GEN-Y Universal Cover Review

GEN-Y Universal

Update: A newer version of the Universal Cover has been released since this review.
GEN-Y covers are known for their amazing designer print collection.  I have already reviewed their sized cover, and now I am at it again with a review of their Universal Cover, a dual sized cover designed to fit babies Size 1: 7-18 pounds and Size 2: 18-38 pounds.

Ease of Use ✩✩✩ Side snapping diapers can be harder to put on babies, and now that I have a chunky baby I have found them to be a little more difficult to use over that chub!  Thankfully, you can stagger the snaps to be open more over the chunky legs.  It is very easy to lay prefolds into the cover!

Bang for the Buck ✩✩✩ You will pay a premium (21.95-22.95) for these designer print covers.  I am going to assume much of the cost difference between this cover and others is that they do us designer print that, in themselves, so cost more per yard.  They are also made in the USA so labor costs more.

Performance ✩✩✩✩ I am always a little afraid to use cotton knit covers but these days they all seem to be made a little better than they used to be.  GEN-Y covers have never wicked (moisture moving from the inside of the diaper to the outside cotton knit which will get onto clothes)  We did have one very strange leak where pee went up the front and onto the kitchen floor (I was pretty shocked) but turns out he peed up and onto that PUL panel so none was absorbed.  I started not tucking the inserts into that panel and we no longer had leaks!

Fit ✩✩✩✩ I only tested the size 1 on my baby who is around 16 pounds now.  We started using it snapped down but quickly realized he needed it unsnapped.  The snaps for the rise are low (most likely because higher rise snaps would ruin the flow of the patterns) and so there will be a fold near the crotch and where the leg openings are.  I didn’t get leaks from this but it should be noted that I would suspect that might be a possibility.  It fits great over fitteds but I still preferred to use it with the Sbish flats.

Size Rise Legs Waist Est. Weight Ranges
Small 13 – 16 5 – 10 11 – 18 6 – 18 lbs.
Large 16 – 19 7 – 14 14 – 23 18 – 38 lbs.

Overall- GEN-Y has a following because their covers are so darn cute!  The Universal gives you a little more bang for your buck than their sized cover.  You will get more use out of it and can use it a few more ways.  I like that there is the possibility to snap down some of the “poof” if the inserts are trim as well.

A GEN-Y Universal Cover was sent for the purposes of the review.  No other compensation was received and all opinions are 100% genuine and my own.
