Monkey Doodlez Bamboo AIO Video Review

MDlogoBamboo fiber fabrics are luxuriously soft and feel kind of like silk. Bamboo is quickly renewable and shares many of the wonderful properties of cotton; superior absorbency, breathability and does not trap heat.

The microfleece in these diapers is made from a blend of (Rayon made from) Bamboo (33%) and polyester (67%) which offers silky softness matched with durability. This microfleece will not pill so your baby’s bottom will be cradled in silky softness change after change.

Hidden inside is a full layer of heavy weight cotton flannel for an added all over absorbency and breathability. Securely attached is a multi layer thick and thirsty cotton terry soaker pad.

The diaper fastens with our own Doodlez tape (hook and loop) to provide a secure hold while remaining very soft to the touch.

Gentle elastics at the legs and waist provide a comfortable fit.
DSC_0358Ease of Use ✰✰✰✰✰ This is a diaper you can trust with your babysitter or Daddy! It goes on super simply, just like a disposable. The video shows how easy it really is. You will have to affix the laundry tabs with a simple fold back, rather than looking for laundry tabs.
Bang for the Buck ✰✰✰ The Bamboo Doodlez retails for around 20.00. This is a little more than I would want to spend for a sized, All in One diaper. You are paying for the super smooth and soft bamboo lining that your baby feels. Yes, it is so soft! There is plenty of absorbency too.
Performance ✰✰✰✰✰ I have had a great experience testing this diaper. It has performed well in all capacities, day time, naps, and over night. I want you to know that my son is not a heavy wetter. Even though it worked for us overnight but might not work for everyone. For comparison, he can use a BG One Size insert and a microfiber doubler overnights and they aren’t soaked in the morning.
Fit ✰✰✰✰ The first thing I noticed is that this has a lower rise that many other medium diapers. It still fits my son, but it might not fit him in the rise as long as some other. The legs were a great fit on him, snug enough to hold everything in but not too tight. I’d say his thighs are average for a 12 month old. There is lots of room left on the waist for growth as well.
Overall- I think it is great to have an all in one diaper around for going out or for people not familiar with cloth diapers. I love how the lining is colored and is made from a bamboo blend which is incredibly soft. I would like it to have a pocket to add absorbency. It also takes 2-3 cycles in the dryer or many, many hours of line drying. This is the case with any sewn down all-in-one. You pay in drying time for convenience.

If you want to try one, you can find them at many retailers in the US and Canada.  Monkey Doodlez are made in Canada.

I was not paid to host this giveaway.  I received a Bamboo AIO to review which was free of charge.

Fluffy Christmas Deadline

I wanted to update everyone that the deadline to apply for Fluffy Christmas is November 30.  Once all of the applications are submitted the selection process will begin and the chosen families will have their baskets by Christmas if all goes well.  If you are sending diapers for the basket please have them shipped by December 1.

I am also trying to work out a way to help the families who aren’t selected.  As much as I wish I could send a basket to everyone who has applied this just isn’t possible.  Thanks to the generosity of the many companies involved I am already exceeding my goal of just one basket.  I am thrilled at that!  I can’t wait to share with everyone all of the companies who have made this possible.

If you haven’t already and you are truly in need of cloth diapers, please fill out this application.  If you know someone in need, pass it on.   Applying won’t take long and the information given won’t be shared with anyone.

How to clean your Bum Genius Velcro Tabs

… or any velcro tabs for that matter!  Most cloth diaper users encounter problems with their velcro tabs.  They can lose stickiness, curl, and gather lots of fluff over the months and years of washing.  When I first started using and washing my Bum Genius 3.0′s I carefully pulled any stray hairs out that I saw.  That was when my baby slept the majority of the day.  Now I hardly have time to stuff and put away my diapers.  Sometimes they lay in a pile and I pick the pieces up for each change.

I first heard about using a snappi to clean velcro tabs a few months ago.  I wish I could remember who I heard it from to give them proper credit.  It was probably on the Monday Night Twitter #clothdiapers chat.  Using a snappi is easy to clean the gunk out of the tabs.  If you don’t own one you can also use a comb.  I do caution you to pay attention as you do this.  You could break the hoops in the velcro.

Bum Genius 3.0 Review

Boy was this a long time coming or what?  I have used the Bum Genius 3.0 One Size Pocket since my son was a newborn.  I bought these initially because they had the best reviews on Diaperpin.com.  I also saw them in a store and thought they looked easy enough for my husband to figure out.  It is rare that I review a diaper I have used since the newborn stage.  Hopefully this review will give those looking for advice on these diapers some useful insight into the BG 3.0.  These are perfect starter diapers.  The beauty of them really is in the simplicity.

bumGenius-one-size-3.0-diagramEase of Use ✰✰✰✰✰ The BG 3.0 uses a velcro closure.  Bum Genius has plainly stated that they will never make a snap version of this diaper.  It is intended to be the easiest and most user friendly cloth diaper on the market.  You can have the BG converted to snaps if you want, of you can buy a BG Organic with snaps or the new Flip.  Before putting it on the baby you will need to stuff it with the microfiber insert.  The pocket opening does require that you lift the flap, then insert the soaker, then fold the flap back over.  I am always extremely careful when I stuff my diapers because if you don’t lay things down correctly you can get leaks.  When you are done you need to either remove the inerst all the way or pull it out slightly to let the washer do the rest of the work.

Bang for the Buck ✰✰✰✰ In my mind when I do these reviews I always compare pocket diapers (and others) to the BG 3.0.  The pricing is 17.95 and you get the shell, a one size microfiber insert, and a newborn insert/doubler.  I have found plenty of other diapers that cost less than the 3.0, however they are usually not made with the same quality of materials.  The BG also has widespread availability.  If a pocket diaper costs more than this I look for materials like hemp, bamboo, and more options.  It seems expensive but it is still on the lower end of diaper costs.

Performance ✰✰✰✰ As of now I have zero leak issues with my Bum Genius 3.0.  However, it hasn’t always been like that.  I started using the diaper on my son when he hit 8 pounds.  Leaks out of the back!  As a new mom I thought my baby was sweating from being swaddled and I asked my pediatrician.  She asked if I had his penis pointed down.  Whoops.  So we started pointing it down and still got leaks but not as many.  Usually these leaks were up the back or through the leg openings.  It really wasn’t tight enough on his legs.  Online the majority of users said the BG fit their babies between 11-13 pounds.  This was true for us as well.  I stopped using them until that point and stuck with prefolds and some disposables, mostly at night.  I used the newborn insert only for quite a while, then moved to the one size insert for more absorbency.  We use them at nights on occasions now too and I don’t have leaks.  I haven’t had any leaks at all for quite some time.  I attribute this to getting a better wash routine.  I was using Tide but now only use cloth diaper specific detergents.

Fit ✰✰✰✰ I am not saying this diaper will not fit an 8 pound baby, because every single baby is shaped differently.  I do know that as a member of online communities for cloth diapering that most moms say they don’t.  Personal experience tells me that it didn’t work for my baby until 11-13 pounds.  Once it fit him we still had some user error leaks cause by how we put it on or how we washed it.  (When I say “we” I really me “I”)  The velcro tabs overlap and the 3 step rise worked well for his younger days and now.  He is 21 pounds and on the middle rise snap.  We are on the verge of needing to move up.  Babies change shapes so he may move back down too.

Overall- The majority of my stash is still made up of my original set of Bum Genius 3.0′s.  Many of them have been converted to snaps.  Those that haven’t have had issues with the velcro tabs getting full of lint and the laundry tabs have lost all stickiness.  I will not go to the trouble of replacing them but you can have that done or do it yourself.  The tabs also curl up.  There are some fuzzies on the outside around the tabs where jeans rub.  Yet, they still function well and I grab them because they are easy to use.  My husband grabs for these the most because he is most comfortable with them.  I think the BG is a great starter diaper.  I have suggested them to many moms looking for something their husbands might be able to use.  Hubbies so forget to attach laundry tabs and pull inserts out.  Be warned!  i had a sheet with instructions for him.

I am currently reviewing the newest diapers from Bum Genius, the Flip and Econobum.  I have already reviewed the BG Organic AIO.  Tomorrow look for a video showing how to clean the velcro of your Bum Genius.

Happy First Birthday, Fletcher!

Today we are celebrating the birth of my son one year ago. It has gone by incredibly fast and when I realize it has been a full year since giving birth I’m not sure I believe it. On one hand it feels like ages ago since I was a milk machine 24/7 and had this tiny crying thing in my arms. On the other hand, it can’t possibly have been a year! It all went by so quickly. He knows so many things. He has an engineer’s mind like his father and wants to know how everything works. He isn’t fooled if you take the batteries out of the remote. He knows how to eject DVD’s and plug in an outlet (with outlet covers on, but he continues to try!) He examines our cell phones and learned yesterday how to cover the speaker to change it from loud to soft and did that for a few minutes. He is super serious and it takes a lot of work to get a laugh but it is worth it! He is starting to learn how to point things out in books and on people.

I’m really lucky to have such a great son. He might not sleep through the night yet but when he smiles at me at 2:30 in the morning and wants some milkies I still love him!

Happy Birthday Fletcher! Thanks for making me a mommy!

A Look Back: A Year of Babywearing

There isn’t much more to share about my babywearing experience that I didn’t already divulge during All About Babywearing Month.  I didn’t start from day one but I wish I had.  Babywearing is such an intimidating thing at first.  I wish everyone could attend a babywearing class to help them learn how to use their carrier properly.  That would have helped me a lot.  I will just share some highlights.

I have worn Fletcher in the Florida heat for 5-6 hours with a few breaks.  He did great.

I have worn Fletcher for 10-12 hours a day in Las Vegas for ABC Kids Expo.

I have worn Fletcher in virtually every type of carrier available.

I have worn Fletcher and nursed him discreetly while fighting a crowd like a salmon upstream at a state fair.
