Kissaluvs Marvel One Size Cover Review

I got a first peek of the Kissaluvs Marvel One Size Cover (and the Marvel AIO) at ABC Kids last September.  I was happy to see those new additions to the Kissaluvs lineup, among the other cool new products like the antibacterial pail liner and new Marvel fitted prints with a more gender neutral or boy theme.

The Kissaluvs Marvel One Size Cover is very much like most other one size covers.  The closure uses snaps and the rise is adjusted by snaps as well.  The best part of the cover has to be the great leg gussets, handy for those runny breastfeeding poops!

Ease of Use ✰✰✰✰ This is an extremely simple cover.  There is only one row of snaps and you only need to affix 4 snaps total for each change.  To adjust the size of the diaper you can snap the rise down using the three across snaps, which only takes a few seconds.  You won’t have to do that for every change.  The only possible thing complicating your diaper changes would be if you have a a squirmy baby or if you are working with prefolds.

Bang for the Buck ✰✰✰✰ The price point is very true to the competition like Blueberry, at 16.95.  Considering this should last 8 to 40 pounds, and knowing that covers generally have a long life if taken care of, it is a great deal!  It is a good deal more expensive than many sized covers, but the initial investment will be worth it if you continue to use them for the life span of your baby (or babies) in diapers.

Performance ✰✰✰✰✰ It is hard to find a cover that doesn’t work well (at least for me) and this was no exception.  No leaks, no blow outs, nothing but dry baby clothes.  I would be interested in seeing how well the gussets work to contain newborn poop, but my son has solid stools so I wasn’t able to test that.

Fit ✰✰✰✰ I really liked the elastic on this diaper, it had lots of give and was good and tight to keep leaks at bay.  The medium setting was a great fit for my son, so I know he has a while left in the cover before he outgrows it since there is one setting left for him.  We are getting to the point that he is on the unsnapped setting on some diapers, but not this one.  The cover didn’t leave any bright red marks, but light marks on the back.

Bella Bottoms Incredibellas One Size Review

One of the benefits of researching all of the cloth diapers made in the US and Canada was that I came across brands I was not familiar with.  Let’s face it: there are tons of diaper brands out there, big and small, and I don’t know them all!

Bella Bottoms, a brand of diapers made in Austin, TX, only recently added the Incredibellas One Size pockets diaper to their lineup.  This diaper has snap closures, a fold over and snap down rise adjustment, and pocket openings in the front and back so no unstuffing!

Ease of Use ✰✰✰✰ The Incredibellas sizing adjustment was very intuitive for me.  As shown in the video, the rise folds over on the top of the diaper, and snaps down.  Then  snaps facing the correct direction are exposed that you can use.  There are two settings of the fold over/ snap down rise, and the third setting is completely unfolded.  For every day use it is very easy to put on and take off.  There are a total of 4 snaps to affix, two on each tab.  When you are ready to take the diaper off you don’t even need to remove the insert because it agitates out in the wash.  You can stuff from the front or back of the diaper as well, the front opening is very wide and good for Daddy hands.

Bang for the Buck ✰✰✰✰✰ This diaper is a great deal!  The diaper sells for 15.00 on Bella Bottom’s website, but is currently on sale for 12.00!  This includes an insert and doubler.  This diaper has features often found on pricier diapers, such as an insert that agitates out.  The coordinating snap colors is another feature I loved on this diaper.

Performance ✰✰✰✰✰ I was very impressed by the Incredibellas.  It is obviously a WAHM made diaper when you look at it, judging my the styling and stitching.  That doesn’t mean it doesn’t perform well (or look good!).  There were no leaking issues of any kind, though apparently I was using the doubler and not the soaker.  I am unsure if I misplaced the soaker it came with or what!  I just noticed this today!  The doubler is 100% cotton and bi-folds, and the soaker is 100% cotton and trifolds.  Apparently the doubler is all I need so I bet the soaker is even better!

Fit ✰✰✰✰ The first time I used the diaper I felt there was an issue with fit around my son’s waist, as if the snaps were too far apaprt for me to get a tight enough fit.  The second time I used it there was no issue at all.  I never had a problem with that afterwards.  Most diapers have a learning curve to get a good fit and application on the baby, and even an experienced diaper tester can have trouble.  With snaps there is always that chance of having an odd fit when you are in between snaps.  These are a tinier bit farther apaprt than most so that may have been my issue. I have been reaching for this diaper a lot though, because it is really trim!  It gives my son a little less of a fluffy booty!  As for the rise adjustments, I can tell it gets very small, but with no newborn to test it on (yet!) I can’t speak to the fit.

Overall- I am very impressed with this diaper.  I had never heard of it before, but I hope after my review that you give it some consideration.  It is very well made (the label tag started fraying but the label was not made by the same folks making the diaper… so don’t fault it for that!) and you really can’t beat the price on these!

Baby Signing Success, Finally!

While I was pregnant with my first son I decided I wanted to work on baby signs with him.  I didn’t buy any materials; I just looked up the signs I wanted to use online.

Starting at 3 months I began signing “milk,” and when he began eating solids we started working on “eat,” “more,” “all done,” and “drink.”

I have pretty consistent signed these few words to him almost his entire life.  But I didn’t see any signs!  While I knew other babies typically can pick up signs by around 9 months, Fletcher wasn’t having it.  Then he turned a year, and still no signing.  I was discouraged but I kept up the few signs we did.  I would have added more but since he hadn’t picked the ones I was showing him up I held off.

2-3 months ago he did start signing “all done” which of all of the signs, wasn’t the most helpful!  I was still excited to see him pick it up though.  Instead of flipping his hands front to back, he just holds them up.

Then this month, he started signing “more” back to me.  It was a very exciting day!  For “more” he also adapted the sign to his own use and puts a fist to an open hand, versus bringing it finger tips together.

I began really pushing the signs after that, and just a few days ago he finally signed “milk.”  It was the one sign I really wanted him to learn, since I sign “milk” for nursing.  In recent weeks he has already come up with his own sign for milk.  But it is something I hope he stops.  He smacks his lips and either points to my boobs or lifts my shirt down.  It is less than polite!  ”smack smack smack” mommy give me boobies!

The irony is that I always signed “milk” to him when we nursed.  Now, it is the most beautiful and exciting thing to see.  I love how gingerly he opens and closes his fist.  Friday night while I rocked him and nursed him before bed he gently signed milk.  It was so sweet, and I was so proud of him.

The reason I wanted to share is because I hope our story will encourage any mamas out there who think their baby isn’t picking up signing.  I did think he understood, but was worried he would never sign back.  Now that he is picking the signs up we will continue working on these and will introduce a few more.  I believe signing is great for helping non speaking babies to communicate.  I am just so glad we stuck with it!

Accepting the things you cannot change…

It occurred to me today that I have accepted something about my body that mere months ago made me feel very insecure.  This thing, while totally normal, was not always there.  It was something new and foreign to my body and it came while I was pregnant.

Now, I have to see it every single day, many times a day.  What is it?  Men…. you may want to stop reading now (like there are many men who read my blog!)  I am talking about larger than average areolas!

You read in the pregnancy books that your areolas may darken in appearance, and/or get larger with pregnancy.  Mine got quite a bit larger.  And have stayed that way.  I don’t know if they will go back down when I am done nursing, but I think they are here to stay.

Why does this bother me so much?  Probably because the images of breasts shown on TV, in magazines, and in film, usually show petite little nipples, even on women with very large busts.  Realistic?  Not really.  But seeing as how I used to have average size areolas, I was ashamed.

I’ll never forget the lactation consultant who casually said that my baby should have all of my areola in his tiny newborn mouth… then went on to stumble… “well, normally.  But not you!”  Yes, thanks.

I started nursing in public with a cover, then moved to very discreetly nursing with strategicly layered clothing.  But now that my son is older I have decided I am not planning my wardrobe to accompany nursing.  We don’t have to NIP as much as before.  When it happens though, somehow we are always in a top that I have to pull out of the top.  This means the top of my breast is completely exposed, and yes, my areola is not covered completely.

I used to get around this by scrunching my top around his mouth, or squishing his face in so less was visible.  Now that he is completely in control of how he eats those are no longer options.  So, I had to be at peace with a little pink showing.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not going around town with my breasts out nursing him.  I still like to keep as much covered as possible.  If I am around many people, or strangers, I will do what I can to show less skin.  If I am around friends, I tend to be much more relaxed.  If the pink is showing, it just is.

I talked about this with a friend of mine who is in the same boat as me.  I joked with her about fitting a large areola in a newborn’s mouth, and it was nice to “come out of the closet” of large areolas.  Even nursing imagery generally shows no areola, just flesh and baby mouth.

I recently flipped through a breastfeeding manual that came with my *gasp* Medela Swing Pump.  I bought the pump before I knew about the company.  However, I was pleased to see many different women shown nursing their babies.  And most of them had visible areolas.  It made me smile, and kind of helped me accept my new breasts.

Imagine what widespread mothers nursing in public would do for other moms and their acceptance of nursing in public themselves?  Seeing moms of all shapes and sizes can do so much to normalize public breastfeeding.

Operation Fluffy Update

I know you have been dying to know if there has been an update.

And there has been, sort of.

I have not been contacted by the show directly.  I know they are aware of our efforts, that is all I can say on that.

I was clued in by a cloth diaper manufacturer after the campaign began that they have been working with producers from The Ellen Show for quite some time.  I asked that they keep in touch with me on the matter.  I was very recently updated with the following information:

This brand is all but confirmed to be included on the Mother’s Day edition of The Ellen Show!

The great news is that cloth diapers, at least one brand that I am aware of, will be on the show.  Frankly, I would like to see more variety, and that could still be a possibility, but one is good enough for me.  And, in case you are wondering, I cannot tell you the brand.  When they are ready to announce I’m sure I will be able to divulge.  For now just know they were not directly involved with #operationfluffy.

There is no way of knowing if #operationfluffy had anything to do with their decision.  I would certainly like to think so considering that our campaign was very well timed in coordination with this brand’s talks with the show.  We sent thousands of tweets, and that can’t go unnoticed by her staff.

I am still lobbying for a larger spotlight.  You can continue to join me if you want, or be completely content knowing there will be a brand of cloth diapers on the show.

I am more than proud of the work everyone put into the campaign.  The YouTube video is already close to 1,500 views.  It will continue to spread the message of cloth diapers!

I am sincerely grateful for the passion you have all shown for #operationfluffy.  Even as this is coming to a close, it is important to remember that we can always be doing something to promote cloth diapers, be it online or in our local community!
