Fabric Softeners are a well known “no-no” in the world of cloth diapering.  The way softeners work, they coat the fabric with their yummy soft goodness.  This feels nice on your sheets and towels, but on a diaper it creates a barrier!  There are many ways to try and soften your diapers.  Many people use wool dryer balls to beat the living daylights out of their diapers during their drying cycle.  My neighbors wouldn’t care to hear that.  Trust me, I tried.  So how do you soften your fluffies?

Cloth mamas, meet Ecover!  If you haven’t already heard of it, then you must know how amazing this product is.  First, the details.  Ecover is a natural fabric softener that uses plant and mineral based ingredients.  Their fragrance is natural, they do not test on animals, the packaging is recyclable, and it is made in an ecologically sound plant.

Here is the good, and bad news.  Good:  You can use Ecover on your inserts, prefolds, fitteds, and wipes.  Bad: You are not supposed to use Ecover on your PUL.  Truth:  I do anyway.  It is warned against by the many cloth diapering websites out there.  In my personal experience, I have not had any issues.  I only use Ecover once every three washes.  The bottle is labeled for High Efficiency washers, which use less water, but I use a top loader.  I put in one capful which has proven to be plenty, and effective.  I also use it on my clothes, works great!

Results:  My flannel wipes were almost crunchy, and now they are silky smooth.  My Goodmama and Piddle Poddles are squishy, my mocrofiber inserts no longer feel “sticky” on my hands, and my prefolds are good as new.  Even the suedecloth and fleece liners of my pocket diapers are softer, with no repelling issues after using Ecover. Bonus: It has a very light and pleasant scent.

The cost: less than 5.00 for 32 0z.  I found mine at a local organic food and vitamin store.  Many stores like Whole Foods sell it, or you can easily find it online.  Mine was even on sale for  20% off!

I am so glad I began using this now that I am adding more Bamboo and Hemp into my stash.  If you are strictly a Pocket user, Ecover isn’t needed.  If you have crunchy diapers, I strongly suggest trying Ecover!  They also make tons of other natural cleaners for your home as well.  Visit their site to learn more!
