Incredibum Bamboo Cloth Diaper Video and Review

The Incredibum brand of diapers was a new one to me. That might be because it was only released in October 2011. The Incredibum is what I consider a “snap-in-one” meaning it is a one time use diaper but instead of it being an All-in-One with layers attached, the layers snap in and are customizable. The soaker pads are made from bamboo with cotton and a small bit of polyester. You can find my review below and watch my video demonstration above.
Ease of Use ✩✩ The Incredibum is not the most complicated diaper I have ever used but it does have a number of size adjustments on the rise, ways to adjust the soaker, and many snaps per tab that give it a pretty high learning curve. There are 4 snaps per tab, but you don’t have to snap them all. In some cases you might not have to do the hip snap so you are down to 2-3. I also had to get used to the position of the snaps on the tab. They aren’t in a place I am used to and would often forget one and have to go back. That only takes an extra few seconds, but it can be kinda annoying when you have an impatient baby. The soakers confused me at first too, and I will admit to still not understanding all of the options. The bamboo soaker snaps into the diaper with 2 snaps on the front and you can snap the other side into the back. You also have an optional snap in booster that snaps in the front. OR you can put this booster in alone when the diaper is set to the smallest setting.
Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩✩ The diaper retails for 16.85 and can be found at a few retailers. I like that the material is mostly natural fibers (67% bamboo, 23% cotton, and 11% polyester. It is One Size fits most but I have not tried it with a smaller baby so I can’t say if it fits well on an infant or not. It does fit both my 15 month old and my 3 year old on the middle rise snap. It is slightly less than most One Size pocket diapers.
Performance ✩✩✩✩✩ I tested this diaper in every scenario and it passed. Days were no problem, nights with the booster and main insert were also successful (even with my 3 year old, who has accidents at night), and naps weren’t an issue with just the main insert. This was a good alternative for a fitted and cover at night for us because it is a natural fiber, which in my world, is better. I like natural fibers versus synthetic stay dry fabrics because I feel they give less chances of leaking.
Fit ✩✩✩✩ The diaper fit Everett fine and performed well. I was happy with the absorbency but it just looked a tad bit funny on. I wouldn’t say this is the prettiest diaper ever since there is some gaping in the rise due to only having a rise snap on each side. The diaper fit around his legs and waist well.
Overall: The snaps on the rise and tabs are all white- I prefer the snaps to match or coordinate in a fun way somehow. White snaps aren’t a deal breaker for me but might be for someone. This style of diaper is a favorite for many people. I’m still a pocket girl at heart but it certainly worked well, was absorbent enough, and has a lot of options to it, and is pretty affordable.

Grasshopper Diapers Quick Dry Bamboo AIO Giveaway (9/19)

One of my favorite things about Mondays is getting to give a lucky DDL reader a new cloth diaper!

About Grasshopper Diapers:

My name is Lisa and I founded Grasshopper Diapers in the spring of 2008 after nearly three years of cloth diapering and sewing diapers. To the amusement of many of our friends (who thought that cloth diapers meant pins and leaky plastic pants), my husband and I decided to use cloth diapers before our first child was born. At the time, our motivation was to lessen the environmental impact of using diapers. As time went by, we learned more about the health benefits of cloth diapering and became grateful that we used cloth from the start.

I started sewing cloth diapers when our little one was just a few months old. I hadn’t planned to sew diapers, but as I tried more and more diapers I became increasingly frustrated – I couldn’t find a diaper that was trim and absorbent and (most importantly!) kept messes IN the diaper. Having sewn for years I thought that I could come up with something better, and it wouldn’t take much time. More than two years later, after countless hours of revising patterns and sewing prototypes, I had a diaper I was truly happy with. Over that time my goals had evolved: containing messes was still critical, but I also became focused on using sustainable and organic fabrics and ensuring that my diapers washed up easily and dried quickly whether in the dryer or on the clothesline. As our baby grew into a toddler, the convenience of all-in-one diapers became even more appealing (most toddlers are eager to get going again after a diaper change and aren’t too keen to wait while you put a separate cover over their diaper!) and because parents spend a lot of time changing diapers, I wanted my diapers to be colorful and fun.

What started as a desire to make the best diapers for my own child has become a passion to share my diapers so that other babies and parents can enjoy easy to use, natural, fabulous fit, environmentally responsible diapers.

We live near Toronto and are proud to make our diapers in Canada.

The Quick Dry AIO features the Roll-up Snap which gives you the option of tightly containing the mess inside of your dirty diaper for the road home.  Even when you use a wetbag this is a handy feature.  When going on long day trips you need to maximize the space in your wet bag to hold lots of diapers!

You can see the Roll-up Snap in action and learn more about the Grasshopper Quick Dry AIO by reading my review and watching the video.

The Retirement of the “Daddy Check-List”

6 months ago I was petrified of my husband changing our cloth diapers.  No matter how many lessons I gave him before the baby arrived he seemed clueless.  ”This is how you snappi the prefold” as I demonstrated on Mr. Teddy Bear.  A teddy and a baby are not exactly similar.  My husband was not happy with my decision to use prefolds until our Bum Genius 3.0 One Size pockets fit.  ”Why do you put the prefold on, and then a cover?  Isn’t that twice the work?  Can’t we just use the Bum Genius now?”  Hah I wish.  In my extensive research, most parents agreed that the Bum Genius didn’t fit well without leakage issues until the baby reached 11-13 pounds.  I wasn’t planning on squirting one out that big so I bought prefolds in the meantime.

Surprisingly, my husband did change our son.  He even used a snappi and prefold.  But, as soon as the Bum Genius fit, this is what he reached for.  Well, this created a new set of problems.  Anyone who has used them understands there are a few steps when taking them off.  First, you need to attach the velcro tabs to their laundry tabs to prevent a diaper chain when you wash.  Second, you need to remove the insert before placing it in the pail.  You could remove it as you wash but that is not my style.  There were other things he was doing that weren’t making my life easier.  Early on I was not using cloth wipes.  For some reason my husband would always leave the wipes lid open.  I would go in to change our son and half of the wipes were bone dry. Disposable wipes caused other issues for my husband, who could not seem to throw them in the trash, instead, they ended up in the wet bag and consequently were washed.  The most annoying thing he did was let the velcro tabs fall into the poop.  That was a pain to get poop out of velcro.  After almost going hoarse from reminding him of these points, I made this sign:

100_1621

This sign hung above the changing table, to remind my hsband of the “do’s” and “don’ts” of using cloth diapers.

100_1622

Where the Daddy Check List Hangs.  See my baskets full of fresh fluff laundry?

100_1623

The removal of said list.

100_1624

The throwing away of list.  *** Except after this photo op I remembered to recycle it heh***

So there ya have it folks!  My husband is officially trained, and no longer needs the Daddy Check List!  I need to make him a Cloth Diapering Degree.  He does not stuff pockets or do laundry, but he knows how to use snap diapers, velcro diapers, pockets, AIOs, prefolds with covers, “S” hook diapers, and how to tell a night time diaper apart from a day time diaper.  He still has his moments (fitteds still confuse him) but I love him for trying!!!  So congrats Daddy!  You have graduated Cloth Diaper School with Honors!

A Well Meaning Husband

A Well Meaning Husband

Yesterday morning it was my turn to sleep in.  Hallelujah!  This meant my husband got to do the first diaper change of the day.  Well, I had very few diapers to choose from that were clean.  There was a load of clean, dry diapers in the dryer… which is in the basement.  I believe the choices available for my husband were fitteds, g diapers, gro baby, and a straggling pocket.  He chose a Piddle Poddles fitted.

A bit after this change my husband brings my son in to my bed for me to nurse him.  This is how this conversation went.

“He is wearing a fitted.  He needs a cover.  This isn’t waterproof.”

“Oh, ok.  He is hungry.”

“I will feed him when he has a cover on, I don’t want pee to leak through in my bed or on me.”

Shortly after: Husband enters.

“Here.”

“This isn’t a waterproof cover.”

“What do you mean, it is a cover.  There are now two layers of fabric.”

“Yes, but this is a G Diaper cover, not a waterproof cover.  Go get a Gro baby and just use that as a cover.”

He was able to find a gro baby and put it on our son.  I don’t actually own “covers”.  I use fitteds coverless around the house for when I want my son’s junk to be able to breathe.

I am lucky enough to have a husband who supports my cloth diapering addiction, in practice and in the financial department as well.  Sometimes, we have “misunderstandings” such as these, where I suggest a specific diaper be used, and he has no clue what I am talking about.  Or, I don’t request a particular diaper and he picks one that won’t work for the situation at hand.  At least he knows which diapers are “nighttime” diapers (the thick ones heh) and which ones to use during the day (most of the time.)  I have heard stories from other moms whose husbands refuse to change a cloth diaper, so I consider myself pretty lucky.  Thanks hubby!

P.S.

I was able to sleep in to 10:30.  I was a happy mama!

Diapering Survey.

If you have a spare moment, would you participate in this survey?  It is meant to find out what types of diapers parents are using and why.  It isn’t just for cloth mamas, it asks questions about disposables as well.  It took me 2 minutes.

Diaper Survey

Thanks in advance for taking a moment to help this mama and her study out. I hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. I already have the sunburn to prove how much fun I have been having!

Gro Baby Diaper Review: Update.

Gro Baby Diaper Review: Update.

A while back I posted a video review of Gro Baby diapers, which can be seen or read here: Gro Baby Video Review,  or watch a video comparison of Gro Baby and G Diapers here: Comparison Video.

I thought now that I have had some more time to use them diapers I would post an update about how I like/ dislike them.

When I made the video my son had yet to have a BM in them.  Since that time he has been able to solve that!  I have had absolutely no poopy leaks with these diapers.  My son is Exclusively Breastfed, so his poop is very runny.  This means it will not just stay on the soaker pad.  I do have to change the shell, but this is not a drawback.

Overnight:  I have also used them overnight with a booster.  They did wonderfully.  My son wears his nighttime diapers 10-12 hours.  In the mornings when we have used one there is no wet back or any leaks.

Use:  I have to say, these do not have the ease of an AIO, Pocket, or disposable diaper.  There are more steps to use them.  I have used these while on the go to simplify my diaper bag.  If you have a wiggly baby, they can make your diaper changing a little harder.  My suggestion:  If you switch between 2 shells, have one shell already put together with the soaker.  This will make it a one step process.

Durability:  After many, many washes, I am pleased with the way they have held up.  The soft “stickyable” area on top has gotten fuzzier, but that is something I expected.

Overall:  I am still reaching for my gro baby diapers for going out of town and for trips.  At home, I still prefer my BG AIO Organic with snaps.  I have gotten compliments of my diapers when people have seen them.  I do love the colors and I can’t wait until the Vanilla comes out.  You can check out their website here: Natural Baby Co.

Cloth Diaper Frustration!!!

This morning I was woken up by my son (at 6:30, sweet!) and found him laying in his crib with a soaking wet back.  How long was he like this?  I have no clue!  There have been other instances this week where my diapers have repelled.  I stripped them when I came home from Texas and ran tons of hot and cold rinses.  They are still repelling.

Now to my stink issues.  My diapers have a terrible ammonia smell.  When they come out of the dryer they smell clean, but once peed in they have a slight odor.  When they sit in my pail for a few hours they become terrible.  When I open the pail to add more a wall of ammonia hits your nose!   If they get worse it could cause a burn on his skin so I have to take care of this problem now.

Here are my options: Strip again.  Use bac-out for ammonia (which I have used twice but it doesn’t seem to be helping).  Strip yet again…. Use bleach.  I don’t want to use bleach but it will probably kill the ammonia.  I could also try vinegar, another “no no” in the cloth diaper world.  I am at a loss.  I am not giving up…. just frustrated with what is happening.

This situation makes me want to give up using Bum Genius pockets and only use the Organic AIO Bum Genius or any other organic cotton diaper.  The suedecloth and microfleece liners in pocket diapers tend to repel more.  I also want to start using wool covers at night.  When I was pregnant and planning my “stash” I bought a small wool cover which I intended to use for nights.  I had read how amazing wool is: it is breathable, antibacterial, doesn’t need to be washed but every 2 weeks, and bullet proof for night time diapers.  SOLD.  Alas, I found the pocket love and never even tried my cover before it was too small.  I swear, very soon I am going to buy one wool cover and try it at night.  Who knows, I may fall in love!

For now my washer is going to be running for a whole day while I try to rinse my troubles away.

Texas water is not friendly to my diapers…

To make this story make sense I should tell you that I have done one wash for my cloth diapers since being here in Texas.  Last night I woke to my son having a wet back.  Argh.   I changed him and put him back in bed with me.  I woke up a few hours later and he had another wet back.  Seriously?  I changed him again, his outfit, and had to sleep on a corner of the bed to avoid the 2 wet spots that were now in the bed.  FUN!

We woke for good at 5:30 am, which is just right since in NY we wake at 6:30 am.  I realize that of course, my diapers were repelling.  I had no more clean G Diaper covers, and all of my “regular” cloth diapers were dirty.

My son is now wearing disposables.  I feel so defeated.  He has worn 4 today.  We were out all day and I couldn’t wash.  I know I have to strip my diapers.  I have no clue how I should wash them here.  So I think I am going to wash them and run a few extra rinses but wait until I get home to truly strip them.  So once I wash all of my g diaper covers tomorrow I will go back to those.  And if I run out of those I must use disposables.  :(   I would have really been in trouble had my mother-in-law now brought the diapers she had at her house with her here to Texas.  I was like “ah, she is wasting her time…. she doesn’t need to bring those.”  But now I am secretly thankful.

Cloth diapers, although wonderful, great for the environment, and soft for your baby’s bum, are also a puzzle.  If you have ever gone on a cloth diapering forum the most popular topic is washing diapers.  Every person has a different method.  This is due to the fact that different areas have different water types, people have different types of washers, and they also use different detergents.  Apparently, my wash method does not jive with Texas water.  We leave on Saturday so I am going to tough it out.  I really, really wanted to prove to myself I was 100% cloth but apparently it wasn’t meant to be.  I am still very proud of the commitment I have made and the time I spend making cloth work for our family.  I hope this is a lesson to everyone that even though cloth can be done on vacation, sometimes it just isn’t meant to me.

My son’s butt looks so funny without all of the extra fluff.  So sad :(

Our Trip So Far

I am stealing a minute at a relative’s house here in San Antonio to post an update.  I am also typing one handed since my son is sleeping in my arm.  I already posted about some things.  This is my first plane trip with cloth diapers.  It is going well except that Fletcher has had an upset tummy.  Since I a relying on 2 kinds of diapers that rely on changing out the inside and leaving a shell (G Diapers and Gro Baby) it has been tougher than I expected.  I didn’t think I would have to change the shells as often as I have since he is pooping every couple of changes.

We bought Fletcher a real cowboy hat.  We are going to take pictures of him in front of the Alamo.  The rest of the trip is going to be some touristy stuff.  Family stuff.  And lots of mexican food.  When I get time I will have to update on all of the crazy places I have had to nurse in public at.  I am now a pro.
