Fluffy Mama of the Week- Glorimar from Zabi Baby and Giveaway

Fluffy Mama of the Week- Glorimar from Zabi Baby and Giveaway

I am resurrecting Fluffy Mama of the Week and the first post in almost a year is a special one!  I contacted Glorimar Rosa who I had heard collected vintage diapers.  I was dying to learn more about her collection.  On top of collecting vintage cloth diapers she has also been cloth diapering for 15 years!  She has seen it all!
Tell me about yourself: My name is Glorimar Rosa. I am 38 years old and the mother of 6 kids, 5 here with me one (Zabi) in heaven with God. I am a pastry chef by profession, I went to culinary school in Puerto Rico and learned sugarcraft in England with the masters. I can make beautiful flowers in sugar and small sculptures. I did this for many years in Puerto Rico.  My cakes were featured in several wedding magazines.

I live in California now with my husband and 5 kids. I started Zabi Baby after my son Zabiullah passed away shortly after he reached 2 months of age. Sewing diapers helped me through my grieving process and kept his name very alive. We see his sweet name here every day at all times. Zabi Baby is a tribute to our little angel. We miss you Zabi.

How long have you been cloth diapering? – I have been cloth diapering for over 15 years. My eldest son Cesar used cloth.

What made you decide to start? – You know…I don’t remember. I think it have a lot to do with Mothering Magazine. I remember calling the toll free numbers and requesting catalogs, no websites back then (not that I can remember and I certainly did not have internet). I used to order my diapers at Babybunz and Babyworks. I was familiar with Nikky covers. Locally I could get Gerber diapers and covers. Gerber had a line of nylon covers with velcro that was pretty decent. Lots of pvc or vinyl was available.

What was your first purchase and why? – A few packages of Gerber diaper covers and prefolds. Those were available at department stores locally. It was basically my only option, till I decided to see what those companies that advertised in Mothering had to offer.

When and how did you begin collecting vintage cloth diapers? – 2 years back! My mother had something to do with this. I come from a family who use cloth diapers and support the idea a lot. My mom and auntie used to tell me how they washed and how they IRONED their prefolds and flats so they look super cute and nice. She told me about the Curity 21×40 that she used with pins. That triggered aninterest in me to find those diapers. I don’t use them, I just stare at them LOL.

Vintage Diapers and pins

How do you find your diapers? Online? Sales?

My vintage diapers? I find those on Ebay and have a team of friends looking in garage sales or state auctions. If you have some and are willing to sell contact me!!
The diapers I use with my daughter Tasneem I buy online as well. I use different kinds. My all time favorites are Nikky covers and I pair those with bamboo prefolds. This combination is the one we use the most at home. I use also Kiwi Pie fitteds, Bagshot Row Bamboo and Sticky Peas for the cute factor with GAD covers. Weehuggers give me a super trim fit to go out and it always open a conversation with a mama. I have seen mamas staring at them LOL. For nap time and night time I use Little Comfort Nappies. I am fan of natural fibers and use those exclusively, except for the Little Comfort that contains a few layers of microfleece but perfectly balanced to be an absorbent fitted with stay dry benefits. I am ok with one size diapers but never one size covers. I like my covers to be sized, or at least 2 sizes like Weehuggers.

What is your opinion of how diapers have been made easier over the years?
Cloth diapering has come a long way!! 15 years back we had no snappis, so pins were the only option unless you trifolded your diaper inside a wrap. Not many exciting fabrics. Fitteds and all in ones were not as trim as they are right now. Back when I started there was flannel, flannel/terry combo and cotton twill or birdseye prefolds and some of them with a horrible poly/rayon pad inside. Nikky covers have always been superbly made with the best materials on the market but besides those nylon and pvc were the materials more widely available back then. I remember a cover made of GoreTex fabric, that was supposed to be breathable. I wonder why other covers are not made of that fabric. I owned a few of those and they were nice. Aristocrats wool soakers were available too.

What is the most rewarding aspect of using cloth diapers?
Being able to say that my baby does not get a rash ever!
What has been the biggest challenge to your success at cloth diapering? - It was a challenge in Puerto Rico. I did not have a dryer and it rains a lot. I used to place the diapers to sun outside and then minutes later the black cloud came! Everybody had to run to pick them up and install a line indoors. There were times that we had to buy sposies because they were all wet. Indoor drying is not easy because of the level of humidity on the island. I don’t face that challenge here. No challenge at all right now. Cloth diapering is super easy!

Anything else (advice, etc)?
I advise mamas to buy different kinds of diapers to find out which one they like best. What works for me might not work for another mama. What I love might not be the favorite of another mama. Don’t buy all your cloth diapers at once at the beginning. I did that once and ended liking other things along the way as the baby was growing.

I hope you found this week’s Fluffy Mama to be extremely interesting and passionate!  It is amazing the changes seen in cloth diapering over the past 15 years!

Glorimar also wanted to do a giveaway for an embellished prefold from Zabi Baby.  The winner will choose from a selection she has in stock from her store, and she is throwing in a snappi too!

Rain or Shine Kids Sun Cover review and giveaway

Rain or Shine Kids Sun Cover review and giveaway

This review was written and performed by DDL contributor, Kristen.  Look for a coupon code and giveaway after the review!

I was given the opportunity to review the Rain or Shine Kids (RoSK) Sun Cover, which is an organic, lightweight cover that can be used in many situations to protect your baby (and you in some situations) from the sun’s harmful rays.  The RoSK sun cover claims to protect a UPF of 30+ but studies have shown that it can actually protect up to an UPF of 45+.

Sun protection for baby made easy in a 4 ounce single layer of breathable, organic cotton. UPF 30+ sun protection that will not wash out, the Sun Cover keeps baby comfortable by blocking harmful UV rays without adding warmth. Tie this airy lightweight cover on your babies stroller, infant carrier, or infant car seat and provide all day sun protection. Use with all your baby gear, visit the‘how to use‘ page for examples.

All Sun Covers are a 4 ounce layer of white fabric with a choice of four edging colors. The perfect sun protection for babies during the hot weather.

When I got the RoSK Sun Cover, I was pretty happy to begin using it as I loathe putting sunscreen on my girls.  Not only do I hate slathering them with chemicals or super expensive all natural sunscreens but I also hate being left with either greasy or white hands depending on the type of sunscreen I used.  Also, I hate the way sunscreens smell.  The RoSK Sun Cover was an exciting idea for me because it meant that I could take the kids out walking and while they would be covered by the canopy of the stroller, their legs and feet are usually exposed to the sun…so with the RoSK Sun Cover, I was able to tie it onto the stroller to protect their legs and feet instead.

photo-8The cover itself is a lightweight, white fabric.  It is lined with an outer edge of color (mine was orange, which is always a bonus in my book).  It didn’t seem to make my girls any hotter, which is definitely a plus in the hotter months.  The sun cover was large enough that when I had my girls facing each other in their Kolcraft Contours Tandem Stroller, it covered both of their legs.  It tied on easily to all three of my strollers.  I can also be used to attach to yourself when you are wearing your baby to protect their arms and legs from the sun’s rays.  Likewise, you can also use it as a nursing cover and since it is really lightweight, it would be less likely to make baby all hot and sweaty…  The site also suggests using it on a infant carrier and you can use it as a lightweight blanket for baby to play on as well since it is easy to clean, water resistant and the UPF will not wash away over time.

Overall, I think this is a great product.  Neither of my kids got sun burned during our extensive walks when we used it and it never seemed to make them any hotter.  My 7 month old even seemed to enjoy having it there as something to play with.  I love the idea of having something cover and protect them from the harmful UV rays while we take walks and it’s an added bonus that it ties on.

Buy it: If you want to buy one, since it is the end of summer the price has been reduced on their site to $30 (from $38) and the coupon code SUN25 will give my readers 25% off any product at www.roskbaby.com – which brings the cost of a Sun Cover with shipping in the US to $27.71. Smokin’ deal for an organic cotton sun protective product!

RoSK is also giving one lucky DDL reader a RoSK Sun Cover!

Winners!

I apologize for the lateness which I am posting winners and also for pulling them.  After my web redesign there are still some things that need fixing, including my comment numbering.  Pulling winners is a chore these days.  On top of that, my son broke my computer for a while, keeping it from screencapping.  I use screen caps for my randow.org draws.  The Best Bottoms winner was drawn before I knew that, and my computer shut down on me before hubby got home to see what in the world had happened, which closed my screen.  I don’t have a cap for that one.  The Thinkbaby I forgot my screencap was still broken and drew, then had to take a pic of it!  Fixed in time for the last one.

The Best Bottoms Winner was: Brandy R.

Thinkbaby Sunscreen: Ashley Poland

Thinkbaby Sunscreen: Congrats Ashley Poland!

Mother-Ease Sandy’s Fitted and Air Flow Cover Giveaway *closed*

Mother-Ease Sandy’s Fitted and Air Flow Cover Giveaway *closed*

I am excited to bring you another great cloth diaper giveaway, this time, a Sandy’s Fitted and Air Flow Cover from Mother-Ease!

About the Sandy’s Fitted:

Our Sandy’s™ cloth diapers come in two main sizes: Small (8-20 lbs.) and Large (20-35 lbs.) We also offer Newborn and Toddle-ease cloth diapers which offer a custom fit for newborns and toddlers.

These cloth diapers are made from our same soft stretchy terry cloth using the same quality of workmanship, but they have an extra layer of absorbent terry sewn to the inside of the diaper. The fit of the cloth diaper is slightly roomier. Elastic at the waist front and back as well as the leg openings, together with the snap closures at the sides create a clean pant-like look. A serged edge finishes the diaper. Our large Sandy’s™ cloth diaper is one of the most absorbent cloth diapers ever, and holds 15 oz. When used together with our Sandy’s™ Cloth Diaper Liners it makes an extravagant nighttime cloth diaper.

About the Air Flow Cover:

Finally! A leak-free cloth diaper cover that refuses to compromise breathability! We searched for over a year to find just the right fabric that would meet our quality standards. The fabric needed to be soft, durable and waterproof. The Air Flow™ Snap Cover, with adjustable snaps at the waist and leg openings has an air ventilation system between the snaps. This allows for maximum air circulation as baby moves, reducing the risk of bacteria by keeping the temperature inside the diaper down. And, unlike Velcro, the curious baby can’t undo them, so they stay on until you take them off.

The Air Flow™ cloth diaper cover is to be used with either the One Size™ cloth diapers or the Sandy’s™ cloth diapers to create a highly breathable, leakproof cloth diapering system.

Congrats Kimberley!

Mother-Ease is giving one lucky DDL reader a Sandy’s fitted and an Air Flow cover!

    Best Bottoms Giveaway (8/2) *closed*

    Best Bottom Features (taken from Nicki’s Diapers website)

    After years of experience, Nicki the owner of Nicki’s Diapers created a new diaper taking the pros of all the different diapering systems and eliminated the cons. This resulted in the Best cloth diaper system available – trimmest fitting and highly absorbent! To help reduce early confusion and that overwhelmed feeling when researching cloth diapers, the Best Bottom diapers has simplified cloth diapering while making one of the most economical systems. The Best Bottom one size diapering system is not a pocket diaper, not an all in one, not a fitted diaper and not a prefold system…it is the best of all types!

    insidelook2

    How Does The Best Bottom System Work:
    Simplify, simplify, simplify! Many may start researching cloth diapers, get overwhelmed and quit. Best Bottoms are YOUR solution! So easy to use yet comes with lots of options so you can get a customized system for your baby.
    1. Adjust front snaps to achieve the size needed.
    2. Snap insert into diaper.
    3. Put diaper on baby and go!
    4. When baby needs a diaper change snap out soiled insert and snap clean one in.
    5. Put diaper on baby and go AGAIN. The Best Bottom shell is wipe-able and can be used multiple times before washing but you may want to air dry between uses but it is not necessary.

    Nicki’s Diapers would like one very lucky DDL reader to win a Best Bottoms Cover and 3 Inserts.

    bumGenius! 4.0 Giveaway *closed*

    Granola BabiesHow many of you are DYING to try the new bumGenius! 4.0?  Me too!  So, Granola Babies wants to give one away to a very lucky DDL reader!

    Granola Babies is new to selling cloth diapers but they already sell some of the best cloth diaper brands out there!  Thirsties, bumgenius!, Kissaluvs, and Fuzzibunz to name a few!  They used to be “Slings I Love” and sold baby carriers.  Now they sell cloth diapers, baby carriers, natural toys, and things for mom!  I am kinda nuts for all of the baby carriers they sell.  It isn’t a secret I am coveting a Sakura Bloom silk sling, and they sell these.  They also sell some amazingly beautiful wraps like the Didymos!

    You probably already know all about the new bumGenius! 4.0 but here is a little info on it.

    Katydid One Size Giveaway *closed*

    ***I swear I published this post Monday but I got an email saying the link from Facebook wasn’t working.  I just got to a computer today and saw it didn’t post (or did and got deleted?)  I am republishing it.  If you did enter it before please enter on this post since the other is nowhere.  I have to have technical troubles while out of town with no internet where I am staying.  It is Murphy’s Law.***

    I was very excited that Franklin Goose contacted me to do a review and giveaway with them.   I first heard of them after their crazy promotion a few months back.  I, as well as a billion others, left product reviews and earned store credit.  I used the credit to buy a couple of newborn diapers and a drum set for my toddler.  I spent money as well, and ended up with great products!  The shipping was good considering what they were going through.  I had no urgent need for the items so I didn’t mind at all.  I plan on going back to buy some of the adorable clothing they sell.  I LOVE the simplicity of organic baby clothes.  They sell so many items I wish I could buy for both kids!

    This includes the Katydid One Size diaper.

    Key Features Include:

    * Micro-fleece inner layer
    * Patented front-opening pocket
    * Waterproof outer layer
    * Gentle elastic
    * One-size, fits babies from 8-35 lbs.
    * Quick and secure snap closures
    * Newborn side snaps (to prevent wing droop)
    * Wrap & snap feature
