Intro to Cloth Diapers: What is a Snap-in-One?

This post is part of my on-going Introduction to Cloth Diapers series.  If you have missed an installment you can view them all: Intro to Cloth Diapers.

I first heard the term “Snap-in-One” when I stumbled upon the itti bitti line of diapers from Australia a year ago.  Now they are available in the US, but at that time this was a diaper no one had ever heard of here.  Still, the designation was fitting to not only their cloth diaper, but others.  I thought it only fair to distinguish between a true sewn in All-in-One and the Snap-in-Ones.

A Snap-in-One is a cloth diaper that functions like an All-in-One for wash and wear, but the absorbent soaker can be anpped into the diaper or removed if desired. It can potentially be customized with different layer combinations.

A Snap-in-One is sounds like an All-in-Two since many of those have snap in soakers, but AI2‘s are only intended to be used once.  SIO layers are usually fabric under the snapping soakers and these would get wet when the soaker was wet.  Snap-in-One’s can be sized or one size depending on the brand.

Pros:

  • Dries faster than most sewn in AIO‘s.
  • Potential for custom layer configurations depending on the manufacturer’s options.
  • You don’t need to remove the soakers to wash.
  • Nothing to stuff or unstuff.

Cons:

  • The diaper doesn’t have one smooth layer next to the baby’s skin.
  • Certain soakers may bunch or wrinkle up.
  • Can only customize with soakers made by the company (if you want them to snap in).

Yes, a Snap-in-One is an All-in-One, but a different variety.  On the Cloth Diaper Finder, my new database, this is a search parameter of its own.  In the future I may be changing this but for now this is the case.

Bottombumpers One Size Review

The Bottombumpers One Size was just released on September 1, but I was fortunate enough to be a tester.  I have had this diaper for a few months.  There were no changes to the final diaper other than rounding out the tab corners.

Ease of Use ✩✩✩✩ The adjustment for the Bottombumpers One Size is unique because the snap down rise is inside of the diaper at the back, versus on the front on the outside like many snap down rise diapers.  The principle is the same, however, and is easy to snap down.  The two layer soaker snaps in at the back as well.  You do not need to unsnap it to wash unless you want.  I have been leaving it snapped and it stays attached and has caused no damage.  There are a total of 4 snaps to affix when putting the diaper on the baby, and they are on the side.  There are many choices since it is a one size diaper, but it should be fairly intuitive after a few times using it.

Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩✩ I would be more than happy to pay 22.95 for this diaper.  With organic cotton, bamboo velour, one size, and being made in the US, that is more than a fair price.  Of course you can find cheaper diapers, but often you get what you pay for.

Performance ✩✩✩✩ I used this diaper for day times and naps.  You have to be careful when putting the diaper on the baby to tuck in the cotton around the elastic.  The elastic is not encased, similar to the BG Organic AIO (Elementals) so when you wash it rolls out and scrunches up.  To avoid any leaks keep that in mind.  The soaker was adequate for us for both day and nite.  I did find when my son  slept on his side he occasionally got a leak, not a major leak, it was a small spot of wetness.  I imagine this is just because it is a side snapping diaper.

Fit ✩✩✩✩ I used the diaper on the third snap setting, so I have one last snap left for him.  There is plenty of room for him waist wise as well.  It fits very, very trim on his and looks nice and sleek thanks to the unique rise adjustment.  It is definitely a good diaper for under those jeans!  When you use smaller snap settings you will have to fold the soaker for it to fit inside the diaper, but at his size this wasn’t needed.

Overall- I love the way this diaper looks and fits.  It dries relatively quickly, within one dryer cycle.  If you air dried it it will take longer than a pocket with a microfiber insert since it is cotton and bamboo.

All together

All together

I added a few other odds and ends, including some photographs of babies wearing the embroidered “Ellen” diapers and washing instructions from Kelly’s Closet.  In case you are wondering, the Rumparooz, Fuzzibunz, and Bottombumpers diapers were sent free of charge for the package. I paid out of pocket for the Zany Zebra (Which I wasn’t even supposed to get but there was a mixup so I felt obligated to pay, long story, and why I have 2 cupcake diapers for Ellen’s niece, Eva) and the embroidery on the covers which were used for the video shoot.  The covers themselves were donated by Kelly’s Closet (5 of them).  Kim from Rockin’ Green gave me the sample but she had no idea it would end up in the package.  I bought the Wiggly Gigglers (in case you are wondering, I made a Shake Weight for Babies video to send to Ellen for laughs)

As suggested by the title, this is my last effort for Operation Fluffy.  I have put a lot of time, effort, and money into the operation.  If this doesn’t work, nothing will.  This package is literally being handed to Ellen Degeneres by someone in her staff.  Let’s just say I have a friend, who has a friend, who has a friend that works at the show.  ’Nuff said.

I want to thank everyone who has been involved in Operation Fluffy. It has been a fun ride!  A special thanks to the generous companies who sent in items for the video and the package! And a thank you to Jillian’s Drawers who allowed me to invade their community room to film the video (which is being edited still, it will be in the package.) A VERY special thank you to the moms and dads who brought their babies to be filmed in the video!  I can’t wait to share it with you all.  If these adorable diapers don’t convince her how cool cloth is, nothing will.

Big Plans for #operationfluffy

If you listened to me last Sunday on the Cloth Diapers Rock radio show from The Feminist Breeder then you know part of what is coming up for #operationfluffy.  If you didn’t listen, you should anyway just to hear Gina and I blab about cloth diapers etc.

ellen3June 8 I will be filming an awesome video of babies dancing in embroidered cloth diaper covers (donated by Kelly’s Closet!) with the phrase “Cloth. Dance. Ellen.” on the butt.  The diapers are being embroidered by Bottombumpers.  Mandi from Jillian’s Drawers is letting me invade her community room which is housed in her brand new store in Ithaca, NY.  I will be filming the babies there.  Where am I getting all of these babies?  I have asked some local residents in Ithaca to let me borrow their children.  My own son will be dancing as well!

I have something even more awesome for the video planned that is sure to make Ellen smile.  It involves a Shake Weight and babies.  You will have to wait and see if I can pull that off!

Once the video is finished I am sending it to her along with some custom embroidered diapers.  She is getting a Bottombumpers AIO with “Cloth. Dance. Ellen.” on the butt and her niece, Eva, is getting her own custom diaper with an appliqued cupcake and her name on the back.  I will also be including a few other brands of diapers in the box to show her how amazing modern cloth diapers are.

I am really excited about what is coming up.  Even if we don’t get the diapers or the video on her show, rest assured it will get some traffic on YouTube.  And any exposure for cloth diapers is great!
