. I asked a few kind diaper manufacturers at the event if I could get a cover or two. One of the covers I received was the Blueberry Coverall in the new print, Tweet. Oh how I love this print! And, I also love the cover. I had not reviewed it yet so I took the opportunity to do so!
Ease of Use ✩✩✩✩ The Blueberry Coverall has a snaps or aplix closure option. If you choose aplix then you will have a very easy on cover over your prefold, fitted, or flats. And even the snapping option only has 4 snaps total, 2 per tab. Sizing is incredibly easy. There are 3 size options, just snap the rise down to the size you need. It is fairly self explanatory what rise setting you will need, just remember you might have to play around with the settings a bit.
Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩✩✩ Even though the Blueberry Coverall is priced a bit higher than a few other name brand one size the quality is worth it, especially if you are looking to use these for future children. The aplix is very strong and durable and the PUL is very nice and thick. The prints are so gorgeous in person also.
Performance ✩✩✩✩✩ I really love this cover and use it as often as I can when it is clean. The gussets are fairly unique and you don’t SEE the second gusset unless you move the top one over. I like the way it is hidden. Everett did test the gussets out with an explosive poop and guess what, they worked like a charm. Thank goodness!
Fit ✩✩✩✩✩ Ev is 20 pounds and 1 year old and wears the cover on the middle rise snap, even over the bulkiest fitteds. I find some covers need to be unsnapped over those big fitteds but not this one. I should have lots of room for growth then. I do tell people to be careful with how a cover with Aplix fits because if it goes under the belly there is a risk of tummy rubbing. Snaps would of course not pose this risk.
Overall: I used the cover with flats, prefolds, and fitteds and it worked with them all. The Tweet pattern is just gorgeous and the quality of this cover is obvious when you touch it and see it in person. You can wipe it clean between uses when you need to and it air dries quickly (I handwashed it while out of town.)

Bummis Super Lite Cover Review

I really wanted to try the Super Lite because I am a huge Bummis fan and because it looks so adorable!  DOn’t ask me why, but I’m in love with the white stitching.  This review is timely because this cover works superbly with a pad folded flat! If you are waiting for my Flats Challenge Link check back later today!

Ease of Use ✩✩✩✩✩ The Super Lite is definitely one of the easiest, if not the easiest, cover I’ve ever used. The closure uses a nice hook and loop with a wide strip and big tabs. This is going to be super easy for anyone to use! Plus, the SuperLite is sized so you never have to adjust the rise. Just grab and go.  I used this cover with flats, fitteds, and prefolds.  It worked best on trimmer options for me.

Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩✩ I love that the Super Lite is only 9.95. There are people who want sized cloth diapers and covers and Bummis always caters to those people. The price of 9.95 is very affordable for a quality and durable cover that will last through more than one child. And if you only need if for one, when the child outgrow it I bet it will hold its resale value very well.

Performance ✩✩✩✩ As long as a cover is made properly and it fits properly there should be no leaks. This is the case for the SuperLite, which worked great for day and nights. Not a leak in sight.

Fit ✩✩✩ This is the only issue I had with the Super Lite. Ev is a chunky boy, his thighs are bigger than my arms! We purchased a Medium which should fit babies 16-30 pounds. Ev is 19 pounds but we are having some red marks on his super chunky thighs and we are about to max out the waist! I’m holding out hope that he will once again fit well in this diaper (and others) once he starts crawling and thins out. I think then it will be a much better fit and the red marks won’t be an issue. I’ve discontinued using it for long periods (overnight) since the red marks were much worse then.

Overall: I’m really happy to have such a simple cover in my stash and hope to use it more in the future. It can be wipes clean very easily. Plus, I just love the style of it! The simple white stitching contrast on the tabs, the modern and bold colors, and the clean front just make is so nice to look at. I bought the purple because it was so stunning. Boys can wear purple, don’t judge!

Where to Buy: DiaperJunction and most other cloth diaper retailers. (affiliate link)

Meg a Roo’s Extended Tab Prefold Review

I first heard about the Meg a Roo’s Extended Tab Prefold on Facebook. There was a lot of chatter about how great they were. I looked them up and decided that they were genius. Why didn’t I think of that? The simple addition of longer tabs at the back of the prefold gives you much more fabric to work with when putting the prefold on the baby. This really gives you a little more wear out of them and make life easier in general. Plus, these prefolds can be purchased in fun prints or colors.

Ease of Use ✩✩✩✩ For a prefold, these are easy. You can see in my video that it didn’t take very long at all to pull it over my son and secure it. Once the baby gets to prime wriggling stage it might get harder but those tabs will help. Honestly, people think prefolds are hard but it takes less time to snappi these easy prefolds on and put on a velcro cover than it takes to put on some of the snapping pocket diapers.

Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩ Usually when you hear prefold you expect a very low priced diaper- between 2-6 dollars each. Because these are not mass produced, DSQ, regular plain ol’ prefolds they cost more. They come in designer prints, they are handmade, and they are just a little more special. The infat is 8.00, mid-range is 10, and premium size is 12.

Performance ✩✩✩✩ I loved these prefolds for overnight! They are actually less bulky than many of my fitteds (but bulkier than a pocket or AIO) so they fit a little better under my son’s pajamas. My son is an average wetter and these were absorbent enough for all night without having to add any extra doublers.

Fit ✩✩✩✩ You can choose from 3 sizes. The added tabs give you more width and so you might be able to use your prefold longer than a regular rectangular version. They are bulkier than other diapers and I mostly use them at night but I am not someone who complains about those things.

Overall: There are lots of mamas who love prefolds and choose them above other, fancier diapers. The Meg a Roo’s make prefolds even easier and give you something to look at. I kept telling myself that I could see myself having a stash of these and not minding one bit, and maybe even liking it!

Weehuggers Review

I have been asked for a very long time to review a Weehuggers.  Finally I broke down and bought one.  I can’t always, nor will I, go and buy diapers to review because this is very expensive since I do one review a week.  Still, I was curious myself.  I was really impressed with the cover and the thought behind it.  Unfortunately I had a hard time filming and editing this review for whatever reason.  I had fussy kids both times.  Please disregard the bad job on these this week!

Ease of Use ✩✩✩✩ Weehuggers come in either snaps or velcro closures and have a 3 step rise system adjustment within each Size (Size 1 and Size 2). The Ccver is very easy no matter which closure method you choose, but the overall easiness will depend on what to put in it or underneath it. Some fitteds are harder than others to put on, but it you choose Weehuggers inserts to use in the cover, or another lay in option, this is the easiest way to go and make Weehuggers into an All in Two System.
Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩ One of the reasons it took me a while to review this cover is that it is pretty pricey. At 18.95 for what is, for my purposes, going to be used as a cover was a hard price tag to swallow. When I got the cover though I was so impressed with the quality of it. It looks very luxe! The velcro tabs are little mittens (and apparently this is not an automated process, it is done by hand) The PUL feels and looks really high quality, and the snaps are reinforced. Things that, while not everyone cares about or appreciates, do drive up the cost. They are also made in the USA.
Performance ✩✩✩✩ For nights I chose to use the Weehuggers as a Cover over fitteds since this is my tried and true nighttime solution. The cover fared perfectly and we both woke up dry. During the day I chose to use it with my Sustainable Babyish flats. These are awesome lay in inserts. I could replace them as needed when wet for the Weehuggers to become an AI2. In the video you might notice that there are cotton panels at the front and back which hold in your inserts. The creator, Lisa, put a lot of thought into the design because they are backed with PUL. Soft for the baby on top and water resistant behind. It isn’t 100% but it does work as long as the insert isn’t super saturated or the baby pees right on top of them somehow.
Fit ✩✩✩✩✩ Unlike another Dual Size cover I have been using, my 5 month old is on the fully snapped down rise on the Weehuggers so it gives me the impression that it will last a little longer for him. True? I won’t know for quite a while. I also liked the way the cover fit his waist. Some velcro covers tend to bunch up because it is thick and hard to flex. There were also no deep red marks or anything to make me think my son was uncomfortable in them.
Overall: I will say one thing: I can tell these covers are made with love. I don’t know that I have said this before, but just from looking at the way they were designed and thought out I see the influence of a cloth diapering mom. I wasn’t converted over from my love of Pocket Diapers, but I guarantee you this is the favorite system for oodles of parents out there. Plus, Weehuggers offer some adorable prints in Cotton Knit over the PUL. This poses a risk of wicking but for daytime use it shouldn’t happen often, if ever.  The only negative thing I experienced with the cover was what seems to be a defect in the sewing of one of the velcro tabs.  The top has peeled back a tiny bit.  It doesn’t affect function for now, I just hope it doesn’t come undone any further.

Where to Buy: You can find Weehuggers at many cloth diaper retailers, including one of my affiliate’s, Fluff Envy!

I purchased this cover to review after receiving a ton of requests.

Thirsties Duo Fitted and Duo Wrap Review

Thirsties Duo Fitted and Duo Wrap Review

I began using Thirsties way back in 2008 when my son was born.  We used their XS covers and prefolds and they worked great.  Since then they have introduced their dual size line up.  I have already reviewed their Duo Diaper, and now I am reviewing their Duo fitted and Duo Wrap which was sent by Madison Organics.

Ease of Use ✩✩✩ Fitteds seem intimidating to many because they often seem to have a huge array of snaps, maybe because the “popular” fitted out there is snap city.  There is a snaps version of the Duo fitted but it is super simple, and since the fitted has give, it goes on like butter.  They also have a velcro version.  Same for the cover, which comes in both snaps or velcro and is simple to use.  They both use a snap down rise with 3 options.  You will likely have it sized already before it goes in the baby so it isn’t an issue.

Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩ The Duo fitted is 17 and the wraps are 12.25.  Usually you only need 4-6 covers, and around 12-26 fitteds depending on the age of your baby.  I think a whole stash of these would be a little pricey but having a few for night time would be a great idea.

Performance ✩✩✩✩✩ Can I say, LOVE?  Oh my, I love these fitteds and I didn’t expect that.  I knew they would work, but I didn’t think they would become my new favorite overnight diaper!  With no extra stuffing these hold up all night (usually 10-12 hours) and the cover keeps everything in.

Fit ✩✩✩✩ Since both the fitted and the cover and dual sized my son should have plenty of room left to grow.  They do say they begin fitting at 18 pounds but my son is 17 pounds and needs to be on the middle rise snap.  As I said in the video, the fitted looks extremely comfortable and it comforms to his tummy so well!  The cover doesn’t leave any red marks or show other signs of discomfort.

Overall- Both the fitted and the wrap are easy to use, not too bulky compared to many other combinations on the market.  The innovative way the soaker is sewn in makes for no bulk when changing the rise settings.  The fitted does take longer to dry than one dryer cycle.

GEN-Y Universal Cover Review

GEN-Y Universal Cover Review

GEN-Y covers are known for their amazing designer print collection.  I have already reviewed their sized cover, and now I am at it again with a review of their Universal Cover, a dual sized cover designed to fit babies Size 1: 7-18 pounds and Size 2: 18-38 pounds.

Ease of Use ✩✩✩ Side snapping diapers can be harder to put on babies, and now that I have a chunky baby I have found them to be a little more difficult to use over that chub!  Thankfully, you can stagger the snaps to be open more over the chunky legs.  It is very easy to lay prefolds into the cover!

Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩ You will pay a premium (21.95-22.95) for these designer print covers.  I am going to assume much of the cost difference between this cover and others is that they do us designer print that, in themselves, so cost more per yard.  They are also made in the USA so labor costs more.

Performance ✩✩✩✩ I am always a little afraid to use cotton knit covers but these days they all seem to be made a little better than they used to be.  GEN-Y covers have never wicked (moisture moving from the inside of the diaper to the outside cotton knit which will get onto clothes)  We did have one very strange leak where pee went up the front and onto the kitchen floor (I was pretty shocked) but turns out he peed up and onto that PUL panel so none was absorbed.  I started not tucking the inserts into that panel and we no longer had leaks!

Fit ✩✩✩✩ I only tested the size 1 on my baby who is around 16 pounds now.  We started using it snapped down but quickly realized he needed it unsnapped.  The snaps for the rise are low (most likely because higher rise snaps would ruin the flow of the patterns) and so there will be a fold near the crotch and where the leg openings are.  I didn’t get leaks from this but it should be noted that I would suspect that might be a possibility.  It fits great over fitteds but I still preferred to use it with the Sbish flats.

Size Rise Legs Waist Est. Weight Ranges
Small 13 – 16 5 – 10 11 – 18 6 – 18 lbs.
Large 16 – 19 7 – 14 14 – 23 18 – 38 lbs.

Overall- GEN-Y has a following because their covers are so darn cute!  The Universal gives you a little more bang for your buck than their sized cover.  You will get more use out of it and can use it a few more ways.  I like that there is the possibility to snap down some of the “poof” if the inserts are trim as well.

Where to Buy: GEN-Y.com and select retailers

Happy Hempy and Happy Heiny’s One Size Cover Review

Happy Hempy and Happy Heiny’s One Size Cover Review

Happy Heiny’s sent over a few of their products to try.  I have already reviewed their new and improved One Size and their Mini One Size in my newborn diaper review.  This time I am reviewing the Happy Hempy and the One Size Cover.

Ease of Use  ✩✩✩ Fitteds and covers together definitely take longer to put on a baby than any pocket or all-in-one.  The reason is pretty obvious, you have 2 items to put on versus one.  That being said, these took me a little longer than other varieties.  I had to be very careful when putting the Happy Hempy on because if you didn’t make it tight enough there could be leaks from the front.  The fitted also needs to be stuffed, either before you put it on your baby or when you get it out of the dryer.  It also needs to be unstuffed before you wash it.  This all adds time to the diaper changing process.  You also need to affix the laundry tabs for both the Happy Hempy and the OS cover before tossing it in the pail.

Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩ The Hempy is 18.95 and the cover runs 14.95.  I would say both are a little more than most products in their same category but not by much.  The Hempy is worth the investment for that heavy wetter though!

Performance ✩✩✩✩ Even though this diaper can be a pita to get on and off, it held up very well overnight.  I do like the stay dry aspect because there are very few fitteds that have this.  I didn’t have any leaks with the diaper.  For my review I used the Hemp Stuffin insert.

Fit✩✩✩✩ This diaper combination is very bulky, at least on my little diaper tester.  I’m sure for those babies and toddlers who are in need of a serious night time solution would benefit from this combo.  If you baby doesn’t need a mega night time combo you might want to find a different fitted to use with the HH cover, since the cover doesn’t add any bulk and it is a good cover.

Overall- The best feature of the Happy Hempy is definitely the stay dry lining and the many layers of hemp. The combo of the fitted and the cover worked great for us but is bulkier than I prefer so it is relegated to nights.  The velcro still gave me chains even using the directed “behind the diaper” closing system.

Where to buy: Kelly’s Closet

Happy Heiny’s sent over a few examples of their products including the Happy Hempy and Happy Heiny’s One Size Cover.  No other compensation was received and all opinions are 100% my own.
