#FlatsChallenge: How to Make a Camp Style Washer Instructional Video

I am slowly getting information together for participants.  You can see in this video how easy it is to make a camp style washer out of a 5 Gallon Bucket and plunger.  Total cost for the basic version-0.00-10.00.  Cost for the “luxury” version-10.00-20.00.

You could also purchase the Mobile Washer (Hand Operated Washing Machine) in lieu of a plunger with holes.  As I quickly learned, a plunger with no holes creates a lot of resistance in the water and makes this method far more labor intensive.  If you want tone arms, don’t drill holes!

      5-8. 8 or more make it very hard. 8 flats plus about 2-3 covers

    Great idea! I add some vinegar to the final rinse, that takes the soap out and leaves the laundry fresh (it only smells like vinegar when it’s still wet).

    Hello Kim, I’m really interested in cloth diapering for the first time. I’m expecting my second child on 7/4/13 so I’m really researching the pros and cons of CDing. Thank you so much for video. One of the main issues against CD was the lack of washer in our apartment but this is awesome. However, I do have a concern. I read about yeast infections in diapers and using extremely hot water, would washing diapers in this manner help prevent the infections or can you suggest a step I should take to prevent them? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you, LQ.

    I wonder if you could get one of those wringer things they use for shammi’s at the car wash…that’d help you get the water out.

    Very. Stupid. Question. I understand how a camp bucket washer is a great alternative for people who do not have a washer and dryer.

    But…if nobody in your household has any communicable diseases (such as Hep) is here any reason you could not wash your diapers as a separate load in your regular washer?

    You say you do this for 30 minutes every day — you must have amazing triceps!
