I’m not a Golden Girls Super Fan but the show has more than a special place in my heart. As a kid it was something I watched and I continued to watch it in re-runs throughout my entire life. Other shows have come and gone but anytime I need a TV fix somehow The Golden Girls is on. I switch over almost every time. In college I even managed to write an entire paper on the show.
Whenever I thought of Florida the style of the Golden Girls home and their lifestyle would come to mind. It didn’t matter than over a decade had passed since the show was filmed. To me, Florida and The Golden Girls go hand and hand.
Pastels, Mauve, Banana Leaves, Big Ceramics, Asian Inspired Art, Silk Plants, and RATTAN RATTAN RATTAN. This is how I imagined every home in Floriday or at least Miami, was decorated.
I’m not much for “beach” themed homes at all. I have a clean and modern. retro inspired palate. Still, I wanted our guests to feel like they were in Florida when they came to visit. Naturally I decided that our guestroom had to be decorated in the style of the Golden Girls. Once my husband signed off on the idea I got to work!
Other than thrifted 1990’s decor I knew I needed something to pay tribute to my favorite ladies. I decided to make my own Subway Art with selected quotes- one per Golden Girl- to hang proudly. To personalize them I designed a brush set in Photoshop of each lady’s head. Sophia Petrillo, Rose Nylund, Dorothy Zbornack, and even dear old Blanche Devereaux.

This is how they look on my walls after being framed. I found $3.00 Gold Frames from Big Lots, bought matting for 25% off at Joanns, and printed them slightly larger than 8×10 (not on purpose) at the UPS Store for $3.21 total. Their color paper prints are great. My only advice would be to put a second piece of paper behind them since the paper is translucent and might pick up the color of your frame backing.
The rest of the room is inspired by the Golden Girls and their love of floral patterns and pastels. I still have several items left to find including a rattan or creme/gold wooden dresser. I also need to re-upholster the cushions for the rattan chair I found at a thrift store. I’d also like a 5×7 or larger rug but I’m waiting to see what lovely dresser I find first before buying that. I chose a pinkish/flesh tone color for the walls called “Flan” by Sherwin Williams. Wallpaper would have been truer to decor but I wasn’t about to mess with that! I’m also stalking Ebay and Amazon for the Golden Girls: 25th Anniversary Complete Collection but I don’t think I’m going to find one in my budget for a while.
Once the room is complete I’ll post more details and information about my finds. You can follow my Golden Girls Guest Room board on Pinterest to keep up with the inspiration.
