I would sell my kidney for….

I would sell my kidney for….

This Bike.
Madsen Cycles Cargo Bikes

I remember a few weeks ago Gizmodo.com posted this on their blog. I went apeshiz. I had to have it. But the price tag is steep. 1,300. I don’t have that!!!!

So, readers of my blog, do me a solid. Click that banner! They are giving away 2 bikes. I don’t think I will make it into the top 20 of traffic referrers, but a girl can dream.

I can just see myself carting around my adorable son in this amazing Syracuse weather. I would most definitely wear an adorable sun dress and pig tails (I will make pig tails since my hair is short) to match my bike.

Do you love me? Do you want me to be happy? Then clicky clicky clicky!

Oh, and I will be posting a link in my sidebar too.  You could click that as well.  :)

Tampa FL Pictures!!!

Another trip, another photo post!  We arrived in Tampa on Tuesday evening.  Wednesday, Fletcher and I went shopping.  Later that evening we all, husband included, went to the beach.  I posted those pictures before.  Thursday we went to the aquarium with a friend.  That evening we had a delicious dinner.  Friday I took Fletcher to the zoo.  My goal was to feed a giraffe which I accomplished.  After the zoo the whole family went out to lunch, then packed up to go to the beach again.  Saturday was a biggie.  We left early in the morning for Busch Gardens.  My husband’s company was having a picnic there.  We got to do the safari thing, and even rode 2 rollercoasters!  We left straight from the park and took 2 airplanes home.  We landed at 1 am.  I am tired, hungry, and tired.  I think the plan for the day is to get groceries and relax.  I’ll be back later for more exciting posts.  Enjoy the pictures!

My son is lacking a fluffy bum :(

My son is lacking a fluffy bum :(

I, the Queen of Cloth, have my son is disposables.  For the time being.  I came to the hard decision to use disposables on our quick trip to Tampa, FL.  We leave tomorrow morning but I am not willing to leave my diapers dirty in the pail so I recently changed him from his last cloth diaper to his first disposable for a few days.

We decided to buy Huggies Pure and Natural.  They are made with organic cotton and lack many of the chemicals found in traditional disposables.  I have heard  good things about their performance, smell (they aren’t supposed to smell like a sposie), and feel.  I was hoping to find the disposables that are made from corn and break down but I couldn’t.

Why aren’t I using G Diapers?  Well, I was hoping to use them but I ruled them out because I only have 3 covers.  There is a laundry facility but I would be having to wash my covers quite a few times while in Tampa.

Many of you may find my decision shocking, or you might think I am lazy.  I am feeling pretty bad about my decision too.  But, if you saw us on our last trip you may understand why I want to simplify my life for 4 days.

A Well Meaning Husband

A Well Meaning Husband

Yesterday morning it was my turn to sleep in.  Hallelujah!  This meant my husband got to do the first diaper change of the day.  Well, I had very few diapers to choose from that were clean.  There was a load of clean, dry diapers in the dryer… which is in the basement.  I believe the choices available for my husband were fitteds, g diapers, gro baby, and a straggling pocket.  He chose a Piddle Poddles fitted.

A bit after this change my husband brings my son in to my bed for me to nurse him.  This is how this conversation went.

“He is wearing a fitted.  He needs a cover.  This isn’t waterproof.”

“Oh, ok.  He is hungry.”

“I will feed him when he has a cover on, I don’t want pee to leak through in my bed or on me.”

Shortly after: Husband enters.

“Here.”

“This isn’t a waterproof cover.”

“What do you mean, it is a cover.  There are now two layers of fabric.”

“Yes, but this is a G Diaper cover, not a waterproof cover.  Go get a Gro baby and just use that as a cover.”

He was able to find a gro baby and put it on our son.  I don’t actually own “covers”.  I use fitteds coverless around the house for when I want my son’s junk to be able to breathe.

I am lucky enough to have a husband who supports my cloth diapering addiction, in practice and in the financial department as well.  Sometimes, we have “misunderstandings” such as these, where I suggest a specific diaper be used, and he has no clue what I am talking about.  Or, I don’t request a particular diaper and he picks one that won’t work for the situation at hand.  At least he knows which diapers are “nighttime” diapers (the thick ones heh) and which ones to use during the day (most of the time.)  I have heard stories from other moms whose husbands refuse to change a cloth diaper, so I consider myself pretty lucky.  Thanks hubby!

P.S.

I was able to sleep in to 10:30.  I was a happy mama!

Diapering Survey.

If you have a spare moment, would you participate in this survey?  It is meant to find out what types of diapers parents are using and why.  It isn’t just for cloth mamas, it asks questions about disposables as well.  It took me 2 minutes.

Diaper Survey

Thanks in advance for taking a moment to help this mama and her study out. I hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. I already have the sunburn to prove how much fun I have been having!

Happy 6 Months, Fletcher

Happy 6 Months, Fletcher

Our first 4d glimpse of our son

38 1/2 weeks, my tummy baby

Six months ago my son was born.  7 lbs, 3 oz, 19.5 inches long, and cute as a button.  I didn’t get my dream birth experience since I was high risk, but I did deliver my dream son.  I remember when I was pregnant, passerbys, friends, and family alike used to tell me “Appreciate every day because it passes so quickly.”  That it does.  Thankfully, we did as we were told and took a million and one pictures.

It took 20 hours after they started pitocin to labor and deliver my son.  I pushed for 3 hours.  Once his shoulders were out, I pulled him the rest of the way out and put him on my chest.  We allowed his cord to stay on until it stopped pulsating.  I was given a good amount of time to bond with him before he was taken to be cleaned and examined.  I wasn’t allowed to nurse until the NICU doctors examined him due to the “grunting” way he was breathing.  This was devastating to me.  I had envisioned delivering my son and putting him to the breast right away.

Fletcher, a few minutes old

Once we were in the recovery room we tried nursing for the first time.  Apparently, nursing is not a natural instinct for mother or baby.  My son was a terrible latcher.  He has a recessed chin so his bottom gums rubbed my nipple raw.  To help regulate his blood sugar my colostrum was manually expressed (I was milked) by the lactation consultant.  He took this tiny amount of precious fluid and it did wonders.  We kept this up, and I also used the hospital pump to get colostrum for him.

The first picture taken of mother and son.

My entire stay in the hospital was dedicated to learning how to nurse.  I slept less than 10 hours in the three days I was there.  It was a blur of nurses and lactation consultants coming in to attach my son to my breast, pumping, and doctor examinations.  I didn’t get to enjoy my son.  In some ways I was miserable.  Nursing seemed hopeless.  I felt defeated.  I was exhausted, sore from giving birth, and blistered from nursing.  Every time the nurse would come in to help me nurse, I cringed.

Finally, after little success, the lactation consultant suggested that I use a nipple shield.  Hallelujah.  He latched on!  In a few sessions we were nursing.  I left the hospital mildly confident about nursing, and armed with a pump “just in case.”

In 5 weeks we were completely weaned from the shield after 2 visits with a lactation consultant.  In 3 months, I felt 99% confident with nursing.  By 5 months I was a pro.

Exactly 5 months old.

Although I wouldn’t call it a goal, my expectation was to nurse until his teeth made an appearance.  Since then, I have changed my goal.  I want to make it to a year.  And from then, I will let Fletcher decide.   I am extremely proud of myself for reaching 6 months.  If you had told me in the hospital that I would make it to 6 months I wouldn’t have believed you.  Breastfeeding has taken more work than I expected, but it has brought me more joy than I thought possible.  Some of my favorite memories of the past 6 months have involved nursing my son.  He makes contented gulps and sighs, he clutches at my bra strap or top, he opens and closes his fists, he looks up at me with such love and trust, he drifts off in my arms, he is just amazing.

Now, he is no longer my little baby.  He is over 15 pounds and 26.5 inches long.  He has been eating solids since Mother’s Day.

His first taste of solid food.

His first two teeth have cut, one 2 days ago, and one yesterday.  Thankfully, they are his bottom teeth so I have bought some more time before teeth become an issue.  He has such a personality; I consider him a watcher of the world.  He is a very serious child, he likes to take in his surroundings and study them  If he can take them in his hand and examine them with his mouth, he will.  I am constantly amazed by him, and how much I love him.

Happy 1/2 Birthday, Fletcher!

Ergo, how I love thee….

Let me count the ways…

dsc_31493

You make my life so simple in so many ways.  You are always in my car when I need you.  You have a handy pocket for my wallet and keys that I use daily.  You let my son chew on your straps while we shop.  You have the most awesome rain/ wind/ sun hood that has saved me more than once from having a wind blown, wet baby.  You are so easy to adjust.  You are even easier to put on in the car, then put my son into.  I can use you to wear my son while shopping and still be hands free.  Today you showed me I can still use you while peeing at Target while no one is the wiser (except anyone in the bathroom who heard my son “talking”)  You never make my back or shoulders hurt.  You were found used on craigslist and saved me money by not buying you new.  You hide my muffin top when I wear you on the front.  You are just so freaking awesome and I love you!
